Chapter 182: Chapter 182

"Dron!" A thunderous voice cried out as Dron began to fall in what felt like slow motion right before a hand shot out and grabbed hold of his wrist.

The momentum continued to pull him down, but another body fell forward.

Kraznek had caught him and was lying dangerously over the edge. Only the back half of his body was secured on the ground above.

"Hold on!" people started to scream, and within seconds Dron felt his body being heaved upwards.

His heart beat hard in his chest, and he couldn’t take a full breath until the people above had lifted him from the deep dark abyss he’d nearly just fallen into.

There was no doubt he’d only barely escaped death at that moment, and it was purely due to Kraznek. The alpha who gave him the most flak out of everyone in the group put his own life on the line to rescue Dron.

Dron crawled onto the solid ground before he rolled onto his back and placed one of his arms over his forehead as he tried to come to grips with what had just happened. It was a complete shock to his system.

He’d always thought that he would be ready to die, but being that close forced him to see the reality of the situation.

He didn’t want to die. He wanted to get to Tempest.

"You gotta watch your step there, Mark Chief." Kraznek stood over Dron, his signature semi smirk on his face.

"Thank you. You saved my life." Dron spoke, a bit of new found reverence in his voice for the man.

"That’s what a team is for, right?" Kraznek reached down and helped Dron to his feet.

Dron nodded but didn’t say anything in return. That was true for Dron. It was his responsibility to make sure everyone under his leadership came back to Thraqe unharmed, but if something were to happen to Dron there wouldn’t be much of a stink about it. The higher-ups would just assume that he wasn’t as skilled as they had given him credit for. If Dron were to die in some hole in Skoq, these people could all just go home and go on with their lives.

Kraznek had no real reason to want to save Dron and Dron knew it.

"We should head out, right?" Mikael said from where he was standing. He looked a bit nervous. When Dron looked around at the people in his group, he realized that all of them had that same look on their faces.

He wondered if they were worried that the weather might pick up.

"Yeah, let’s go. Watch your step." Dron ordered, and slowly the people started to make their way around the large crevice where they had spent the night before. Though they didn’t just walk past him, people shrugged at him, some actually said they were glad he was okay. What surprised him the most was the fact that both people from Thraqe and people from Skoq touched him. They actually laid their hands on him in a form of comfort.

It moved him in a way that he’d never been moved before. All his life he was considered the cursed one. The one people stayed away from simply because of what he looked like. No one touched him. It was against the societal norms.

Somewhere along the lines that had changed, and he didn’t even know how. He didn’t want to think too much about it, but he’d be lying if he said that he wasn’t excited about what that could mean when he got back to Thraqe with Tempest. Maybe they could live a normal life. Maybe now he would be more accepted as part of the community.

It was a simple and old hope he’d held, but the feeling of it actually being attainable was new.

Dron followed at the back of the pack, he made sure everyone got over the crack safely before they formed their lines and continued to walk along the perimeter of the cliff’s face.

"That was crazy." Mikael started to speak. He had taken his spot right next to Dron again.

"What? The windstorm?"

"No, Mark Chief, the fact that you almost fell to your death. That was the crazy part. Wind happens all the time. A legend like you almost dying...crazy."

Dron scoffed, "Legend. I’m far from a legend, kid."

Mikael blinked a few times before he looked up at Dron. "A legend is something or someone people tell stories about. Stories that bring fear or respect. Stories that reach far and wide."

Dron nodded his head once at the description. It was technically correct.

"Then you are a legend. Everyone knows about Dron the cursed alien. In every class, even here on Skoq people know about you, and this was supposed to be the end of the world. You’re going to have to admit it one day. You’re kind of a big deal." Mikael huffed and continued walking forward, but Dron slowed a bit.

He’d always seen his curse to be a hindrance, and it still was, but the kid was right. He was a legend in his own right. It was time he lived up to that.

That started with finding Tempest and then getting back to the Tine and the settlement to help them better their way of life.

The group of them walked for a long time. Only stopping every once in a while to drink or eat. Thankfully, the weather held up, and they didn’t have to rush to look for shelter.

That night they managed to find something that looked like a hunter’s den right at the edge of one of the rocks. It was perfect and it had supplies.

Dron and the rest of the group were finally able to relax for a bit before they set out on the next leg of their journey.

At least the group was. Dron was starting to feel his fated mate sickness flaring up again. It was getting harder and harder for him to suppress it. Harder for him to ignore the fact that he was so far away from Tempest.

What made it even worse was the fact that she hadn’t called to him all day. He knew that she was on her own journey to the human settlement and that she might not have a chance or get a signal, but not hearing from her was driving him mad.

He checked his wrist device for what seemed like the hundredth time that night, and Tempest was still in the same spot. She’d gotten to a blank area of the map. Dron assumed that was the human settlement. He hoped that she would find all that she was hoping for there. Hoped that it wasn’t as bad as he thought it could be.

Surviving on this planet as a native Ustean was hard, he just couldn’t understand how they could do it as humans.

Based on what he knew from Tempest, humans were frail and easily injured. They didn’t understand the language, didn’t know what fruits or game they could eat. It was a lose-lose situation.

Dron looked around the small space and watched everyone as they were relaxed and having a good time. He needed to get out of his head.

Tempest was fine. He was sure of it. And if something was wrong, she’d reach out to him or Mexyn would. Someone would reach out to him.

He took a deep breath and turned his head to Kraznek and the rest of the soldiers he’d brought to Skoq. They were all huddled in the corner playing a gambling game.

Each player would toss a handful of specifically colored rocks against the wall, and they had to guess how many of each color would land in a series of circles colored on the floor a few spots ahead of the wall. It was truly a game of chance. He’d played a lot by himself when he was a child.

Krex turned his head and saw Dron staring at them.

"Are we going to get in trouble?"

Technically gambling wasn’t allowed for the soldiers, but then again neither was traveling to Skoq and changing the missions given. They weren’t doing anything that they were supposed to do. Dron couldn’t care less about the game as long as no one tried to kill the other.

Dron shook his head no and waved his hand, indicating that Krex and the others should continue.

Kraznek turned in Dron direction. "Why don’t you come over here, Mark Chief, show this idiots how it’s done."

Dron was shocked but tried not to show it on his face.

Was Kraznek really asking him to play? As in, together with the rest of the people. Dron had never been invited to play with anyone who didn’t end up with them not trying to hurt him physically. It was always a trick. Maybe it was different now.

The rest of the soldiers looked up at Dron and were surprised to see him actually get up. They hooted and moved apart, allowing Dron the space to get to the center.

He was slightly uncomfortable when the group of them crowded around him.

"So what’s the bet?" Verux questioned.

Dron looked around and couldn’t stop the smile from forming. He knew that he was the boss, knew that in a fight they would look to him for guidance and orders, but at that moment while they were in the hunter’s den resting, it didn’t feel like they were just a group of soldiers.

For the first time Dron felt like he had a group of friends.

Dron placed his bet, and a few of the people around him scoffed as if they didn’t believe he could do what he bet he could. Dron bent down, and the ones closest to him moved in even closer, bending down slightly to watch his throw.

He flicked the rocks against the wall and watched as his exact bet came to play. There was a loud roar of excitement from the men around him. Several of them clapped him on the back and hooted in excitement.

Dron smiled wide. This feeling was new, and he couldn’t say that he hated it.
