We veered off the main highway onto a narrow, unpaved trail. Darkness closed in rapidly as the dense treeline swallowed the remaining scraps of daylight. It felt as though we were driving into an abyss from which there was no return.
At last, a high wrought-iron fence emerged through the trees, its massive gates swinging open silently at our approach. Beyond them, perched on a crest like a fortress straight out of a dark legend, stood his estate. A grand two-story manor constructed of dark slate and pale wood, its sprawling panoramic windows reflecting the dying, blood-soaked embers of the sunset.
"We’re here," Magnus gritted out, his voice a low, gravelly rumble as he killed the engine.
The moment we stepped outside, the crisp evening air slapped against my flushed cheeks. I drank it in, desperately trying to quiet the wild drumming of my heart, but the cool breeze offered no relief. The mounting fever consumed me completely. My pulse thundered in my temples, constricted my throat, and pooled as a sudden, scorching heat between my tight thighs.
Magnus rounded the hood, his large hand clamping around mine with a desperate, bruising grip.
He dragged me toward the grand entrance with long, hurried strides, forcing me to practically run to keep pace. The heavy oak door swung open without a sound, swallowing us into the shadows of the estate.
Inside, the estate was even more breathtaking. High ceilings spanned by dark timber beams, floor-to-ceiling windows flooding the main hall with a thick, blood-red sunset glow. The space was completely open—a vast living area with a massive stone fireplace flowing seamlessly into a kitchen of polished black marble, featuring almost no interior walls. Expensive furniture in sleek, dark tones anchored the room. Everything breathed immense wealth and absolute power.
Yet I barely registered any of it. My entire focus was locked onto Magnus as he released my wrist and stepped away, turning his back to me. His shoulders were strained to the point of trembling; his large hands clenched into tight fists and slowly unclasped, as if he were fighting with every ounce of his soul to contain a tempest within.
For several agonizing seconds he remained still, his broad back heaving with deep, jagged breaths. Then, he turned around to face me.
I barely suppressed a terrified gasp.
His eyes.
God, his eyes.
His pupils had blown out so completely that the cold, icy grey of his irises was swallowed whole, leaving only a razor-thin ring of molten silver gleaming at the edges like a blade. In that impenetrable darkness swam something feral, ancient, and utterly merciless—a hungry, predatory force that should have scared me out of my mind.
Yet, instead of paralyzing fear, a treacherous, searing heat pooled deep in my lower belly. It bled through my veins, throbbing rhythmically between my tight thighs.
"Jane," he rasped out—a low, resonant growl that sent goosebumps racing down my spine. He took a single, deliberate step toward me, then another, moving with the fluid lethality of a stalker closing in on its prey. "Come here. Right now."
My heart hammered wildly against my ribs, demanding an escape. I swallowed hard against my parched throat, forcing my trembling legs to bridge the gap between us. With every step, his scent grew dangerously concentrated, overwhelming my senses. It didn’t smell like a single flower or wood; it was the sharp, ozone-heavy tang of ionized air right after a violent thunderstorm—pure, unbridled power.
When less than a yard remained between us, his arm shot out and seized my wrist, yanking me forward with sudden force. I collided against his rock-hard chest with a muffled gasp.
"Listen to me very carefully, breeder," he growled down at me, his gaze crushing in its weight. His free hand slid to the nape of my neck, his fingers tangling deep into my hair—not painfully, but with enough iron pressure to make it clear I couldn’t turn away.
"My rut is starting. Right now. In an hour, maybe two, I will lose complete control. Entirely. Do you understand? There will be nothing left of the man you know—only raw instinct. Only the absolute need to take you, fill you, and claim you."
His thumb pressed heavily against my lower lip, forcing my mouth to part.
"And when that happens, I won’t be gentle. I won’t be careful. I will take what is mine. I will fuck you again, and again, and again until the fever breaks. And that can last for days, Jane. Days without stopping. You will plead with me to stop, but I won’t be able to. Even if I wanted to... I won’t have the capacity to yield. Do you understand me?"
A violent shudder rippled through my body. Heat flushed my cheeks crimson as my breath turned shallow and ragged. My pulse thundered so loudly I was certain he could hear every desperate beat against my ribs. Between my thighs, a hot, liquid slickness began to bloom.
"I..." my voice cracked, betraying my composure. "I understand."
"No," he cut in harshly, his grip on my hair tightening just enough to tilt my head back, completely exposing the delicate column of my throat to his sight. "You don’t. But you will very soon. So right now, while I still possess a shred of humanity, I am going to prepare you. I am going to take your innocence as gently as I can."
He leaned closer until his lips nearly brushed mine.
"But for that I need your consent, Jane. Clear. Spoken. Out loud. Tell me right now—are you ready to become mine? Ready to give yourself to me completely? Because once I start, there is no going back."
I stared into eyes that had gone almost pure black and saw the desperate war raging behind them. He was holding the wolf on a fraying leash by sheer force of will, balanced on the edge of the abyss. This was my choice. My last chance to say no.
But I didn’t want to say no.
"Yes," I breathed, steady and sure. "I agree, Magnus."
