Chapter 185: Chapter 185
Dron’s head bounced up and down. The world was upside down.
Consciousness slowly came back to him, and so did the pain.
"What is this? What is going on?" He groaned and tried to move his hands. They were down in front of him. He had to squint his eyes to see them. When he did, the last little bit of fight surged in his body. He was tied up.
"Get off me! Let me down, immediately." Dron struggled, but something held him fast.
"Mark Chief, you’re making this more difficult than it has to be."
He heard a voice he recognized. Dron turned his head only to see the back of Zeqon’s head. Zeqon was carrying Dron on his shoulder like a bag of grain.
"Why am I tied up? Where are we?" A panic swept through Dron in a wave. If they were bringing him back to Tine’s settlement than he was that much farther from Tempest.
"You’re tied up because there is no one here who’ll be able to take you at full strength, as for where we are I’d say less than half a day from the stronghold."
Dron settled for that. They were still on the way to the stronghold. Still on the way to Tempest.
"Put me down."
"I can’t. We’re also not fast enough to keep up with you. If you take off running, we’d just have to tackle you down again. Kraznek is in no shape to go up against you again."
Dron groaned, the bouncing was hurting him. It felt like his bones were rubbing against each other. It wasn’t as if he could run anyway. He wasn’t even sure he could walk.
"I’m not going to run. I’m fine." Dron spoke through a clenched jaw. He didn’t appreciate being carried like this, but he knew it was better than the other option, which was that they kept him held up somewhere until he came back to his senses.
Dron tried to focus, and he realized that Zeqon wasn’t just carrying him, he was carrying him while he all out sprinted. The power in the veteran alpha was remarkable. Probably only secondary to Dron himself.
"Zeqon, enough! That’s an order!" Dron barked out, though it sounded ridiculous as he had to speak through the bouncing footsteps.
He watched the alpha’s head turn from side to side as if he were making sure it was safe. A moment later, Zeqon came to a stop and slowly dropped Dron to the ground. Once Dron was on the ground Zeqon fell himself. He was wiped out.
Dron didn’t know how long he’d been carrying him, but he suspected it was a long way.
Dron’s feet were bound, as were his wrists.
Dron looked around and realized that it wasn’t his entire group with him. Kraznek, Dron and Verux. Those were the only ones. The other group was missing as well.
"Where is everyone?" Dron questioned doing his best to take the binds off his feet.
"Leave them on." Zeqon barked at Dron.
"I’ve already told you I’m not going to run. Do you intend to keep carrying me like some sort of omega? I promise you that’s not going to go over as well as you might think it will."
"Moon Goddess above, you think we want to do this!" Kraznek hissed at Dron. Though he kept his distance.
Dron focused his attention on the man. His arm was injured, secured with two sticks and some fabric. It also looked as if he were having a hard time taking in a full breath.
Dron felt bad. He knew that he’d caused those injuries.
"I don’t know what you intend to do."
"You could ask." Verux said, clearly annoyed.
"If you recall, I did. No one answered me." Dron finally managed to get the binds from his feet and stood. The pain pulsed through him, and he had to bend just to buffer the feeling.
Zeqon was the one who replied, "We’re on the way to the stronghold. We don’t know what might have happened on the phone call. It seems as if your mate is missing?"
Dron entire body sizzled with pain at the acknowledgement. He couldn’t talk he just nodded his head. The motion made it feel like his brain was sloshing around inside of him.
"That’s what we thought. We understand your need to get to her and also realize that the fated mate sickness is making it even worse. You need to get there quickly. We all decided that there was no way we’d let you run into that stronghold without any backup. Unfortunately, in your peak state you are too fast for even the strongest of us to keep up. It’s the pull. The pull from your fated mate that is driving you. We don’t have that."
"Are you suggesting that I wait for you?" Dron asked finally managing to push his pain back and stand tall.
"No, but in your present state you won’t be able to run as fast as before. We should be able to keep up now."
Dron knew he was telling the truth.
"Where is the rest of the group?"
"We left them with the alphas from Tine’s settlement. They are still going to come to the stronghold, but they won’t make it as quickly as we will."
They were separated. This was a bad situation, Dron knew it.
The only hope that he had was something Zeqon had said. It was the pull of his fated mate that was driving him. That could only mean that Tempest was still alive. As long as there was pain, there was something to live for.
When he could no longer feel her, then he would give up.
"If that’s the plan, then let’s go. I need to get there." Dron stated moving in the direction that had been running before. The pain. The pain was so severe.
He didn’t let it overtake him as it had before. He knew it had meaning now. Knew what was on the other side of the pain.
Tempest.
