Martial Immortality: Starting with the Spirit Beast Scroll
Chapter 339 - 327: Void Trapping SkillChapter 339: Chapter 327: Void Trapping Skill
Of course, Zhao Lin wasn’t about to let the bulging-eyed man go. He burst into motion, giving chase right on his tail.
’It seems this won’t be resolved peacefully. I have to use my life-saving trump card.’
Seeing Zhao Lin close in, the bulging-eyed man’s heart nearly leaped from his chest. He gritted his teeth, slapped his storage pouch, and pulled out a talisman, which he thrust out with his palm.
With a HUM, the talisman instantly transformed into countless cyan gas clouds, fanning out behind him.
The clouds grew in the wind, spinning rapidly until they became large vortexes.
These vortexes had immense suction, sweeping up birds from the sky, beasts from the ground, and every bit of sand, stone, and plant life. They were like hundreds of miniature tornadoes, their power utterly astounding.
’This Magic...’
Zhao Lin’s heart sank, and he immediately stopped in his tracks.
The Magic consisted of numerous vortexes covering a vast area. Trying to go around it would likely take even longer than just waiting for the spell to dissipate on its own.
Zhao Lin used his Inner Vision Spirit Cultivation Map and saw three flashing words appear in the fifth grid: Void Trapping Skill!
’So it’s this Magic. No wonder!’
Zhao Lin was glad he hadn’t recklessly charged in.
The Void Trapping Skill was a wind-element Magic that released numerous powerful vortexes. They acted like traps, meant to ensnare enemies or halt a pursuit.
If he were to blunder into it, he’d be caught and torn apart by the vortexes. It would be a dangerous situation if the bulging-eyed man decided to turn back for a surprise attack.
The bulging-eyed man glanced back, sighing in relief.
He wanted to shout a few threats to save face, but when he saw Zhao Lin’s profound gaze fixed on him, as if memorizing his appearance, he shivered involuntarily. Without another word, he turned and fled, not daring to look back.
"You think you can escape just like that?"
Zhao Lin sneered. He took two deep sniffs, memorizing the scent left by the bulging-eyed man, then turned back to pick up the storage pouch from the ground.
In that brief moment, the bulging-eyed man had vanished. The Spiritual Power of the Void Trapping Skill was nearly depleted, and the vortexes began to slow.
Zhao Lin stepped forward to observe the Magic up close.
On the Spirit Cultivation Map, a faint, four-petaled plum blossom appeared next to the Void Trapping Skill, indicating that the talisman was high-grade and had unleashed an Expert-level Magic.
A thought suddenly struck Zhao Lin. ’This Magic is a potent tool for entrapment. It’s good for both offense and defense. I happen to need a wind-element Magic... why not this one?’
The more he thought about it, the more he wanted it. Seeing the Magic was on its last legs, he made a decisive move, approaching one of the vortexes to feel the fluctuations of Mana it gave off.
A moment later, the Spirit Cultivation Map fell silent.
The words "Spirit Void Trapping Skill" and the plum blossom became incredibly solid. The Magic had been successfully captured!
Zhao Lin gazed in the direction the bulging-eyed man had vanished, thinking, ’That bandit cultivator must have other escape techniques. I might not be able to catch him if I go after him now.’
’Better to wait a bit and corner him in his own lair. His scent won’t dissipate for a couple of hours anyway.’
With this in mind, Zhao Lin took four Spirit Stones from his storage pouch. After a moment’s hesitation, he took out sixteen.
Since he was going to cultivate this Magic, he might as well get it to the Minor Achievement Level. It might even come in handy against the bandit cultivator in a little while.
Zhao Lin released his Divine Sense and an ultrasonic wave, sweeping the surrounding forest. After confirming no one was nearby, he grabbed the Spirit Stones and began absorbing the Spiritual Qi within.
In a short time, three of the Void Trapping Skill’s four plum blossom petals turned a deep crimson, and new memories concerning the Magic flooded his mind and body.
"Void Trapping Skill!"
Zhao Lin’s hands formed the Spell, and he began to practice.
At first, he could only summon a few vortexes, and the effect was less than ideal. But with constant practice, his technique grew more adept and his control over his Spiritual Power became more precise.
In less than an hour, Zhao Lin had mastered the Magic. He could now unleash dozens of vortexes at once and exert basic control over their formation and movement.
The Magic was incredibly useful, but it consumed far more Spiritual Power than an ordinary spell.
If he cultivated it to the Expert Level, casting this one Magic would likely consume nearly a third of his Spiritual Power.
After he finished cultivating the Magic, Zhao Lin sat cross-legged, placed a Spirit Stone against his abdomen over his Qi Sea, and began circulating his energy to restore his Spiritual Power.
About forty-five minutes later, he stood and glanced at the handsome cultivator’s corpse. He walked over, picking up the body and the severed head.
He went to a sheltered spot on the hillside and used an iron ruler to dig a pit, tossing both parts inside.
Qiuyang County had a bounty on bandit cultivators, and this corpse could be exchanged for merit points and Spirit Stones. If left in the open, it would likely be devoured by wild animals.
Just as Zhao Lin was about to shovel dirt into the pit, he noticed the bulging-eyed man’s magic treasure was hanging from his iron ruler. He opened its handguard and took down the Heaven-piercing Halberd.
He released his Divine Sense, intending to erase the imprint upon the magic treasure.
But after a few attempts, he found it wasn’t going to be easy.
The bulging-eyed man was at the Qi Refining Eighth Layer; his Divine Sense was far stronger than Zhao Lin’s. Furthermore, the magic treasure had been nurtured over a long period, making the Divine Sense imprint exceptionally strong.
Erasing the original owner’s Divine Sense would take at least a day or two of work.
Since he couldn’t remove the Divine Sense for now, Zhao Lin tossed the Heaven-piercing Halberd into the pit as well, buried it, and then concealed the spot with a large boulder.
This would prevent wild animals from digging up the corpse, and it would also force the bulging-eyed man to waste some effort finding his magic treasure, should he come back for it.
By the time he was done with all this, it was late afternoon. The sun was dipping toward the western horizon, casting a golden glow over the land.
Zhao Lin decided against going to Yinfeng Valley today. As the saying goes, good things come in pairs; he would deal with the bulging-eyed man first.
He scanned his surroundings, then shot off in the direction the bulging-eyed man had fled.
...
The bulging-eyed man returned to his lair—a mountain of white rock less than a hundred li from Yinfeng Valley.
Baiyan Mountain rose several hundred feet high. Not a single blade of grass grew on its slopes, which were covered in marks of erosion from wind and sand. The mountain was riddled with caves of all sizes.
These caves weren’t natural. A colony of Demon Beasts known as Violent Earth Pigs had once lived here, their numbers swelling to over a hundred. They had excavated a vast network of tunnels in the mountain to use as dens.
Years later, the Violent Earth Pigs encountered their natural predator, a Cyan-Scaled Python. Within days, the majority of them were dead or wounded, and the survivors were forced to flee.
Six months ago, two bandit cultivators discovered the place. They slew the Cyan-Scaled Python and took over the mountain, using it as a base to rob Qi Refining Realm cultivators traveling to and from Yinfeng Valley.
Back in the cave, the bulging-eyed man collapsed on the ground, his back against the rock wall. His heart finally began to settle.
The cave system was a labyrinth with countless exits; he wouldn’t be afraid even if he were surrounded.
’Damn my fucking luck!’
The bulging-eyed man felt a wave of despair. His companion was dead and his magic treasure was lost. Now that he was all alone, it would be difficult for him to hold his ground.
"I’ll get him back for this sooner or later!"
The bulging-eyed man said this with hatred, but even he didn’t really believe it.
Zhao Lin was only at the Qi Refining Third Layer, yet he had been forced to flee in disgrace. In another year or two, when Zhao Lin reached the Qi Refining Fourth Layer, he wouldn’t stand a chance.
The only consolation was that all the wealth the two of them had plundered was now his alone.
The bulging-eyed man had no idea that at that very moment, a pair of eyes was watching him from a nearby thicket.
