Owlsley buried her face into Socks' fur. “You’re real. You’re real. You’re real.” She murmured softly into his chest. The mantra was needed.

The other members of Alpat’s team in the Ascendant Games were left in the capital as Brix had their oversized carriage head to the transportation station. Owlsley held onto her primal bond with her pet as tightly as she gripped its body. She’d hoped to catch Harmony to test him before she left, but the riots had ruined that plan. Assurances that the guild and teleportation stations could detect that were only slightly comforting. Brix wasn’t exactly happy about missing that connection. The prismatic enforcer pulled her head out of her pet to listen to him.

“It’s disappointing that White girl got into The Academy; there were no spots to be had. Lowood University competes with them at the end of every quarter. The Academy forces its chosen nine to compete every year against other schools' qualifiers, and Lowood is there for that tournament; all you have to do is make the team and form a continued relationship with White. If that girl isn’t a primus, then their formula is off.”

“Harmony is a good person for a necro…”   Brix’s glare, which included a punch of social influence, had her changing her words, “revivalist, but I don’t see why this is so important to you.”

“I know I’ve been light in my praise of you, Ms. Wurrick, but you are strong, kind, and reliable enough to get the attention of that lady. She may be from a small kingdom, but one that has drawn the attention of The Maekus. Alpat is, but one kingdom separated from Naewuald, and if the turmoil I expect to come happens, you’ll be perfectly placed to influence White’s hand.”

Owlsley snorted.

“One has to think in relationships that could last for centuries. I’m disappointed I was kind of a goblin’s uncle to the girl.”

He was kind of a jerk to her, too. Still acted like one with this focus on Harmony White over her comfort. Not even staying to see who will win The Ascendant Games.  Owlsley let her fingers run through Socks' fur, searching for any imperfections, any signs he might be a mimic. There was that alternative motivation to agree to this mission. Fear to eliminate fear, and the guarantee Socks is hers.

“I’ll qualify. I’ll meet her. Don’t you doubt me.” She let the impenetrable assurance of her class take over her words.

Brick laughed. “From a shy girl to this. Lowood isn’t some easy school for those who put on airs about being better. There will be actual competition. You’ll need to draw blood, more than hide in your shell.”

Owlsley dove back into the arms of her pet. This close, she could feel their connection and searched it for the hundredth time. Socks showed no doubt or worry on his side of their primal bond, only confidence.

“Harmony White, I’ll see you again.”  She whispered into him with crystalized resolve.
