Glimpses - 26
Naewauld had more weeds than flowers. Captain Ellis, for a long time, had accepted that fact with two sturdy drinks, a night with one of the flower house girls, and a cynical depression that had helped him work to get promoted to Social Investigator, to escape the grind of removing one weed, and three pop up in its place. “Jasper, how is our hunt going for The Terror that Croaks in the Night?” He asked with a growing smile, one that wasn’t even a seed in his mind months ago.
“He keeps on escaping us. I can see this case dragging on for years.”
Years were optimistic. Eventually, someone with real power wanting a favor from one of the criminal syndicates would get involved enough to stop this whole charade.
The nocturnal familiar’s disruption of multiple organizations could have ended as a summer blip. As the captain assigned to Lady White, it had been paramount to hide her involvement, and the attacks ending coinciding with her departure, and the new notoriety for the Ascendant Games would have been too much. If the familiar had used his shadow traveling, news might have spread quickly. Of course, it was their duty to continue the actions to ensure that no connection would be made.
Henry, their truthsayer, coughed. “There are some signs that he’s not as violent as he once was. Particularly when facing those harming the homeless population in the city. Statistically, we are having fewer missing persons reported since he left, and I suspect some of those were due to our perpetrator previously.”
“Bloodthirsty,” Ellis murmured in a way that finally broke his smile. The croaks, the scent, and the shadow magic had all been simulated with some difficulty for attacks, mostly to keep up the fear. They’d worried about the weaker prey because Hyacinth had taken down challenging opponents, but with the criminals keeping their street teams thin, that was who was available. Murder however…
“I know some girls with lists of those who have particularly violent tendencies. There was a lot of crossover previously. It might be wise to look at those, for their protection.”
“Stackly has taken at least two girls' hands, and the charges end up dropped. Maybe check on him first?” Jasper asked calmly.
The subordinates had done most of the dirty work; they’d leap across this line. Captain Ellis contemplated ending this performance now. Then he could go back to more rigorously keeping tabs on visiting dignitaries. Not that they weren’t all in Hazeldown for the duration of the Games. Back to babysitting the pampered, and ignoring the rot that grew the weeds.
“Yes, yes, make a list. I’m sure this lull is only for the Terror to lure his prey out before he strikes. While some news rags are calling this new influence a hero, we can’t abandon our duty to stop vigilantism when its warty head rises.” Ellis answered, sending them both scurrying off to do the legwork.
