"Our investigation revealed that Jane Lang’s family owns a small pharmaceutical laboratory that has experienced a suspicious, explosive expansion in recent months.
This surge was funded directly by massive financial transfers from Alpha Magnus Rainn—transfers he authorized while under the influence of these mind-altering substances. Furthermore, tests show the pharmaceuticals produced by the Lang lab are substandard and utterly unregulated. And worst of all—" he paused, letting the heavy silence linger "—Jane Lang actively distributed these dangerous, unvetted drugs among the rogue pack members and vulnerable low-income individuals in the slums. Several of them suffered severe organ damage, and three have died."
Outraged gasps rippled through the gallery, swelling into a loud murmur.
I could not believe what I was hearing. None of that made any sense to me, yet somehow, as if all of them were hypnotized, the people around me believed every single syllable he uttered.
"Moreover, addressing the defense attorney’s question regarding the tattoo timeline..." The prosecutor turned toward Nico. "Alpha Magnus touched up his marks upon the direct recommendation of Dean Nyland. The Lang family has submitted official sworn statements revealing that their daughter blackmailed them into making contact with the Nyland elders for financial gain.
She went so far as to forge signatures, passing falsified documents to Dean Nyland—the secondary heir of the Nyland family. Sensing the truth was about to come to light, Dean fled the country on an emergency flight yesterday.
As potential heir to two influential bloodlines, Dean sought to consolidate power by exploiting his sister’s disappearance—likely in full collusion with the Lang family! But now that Karina Nyland has returned alive, Dean’s plot has unraveled. He and Jane Lang were co-conspirators in this treasonous syndicate."
The judge’s lips pressed into a thin, white line. Her eyes swept over me with cold disgust at the implication that I had manipulated another Alpha heir for power. Her demeanor hardened into sheer, unyielding stone.
Another gavel strike. I knew I was done.
"Court is adjourned!" the judge declared, her voice ringing out like steel. "No further preliminary hearings will be held. The court will recess to review all submitted evidence and forensic reports. Formal summonses for the trial date will be issued to all parties.
Defendant Jane Lang is granted time to secure proof of her innocence or submit a full confession, which will be weighed during sentencing. All case files will be remanded to her court-appointed defense counsel, as her family has failed to appear."
The crowd erupted into a chaos of rustling papers, rising bodies, and hushed chatter.
Magnus turned and walked toward the exit, his posture rigid, never once looking back.
Overwhelmed by raw desperation, I rushed to the edge of the glass partition separating my holding cell from the courtroom, slamming my palms against the cold barrier.
"Magnus!" My voice shattered into a raw scream. "You don’t believe this madness, do you?! Look at me! Please!"
His footsteps faltered. Slowly, he turned around.
"Magnus... you told me I was yours..." The words tore through my throat, choked by heavy, burning tears. "We were together... you felt the bond... you felt us..."
The crowd moved around him, but his family stopped in their tracks, sensing his stillness and not daring to rush him. For an agonizing second, the chaotic room melted away, leaving just the two of us locked in the silence of the emptying courtroom, guarded only by the silent sentries at the door.
"You’re nothing but a scheming little bitch," he growled, his voice so utterly devoid of warmth, so dead, that a violent shiver racked my body.
"A clever one, I’ll give you that. Talented, even. The drugs you pumped into my system nearly killed me. That tranquilizer dart your family used caused a massive overdose—my heart stopped twice in an hour! You almost ended my life with your poison. It took two days of continuous blood transfusions just to flush that toxic chemical out of my veins."
His arm whipped forward with terrifying velocity, crashing directly into the reinforced glass barrier. The heavy pane shattered into a million glittering fragments with a deafening roar.
I squeezed my eyes shut, but before I could retreat, his fist tangled into the hair at the back of my neck. He yanked hard—so viciously that a gasp of pain tore from my throat—dragging my face inches from his own.
"You ripped my soul apart," he snarled through clenched teeth, his dark eyes ablaze with murderous fury. "I trusted you. For the first time in my life, I gave a woman my absolute, unconditional trust. I tore myself inside out for you. I wanted you—only you. And all you wanted was my pack money, my status, my influence... while playing the helpless, innocent victim the entire time. You’re a natural actress, you know that? You shouldn’t be at an academy—you should be in Hollywood. You’d win an Oscar."
He released his grip, roughly shoving my head back.
"You will regret this," he whispered, his lips curling into a cruel, hollow smile that was far more terrifying than any roar of anger.
"You are going to prison very soon. And once you’re locked away, I’ll be watching. Believe me—" he leaned in, his pupils dilating as his cruel wolf bled into his eyes, turning them pitch-black "—I will ensure you suffer for what you’ve done. Every single second of your miserable life."
He turned on his heel and walked away, never looking back.
I slid down to the cold floor of the dock, resting my back against the metal framework. I didn’t cry. There were no tears left to shed. There was nothing left inside me at all—only an endless, consuming emptiness.
He hadn’t believed me. But what cut deeper than any blade, what truly threatened to shatter my heart into pieces, was knowing his life had hung by a thread—that he had almost died.
And even though I was completely innocent, in his eyes, I was the monster who had tried to kill him.
