Kael woke before the mountain properly did.

The storm still pressed softly against Hearthfang’s outer stone, deep enough now that most corridor sounds had disappeared beneath the snowpack. Only the lower vent currents remained audible through the walls, slow heat moving beneath the floors in steady pulses as the residence redirected warmth through the inner chambers.

Nia slept against his chest beneath the blankets.

One of her ears twitched in her sleep.

Kael watched the small movement with quiet fascination, his hand already moving into her hair before he consciously decided to touch her. The rabbit ears fit her completely. Looking at her now eased something in him he had not fully understood before yesterday, some absence his instincts had circled since the first day he found her alone in the jungle with no scent markers and no clan familiarity.

Now that lingering sense of unfamiliarity had finally eased.

The mating mark rested dark against her shoulder where the blankets had slipped lower during the night, visible against brown skin warmed gold by hearthlight and vent heat. His gaze kept returning there. The possessiveness no longer felt like something he needed to restrain away from her, not after she said yes, not after she cried against him while telling him about another world and still leaned back into his arms like she belonged there anyway.

The ear beneath his fingers flicked again.

Nia made a soft protesting sound in her sleep and pushed her face more firmly against his chest.

Kael brushed his thumb slowly along the base of the ear. Every reaction moved through her now without concealment, ears twitching when she liked something, folding back when embarrassed, going still whenever he surprised her.

He remembered the first moment he saw them yesterday morning. Shock had come first, but it had not stayed. Understanding followed, his body recognizing the rightness of it before his thoughts fully caught up.

The dark curls spread around her ears made the pale brown fur stand out more strongly beneath the blankets, soft and warm-looking and delicate compared to the heavier mountain species around Hearthfang.

He lowered his head and pressed a slow kiss against one ear.

Nia jerked awake, the ear snapping upright beneath his mouth while heat flooded her scent so quickly it pulled warmth through his own chest in answer.

A startled sound escaped her before she shoved her face against his chest beneath the blankets.

Kael’s mouth shifted slightly against the top of her head while his hand moved slowly down her back.

The movement pulled her closer. She came without resistance now whenever he touched her like this, her body settling instinctively against his warmth before she consciously decided anything. The certainty of that trust still affected him more than he knew what to do with.

Nia shifted slightly against him and winced.

His hand steadied immediately at her waist.

“You hurting?”

“A little.”

Her ears folded back halfway while she answered.

Kael’s hand settled more firmly at her waist when she shifted again.

His thumb moved once against her side, careful around the lingering soreness.

Nia stayed still afterward, her face still tucked against his chest while the warmth beneath the blankets gathered slowly around them both.

“You keep looking at them,” she muttered eventually.

“Hm.”

His mouth brushed briefly through her curls.

“They’re cute.”

The ear nearest him twitched immediately.

Nia groaned softly into his chest.

The bond still lingered visibly beneath her skin in the dimness of the rear chamber, faint now compared to yesterday but still there if he looked carefully, a soft warmth beneath her scent and body heat that his instincts tracked without effort. He had not realized how tense he had been for weeks until the bond finally settled between them, his body apparently having decided long ago that Nia belonged with him and simply waiting for the rest of reality to catch up.

Now she slept in his bed beneath Hearthfang blankets with rabbit ears twitching every time he touched them, and the feeling sitting in his chest was not excitement or triumph. It was calmer than that and far deeper, the kind of satisfaction that came from finishing a winter shelter before the storms arrived, from hearing the mountain vents stabilize after a dangerous freeze.

She felt as though she had always belonged there, tucked beneath Hearthfang blankets in his rooms with the storm outside and her warmth gathered against his chest.

Nia yawned softly against his chest, and one ear folded sideways afterward.

Kael kissed it immediately.

She made another muffled protesting sound.

“You’re impossible.”

“You like me anyway.”

The ear nearest him twitched while she chose not to answer.

Kael closed his eyes and held her closer beneath the blankets while the storm moved softly through the mountain outside and morning warmth gathered slowly through the stone around them both.

Nia stayed beneath the blankets longer than she intended.

Partly because moving still made warmth pull low through her body in distracting waves whenever she shifted wrong, and mostly because Kael kept touching her ears. Every time she thought he had finally stopped, his fingers would slide slowly through her curls before one thumb brushed the base of an ear with unbearable calmness.

She still had not gotten used to how sensitive they were.

Or how quickly her body reacted now.

Her ears twitched, heat climbed into her face, and her stomach tightened every time his mouth brushed near them.

“You’re staring again,” she muttered into the blankets.

“I am.”

There wasn't even a hint of embarrassment in his expression.

Nia cracked one eye open toward him. Kael looked entirely comfortable propped against the bedding beside her, one arm still around her waist beneath the blankets while pale winter light filtered softly through the upper vent slit behind him. His curls had loosened further overnight into dark waves that made the gold in his eyes stand out more strongly in the dimness.

She pulled the blankets higher over part of her face.

One ear immediately stuck out from the top.

Kael’s attention went directly to it.

Nia caught his wrist before he could touch it.

“They need limits.”

His expression did not change.

“They suit you.”

The simple certainty in his voice caught her off guard badly enough that she stopped trying to argue.

Warmth moved through her slower this time, more settled than the earlier heat. Nobody had ever looked at her the way Kael did. Not cautiously, not conditionally, not like he was waiting for her to become inconvenient. Just certain.

She found herself curling closer before she had fully decided to.

His arm tightened around her in response.

This was apparently how mornings worked for them now. Warm stone beneath the floors, storm outside the mountain, Kael holding her beneath heavy winter blankets while touching her every few minutes like he needed continued confirmation she was still there.

Her stomach growled softly into the quiet.

Nia made a small sound and buried her face harder against his chest.

Kael’s hand moved once down her back beneath the blankets.

“Hungry?”

“Maybe.”

His mouth brushed near one ear again.

Warmth rushed through her immediately.

“Kael.”

He laughed quietly against her hair while she hid against him beneath the blankets.

The mountain remained deeply quiet around them. Storm pressure softened most corridor sounds beneath layers of snow outside, leaving only the low movement of vent heat through the stone and the occasional distant settling sound somewhere deeper in Hearthfang. The residence felt wrapped in winter stillness, warm at the center while cold pressed harmlessly against the outer mountain.

Nia listened to Kael’s heartbeat beneath her ear, slow and steady beneath the warmth of his chest while his hand continued its unhurried movement along her back.

The calm of it made it harder to hold onto the anxiety she had woken with.

“You’re very calm about all of this,” she admitted eventually.

“Hm?”

“The transformation.”

Kael’s hand paused briefly against her back before continuing its slow movement.

“You were already you yesterday.”

The answer came so simply that she looked up at him.

“I woke up to entirely different species traits attached to my head.”

“You’re still Nia.”

The warmth that moved through her chest afterward hurt a little, not painfully, but enough that she suddenly understood how close she had been living to loneliness before arriving here.

Kael noticed the shift in her expression. His thumb brushed once beneath one eye before she realized tears had started gathering there again.

“I think I cry more because of you specifically,” she said.

“Probably.”

She laughed despite herself, weakly and a little damp.

One ear twitched hard enough that his gaze dropped toward it immediately.

Nia pointed at him before he could move.

He kissed the ear anyway.

She pressed her face back into his chest with a sound caught somewhere between outrage and surrender while Kael’s laughter finally escaped properly above her, low and warm and unhurried in the storm-soft quiet of the room.
