Chapter 195: Chapter 195

The small hut that Tempest pulled Dron in was a far cry from their space back home.

The bed was small, the walls bare, and there was a layer of dust on nearly every surface. It didn’t matter though.

All that mattered was that Dron was next to her.

She turned and looked up at him.

His eyes locked onto hers.

Neither of them spoke for a moment, it was almost as if they were connecting all over again. Not their bodies but their souls.

Slowly, Dron reached up his hand and caressed her face.

His fingers shook slightly.

Tempest noticed that along with the tremble, there was something different about his face. As if he’d worn a mask of worry the entire time that he was gone and it had left wrinkles on his face.

"I’m here, Dron. I’m here." she whispered and just as she thought he nearly melted with relief.

"I thought I was strong. Thought I’d be able to get through this mission and make it back to you but I’m not. I’ve been going out of my mind every day that you were away."

"I know, so have I. They say it has something to do with fated mate sickness." Tempest replied.

"It doesn’t matter now. I’m not letting you out of my sight." Dron moved in closer, his hands skating down her arms and back up.

"I feel like you’ve said that before." Tempest smiled and leaned in closer to his touch.

"I was wrong before." Dron quickly replied.

Tempest chuckled slowly, "that’s not exactly reassuring."

"I am not trying to reassure you. I’m telling you what’s going to happen from here on out." Dron’s expression remained serious, "If the high royals demand I return to Thraqe tomorrow, you are coming with me. If Tine needs me to go to his settlement, you’ll be right by my side. If I need to relieve myself, You’ll probably be standing right outside the door."

Tempest raised an eyebrow in his direction, "Probably?"

"I thought you might like a bit of privacy from time to time."

"That’s very considerate of you." Tempest joked.

"I try." He smirked at her and her insides melted.

The simple expression made her laugh again. Something about the sound changed Dron’s face. Tempest watched his eyes close for a second as he took it in. When he opened them again, some of the heaviness on his expression was gone.

She hadn’t realized how much she had missed this.

Not just touching him or the way he made her feel when he touched her. She missed this. Talking to him. Teasing him. Watching him take something completely seriously because half the time he could tell when she was joking.

They were so different but had so much in common too.

Tempest let herself really look at him. She hadn’t been able to do that outside with everyone watching them. There had been too much happening. Too many people needing something from them. Now she could see all the little differences the time apart had made. His hair was longer and rougher around the edges, his clothing looked as if it had been through several battles, and there were small cuts and bruises scattered over the parts of his skin she could see. Even his markings seemed darker in some places, though she wondered if that was only because she knew something was changing beneath them now.

She ran her fingers over his chest, needing the confirmation that he was really there. Every night she had spent without him had felt like a piece of her was missing. She had tried to convince herself she could handle it. She was an adult. She had lived almost her entire life without Dron. A few days shouldn’t have made her feel as if she were falling apart.

But they had.

There had been moments when the ache inside her had been so strong she couldn’t tell if it was emotional or physical. Moments when she had wanted to scream simply because she couldn’t reach him. Even surrounded by Mexyn, Gerax and Rynax, there had always been this emptiness following her around.

It wasn’t there anymore.

Tempest breathed deeply and realized even that felt different. Easier.

Dron was here.

She could touch him whenever she wanted. She could hear his voice without depending on a wrist device. If she woke up tonight and reached across the bed, he would actually be there.

That thought settled something inside her she hadn’t realized was still shaking.

For the first time since he’d left, Tempest felt completely whole.

Tempest flattened her palms against his chest.

"I really missed you."

Dron covered one of her hands with his, "I know."

"Humble guy." Tempest joked, "No, I really missed you. There were times I would wake up and reach for you before I remembered you weren’t there. Then I started doing stupid things because sitting around waiting for you felt worse."

Dron huffed slightly, "I heard."

"It was for a good cause." Tempest narrowed her eyes on him.

"That’s what everyone said." Dron tilted his head to the side slightly.

"Everyone, huh?" Tempest looked to the side, "Traitors."

Dron sighed, he didn’t take the joke, "You traveled into Skoq without me."

"I had people with me."

Dron glared hard at Tempest. They both knew that it didn’t matter what people she had with her, it wasn’t enough for Dron.

His sighed before he moved his hand down to her waist. He pulled her closer until there was almost no space between them.

"I am not angry with you."

"Really, I honestly thought you’d be steaming mad."

"Steaming?" Dron questioned.

"Really, really mad."

"No, I’m not steaming mad. You survived."

"I did." Tempest nodded her head. She swallowed past a knot in her throat. If only Dron knew everything she had to do in order to survive, maybe he wouldn’t be so proud of her. There would be time to tell him everything. She wanted to tell him about the attack. About Rynax teaching her to fight, about Aliq, what she learned from Hen and the humans. She wanted to know everything that had happened with him too.

Just not now.

Right now she wanted something else.

Tempest slid her hands up his chest and around his neck.

Dron’s eyes darkened as he pressed his growing erections against her.

"I’m done talking." Tempest whispered.

"I noticed."

"You’re still talking."

"So are you."

"Dron." She grumbled.

"Tempest." He mimicked the sound of her voice.

Then she laughed, "God, I missed you."

Dron didn’t join in on the laughter this time. "I missed you more."

There was something in the way he said it that stole the humor from her. Tempest could feel everything behind those four words. Every night they had been apart. Every failed call. Every moment of wondering if the other was safe.

She rose up on her tiptoes and kissed him.

It started softly. Just a brushing of their lips over eachother.

Dron’s hand slid into her hair as he pulled her closer. Tempest held onto him, kissing him harder as all the longing she’d been trying to ignore came rushing back at once. There was no crowd around them now. No humans watching. No alphas waiting for orders. No Mexyn and Gerax interrupting them with another problem.

There was only Dron.

Tempest broke away long enough to breathe.

A deep growl rumbled in Dron’s chest, but he composed himself. "Lock the door." He ordered her.

Tempest’s eyes flicked to the weak wooden door of the small house. There was no lock.

"You’ve got to be kidding me. We can move something in front of it." Tempest said, trying desperately to find a solution to the problem.

Dron actually smiled. He crossed the small room and dragged the small bed across the floor. He placed the head of the bed right up against the door. He turned back in Tempest’s direction. The desire was clear on his face.

His gaze moved slowly over her. Hungrily. Carefully.

He moved closer to her and grabbed hold of her hand. He pulled it up and pressed a kiss there in the center of her palm. Tempest could feel the tenderness of it all the way in her chest.

Dron looked up at her. There was no more tenderness.

"Oh," She gasped, "There you are."

Dron stepped closer, the alpha instincts flaring behind his gaze.

Tempest backed up, Dron took another step closer.

She moved again until the back of her legs bumped against the small bed.

Dron’s mouth moved down but he didn’t press his lips to hers, almost as if he were asking for permission.

Tempest leaned up and kissed him before he could say anything else.

This time there was nothing gentle about the need between them.

She grabbed at his clothing, impatient with every layer keeping her from the warmth of his skin. Dron was no better. His hands moved over her as though he needed to relearn every curve, every place he’d been denied while they were apart.

Tempest felt herself falling backward.

The bed creaked loudly when Dron followed her down.

She wrapped her arms around him and pulled him closer. The feeling of being completely surrounded by him.

Safe.

Home.

Dron kissed her again, slower this time and Tempest let herself fall completely into him.

There would be time for the high royals tomorrow.

For alliances. For war.

For everything that waited for them outside of the dusty little hut.

Tonight, Tempest only wanted her mate.

And when Dron’s hands began to carefully peel away the layers separating them, she knew there was nowhere else in the universe she wanted to be.
