You could smell the bergamot and chamomile burning as New Leaf Tomes and Tea went up in flames.
“No, no, no, no!” Kianthe sobbed. It wasn’t that her dreams were going up in smoke; it was that Reyna was still in there.
The rioters had tossed torches into every building they passed as they marched towards more focused goals. There were wards against casual flames, but the torches had counters engraved in them, and books made too good a source of fuel.
The inferno raged as Kianthe broke the seals that kept her safe and unnoticed. (Marked) Now showed Reyna's exact location in her (mental map) rather than a feeling of general direction.
Kianthe dived into the inferno, activating [Armor Adaptation], her billowy dress shirt and leather pants turned rigid as the material twisted and changed into a suit of armor. It would ruin the clothes, but the protection this provided would make it resistant to all kinds of magic and elements, making it perfect for surviving the flames.
The armor didn't protect her hair as she had to wave away flames that singed it. [Mental Map] And [Marked] had Reyna upstairs. Easy place to get trapped in when fire quickly took over the stacks of books on the ground floor. Love was being silly in how she'd rather die than break her seals and put them both at risk. So what if they had to move again, at least they'd both be together.
The wickedly enhanced flames had eaten through the bottom steps. The upper stairs were still damp and steaming. [Tidal Wave] had been sealed down to the level of [Wet] for this city, but it had been enough to delay the rising fire. “Clever girl.”
[Leap] took care of the problem of the missing steps to reach the top of the stairs. The inhale it took to use the skill, however, led to a coughing fit as Kianthe took in too much smoke into her lungs.
To the right. [Marked] wasn't even needed as she followed the damp rug towards the upstairs bathroom.
Busting in, Kianthe discovered Reyna, fully clothed, sitting in the bathtub. “What are you doing?” the armored woman demanded.
“I'm protecting myself from the fire until the fire brigade comes. You're the one overreacting. You've broken your seals, and I don't know anyone in this town who can reapply them.”
So she didn't need to be rescued because someone else would do the rescuing? Kianthe pictured muscly-armed fire brigade girls hauling her wife to safety and grumbled before taking a breath.
“It’s a riot caused by those Naewauld pricks. Half the street is on fire. No one will be here to do any rescuing soon.”
“So we weren't targeted because we're…’
“No one cares about that in this city. The floor will collapse before...”
“[Lighten Load] should give me plenty of time.” Reyna interrupted.
That may make her bathtub full of water light enough not to disturb any fire-degrading floorboards. Kianthe had the opposite issue with [Armor Adaptation]. It not only transformed clothes, but also added mass and physical weight greater than a full set of plate mail. The floor underneath the royal bodyguard collapsed, sending her tumbling down into the books-turned-bonfire below.
“Broken dragon's eggs!” Reyna cursed, breaking her seals in the process. Kianthe had a thick enough head that the fall would be fine, but that much heat would easily be deadly. The [Tidal Wave] that followed drenched the whole store, dousing the flames and turning whatever had been left standing into a pile of rubble.
[Mage Hands] pulled Kianthe out of the mess, looking like a damp kitten. More embarrassed than hurt.
“Well, we can't stay here now.” The mage chastised her wife.
Kianthe met her in a hug, not wanting to think about what they've lost.
“There is a ship in the rocks planning a run of Old Bones’s coal to the isles. The Honeyed something... I always keep an eye out for places taking passengers for quick escapes.” In the distance, smoke billowed and fires flashed. Hints of magic spread through the air as those resisting the rioters met the conflict. “How about we head there and put fires out along the way?”
