During afternoon tea, Gwen, who had come in to work on Sunday, was sitting in the living room enjoying little cookies and English tea with everyone else.
Catherine Hepburn had baked the cookies, while Henry had just brewed the tea. The two went together beautifully, making for a combination that could earn nothing but praise.
Before she had even received the practice-workbook "gift" from the Kryptonian, Skye had already been beaten into submission by Gwen. Her studies had been pushed all the way back to seventh grade, and she had to pick up many things all over again.
That was also because Gwen had "accidentally" dug out Skye’s hidden seventh-grade report card. The grades on it had truly opened the eyes of this gifted student.
If she told people that Skye was the student she had taught, she probably wouldn’t be able to find anyone willing to hire her as a tutor afterward.
Gwen didn’t dare ask for much. At the very least, Skye’s grades had to be passing...
So under Gwen’s high-pressure regime, Skye, who was practically burned to ashes, was now sprawled across the dining table, groaning weakly. Her head was filled with the Civil War, whose starting year God only knew, along with geometry calculations, physical phenomena, chemical reactions...
Seeing that the grandmother was no longer defending the girl, Henry began pondering how to increase the intensity of Skye’s studies.
Previously, the grandmother’s favoritism toward her granddaughter had blocked him. Many of his ideas had been fiercely condemned, and he had ultimately given up. Now that the old lady’s attitude had changed, of course he had to "do what was best for Skye" and get her to straighten out her priorities and focus on studying.
There was no need to jump straight to Hell difficulty, either. Just increase the difficulty a little. For example, give her a top-student daily schedule, planned down to the minute, and tighten the screws on this lazy child.
The Kryptonian was racking his brain for some evil—no, good ideas when he suddenly heard someone call out.
"Henry," Gwen called.
"Yes?"
"Do me a favor."
"Go on."
"Come with me to my prom."
...
The Kryptonian’s brain had tied itself into a knot, and he failed to understand the significance behind the request. After thinking for a long while, Henry could only squeeze out one sentence.
"I can go?"
"Our prom doesn’t prohibit outsiders from attending. As long as you buy a ticket, you can participate. Oh, of course, you need an invitation from a graduating student. It’s not like any two random strangers can buy tickets and walk in. So I suppose there is a restriction after all."
"Prom tickets are sold?" Henry asked in astonishment, his eyes widening.
Gwen was equally surprised.
"Of course. What did you think? How else would we pay for the venue decorations? The food, music, and DJ? Is the school paying for everything? Or are the parents sponsoring it? Come on. Obviously it’s funded through ticket sales. You didn’t know that?"
All right, that made perfect sense...
Henry asked again, "So why don’t you find one of your classmates? Why ask me? With your looks, it’s not like nobody invited you. Little beauty."
"Hehe, you think I’m pretty too. Thanks."
Gwen happily brushed back her hair before continuing.
"But no one actually invited me.
"Not even one of those single nerds came forward. It’s all because George wouldn’t let me date in high school. I turned down a few people, and now everyone thinks I’m difficult to approach. It’s so annoying.
"You know, George even came to my school wearing his uniform once. It was supposed to be an ordinary police safety-awareness lecture, but this police captain actually came in person and even announced who he was. I was so embarrassed I wanted to hide in the bathroom. Ahhh!"
Gwen angrily curled all ten fingers into claws, as if she wanted to strangle someone.
Unfortunately, the target was her own father, so she couldn’t actually do it. But judging from the girl’s expression, one could probably imagine just how mortifying the scene had been.
To be fair, being a single father wasn’t easy for a police officer, either. At least when it came to maintaining the proper boundaries with his daughter, this particular police captain clearly wasn’t very good at judging them.
Henry said, "All right, nobody invited you, but you can invite someone yourself. Even if you don’t have anyone you like, maybe there’s some wallflower of a boy waiting for you to bring him a little warmth."
"And that’s why I came to you."
"Me?" The Kryptonian was confused.
"I heard from Skye and Catherine that you’ve never gone to school, so you’ve definitely never attended a prom, right? Why not go experience one? There will be lots of beautiful, youthful girls just like me."
"That’s your reason for asking me? You want to take me along so I can experience it?"
Henry was dumbfounded.
Then he gave the girl a sidelong look, his face full of disbelief.
"Don’t tell me you want to compete with some bitch, so you need a sucker to make yourself look good."
Gwen said unhappily, "You’ve watched too many movies! Do you really think American high schools are crawling with bitches? And why would I take a bearded man like you? To tell everyone my boyfriend is Santa Claus?
"Ah, forget it. I thought you’d be happy to get a chance to attend a high school prom you’ve never experienced. If you don’t want to go, just pretend I never invited you.
"When the time comes, I’ll just be a lonely, thorny rose standing by the wall, drinking nonalcoholic punch while watching a bunch of monkeys dance in the middle of the room. I won’t feel lonely at all.
"Ah~ That reminds me. I wonder how blue the sky over the Aegean is, or how beautiful the sea must be. I wonder if I’ll ever get the chance to go there in my lifetime. The Parthenon, Athens, the Odyssey...
"Oh, I don’t mean anything by that. I’m definitely not saying that you guys happily went on vacation without me. I’m just making plans for my own future. Hopefully one day I’ll get to see what the Aegean Sea actually looks like.
"Do you think the beach at an Aegean resort island is the same as Manhattan Beach in Brooklyn? I think it should be. They’re both primarily made of silicon dioxide, with feldspar, mica, calcite, and perhaps fragments of seashells.
"Ah, I really want to see it. Oh, I’m not blaming you for not taking me. George would never have agreed to something like that anyway, and realistically, it wouldn’t have been appropriate.
"After all, an Aegean vacation isn’t cheap. How could a girl from a working-class family like me possibly afford it? Did you guys go by boat?
"I heard from Skye that you took a yacht. I’ve never been on a yacht, either. I wonder if I’ll ever have the chance to wear a bikini, put on a big sun hat, sit aboard a yacht, and look out over the sea.
"Oh, don’t mistake me for a materialistic girl. But you understand that people naturally yearn for beautiful and novel things, especially things they’ve never personally experienced.
"What a shame. Look, I don’t get to experience the wonders of the Aegean, but I offered you a once-in-a-lifetime chance to experience high school prom, and you act like you couldn’t care less.
"I knew it. The Aegean must be more interesting to you than a high school prom. I think I should just ask George to go with me. Having him stand there in uniform and ruin the atmosphere of the entire dance would probably be pretty hilarious."
All right, then!
Had this Gwen-Spider been possessed by Peter Parker?
Or did everyone destined to become a spider secretly possess a gift for nonstop chatter, merely waiting for an opportunity to go completely off the rails?
