“Good tea,” I complimented.

“...Thanks,” Stick said dryly as he held an ice pack against one side of his face.

Spider-Man, Elektra, and I each had a cup as we sat around one of those low floor tables. I took another long sip while a gasp of surprise sounded from across the room.

The martial artists we had beaten were currently crowded around Anna. I’d slipped her the Ring of the Sun Princess, so she was using her very convincing “Iron Fist” artifacts to impress them with the supposed might of K’un-Lun.

Man, was the reward so low because the Chaste were weak or because they’d been deceived so easily?

I almost felt bad for them.

Almost.

“Student surpassing the master, huh?” I smirked at the dark bruise spreading across Stick’s face.

“What can I say? I’m a good teacher.” Stick grunted as he adjusted the ice pack. “Damn girl. Couldn’t you have hit a little gentler?”

“I’m a good student.” Elektra rolled her eyes.

Spider-Man stifled a laugh while I snorted directly in Stick’s face.

“Brats,” Stick grumbled.

“So, we’re cool about the kids, then?” Spider-Man asked. His mask was raised just enough for him to munch on a snack. “Because I’m a real big fan of not holding abducted children.”

Stick fell silent. Despite being blind, the old man somehow managed to direct an impressive stink eye toward us.

“Stick,” Elektra warned.

He opened his mouth, but another cry of amazement rose from the increasingly reverent crowd around Anna. Stick’s lips thinned at the resulting cheer.

Honestly, I didn’t think the beating we gave Chaste had fully convinced him. Hearing his own people marvel over Anna’s supposed Iron Fist powers seemed to be wearing him down, though.

“The Black Sky is dangerous,” Stick finally said.

“More dangerous than the Iron Fist?” I snapped my fingers and teleported behind him. “Or me?”

He failed to hide his twitch when my voice suddenly came from over his shoulder.

“The prophecies were never... exact about the Black Sky’s nature,” Stick said carefully. “Still, even esteemed masters from K’un-Lun should be wary. The Hand would not invest so many resources into finding candidates without reason.”

“The Hand is a fucking mess,” I said as I teleported back into my chair.

“They are dangerous,” Stick insisted. “We have warred against them for centuries while they hid in the shadows. I’ll admit we’ve never faced such... esoteric methods, but the Hand’s greatest strength has always been the hidden blade waiting in the dark.”

“Alexandra Reid, Madame Gao, Bakuto, Murakami, and Sowande,” I said. “Those are the aliases of their current leaders.”

Stick went rigid. Judging by his expression, he must have recognized at least a few of those names.

“So, I’ll help you shine some light on the Hand.” I leaned back in my chair. “You just take care of the kids. And no, that isn’t some freaking euphemism. Just give them somewhere to sleep, relax, and eat.”

“The base isn’t equipped to care for so many—”

“Dude...” I waved a hand before remembering he was blind. “You could fit a hundred people in here and still have room. There’s no way you’re going to tell me you don’t have the space.”

Stick rubbed his forehead and sighed.

“...All right. I’ll speak to the other leaders.” He frowned. “But we’re not a daycare.”

“I know someone who should be able to help sort things out with the kids,” I said. Hopefully Coulson would get back to me soon.

I took another sip of tea before smiling.

“Of course, now that we’re friends, allow this young master to enlighten you on the secrets of the Hand and their new little Hydra friends.”

“Aughhhhhhh.” Anna groaned into my shoulder, her ears burning red. “Kill me... I never wanna do that again.”

I rubbed her back while stifling a laugh. “You would’ve made a star actress, you know.”

That earned me a flurry of light punches.

“Okay, okay.” I raised my hands in surrender as Anna pouted at me. “How about we splurge on dinner? Didn’t you say you wanted to try some restaurants?”

“...Triple bacon-wrapped hot dog?”

“Triple bacon-wrapped hot dog,” I affirmed with a laugh.

Anna huffed before holding both arms out toward me. “Carry me.”

“As you wish, Lady Iron Fist.”

I pulled her onto my back, and her arms wrapped around my neck as I stood.

“Am I forgiven now?”

“Nope.” Anna tightened her hold around me.

I snorted as I carried her across the rooftop. The Chaste had done pretty well for themselves, buying out all three connected buildings and turning them into a single base.

Spider-Man sat near the edge of the roof, staring out over the city. Even with the mask covering his face, I could tell he was still reeling from everything he had learned.

I was starting to regret not asking Tony about Peter Parker. I was damn curious about which version of Spider-Man I was talking to, but I also didn’t want to expose his identity to Tony.

Maybe dumping the history of two secret societies on him had been a little much. He still seemed fairly early in his career, and I felt a twinge of guilt over joking about how much stranger his life would become.

“Yo.” I waved to get his attention. “We’re going to grab some food. You want to come? Our treat.”

Spider-Man twitched before turning toward us. “Uh...” He shook his head as if clearing it. “Sure, but do you mind answering one thing first?”

“Shoot.”

“You said things were only going to get weirder for me.” Spider-Man fidgeted with his fingers. “Does it really get weirder than...” He motioned vaguely around himself with both hands. “All of this

My lips thinned as I stared at him. I still didn’t know which version of Spider-Man I was dealing with, but the answer remained the same.

“I’d love to tell you it doesn’t.” I shook my head. “But things are only going to get crazier from here. I might be able to give you a few warnings, though.”

Sandman, the Lizard, and Doctor Otto Octavius were all potentially avoidable villains. With enough luck, I could stop their transformations before they descended into villainy. Tony’s dossiers hadn’t mentioned any of them yet, so the best-case scenario was that they simply didn’t exist in this world.

I wasn’t betting on it.

Kingpin and Norman Osborn both existed on this Earth, though neither had begun their more villainous lifestyles yet.

“...I almost don’t even want to hear it.” Spider-Man gave a dark chuckle before shaking his head and standing. “But I have to, don’t I? Somebody has to help.”

“That’s why you’re the best Spider-Man.” I gave him a thumbs-up.

Anna raised both hands from behind my shoulders and gave him two thumbs-up as well.

“If it makes you feel better, there’ll be plenty more weird shit, but there should also be a lot more heroes stepping up to the plate.”

“That’s a relief,” Spider-Man said. “I’ve already got my hands full with New York. I can’t imagine trying to be like Iron Man.”

He shook his head before laughing.

“So, where do you guys want to eat? I’ll probably get there first.”

“Oh, you think you can beat me?” I raised an eyebrow and shifted my stance.

Spider-Man looked taken aback for half a second before placing a hand against his chest. “Of course I can. You’re looking at the fastest spider in the East!”

“That sounds like something we should put to the test.” I hummed before glancing back at Anna. “You up for a little race?”

Anna let out a long, exasperated sigh.

“Boys,” she muttered, rolling her eyes.

Despite her complaint, she tightened her arms around my shoulders and settled more securely against my back.

“Hmm... first one to the Upper East Side wins?” I suggested.

Spider-Man crouched near the edge of the rooftop, one hand pressed against the concrete as he prepared to launch himself forward.

“Works for me.” He tilted his head in my direction. “You sure you can handle it?”

“You should be asking yourself that.” I grinned and lowered myself into a starting position.

Come on, Gacha...

[Rolling Bronze Gacha Ticket]

[Despair Aura I]

|Common Ability|

Allows you to emit an aura of despair that makes people feel uneasy, while weaker targets may experience fear.

Something clicked into place, and I felt another slot open in the back of my mind.

Huh. Some kind of bonus for reaching five abilities?

It wasn’t exactly useful for a race, but I would never complain about getting another ability slot.

My body lit up as I slotted in Blessing.

“Ready?” Spider-Man asked.

“Yep.” I grinned.

Spider-Man began the countdown. The instant he reached zero, we both launched ourselves from the rooftop.

I shot into the sky with a crack of thunder as the distance ahead of me seemed to vanish. Beside me, Spider-Man whipped across the skyline on a strand of webbing, swinging between the buildings with effortless grace.

I couldn’t help but laugh with glee.

Marvel Earth might have sucked, but damn, I couldn’t complain too much.

“Double time!” J. Jonah Jameson roared. “If those photographs aren’t on my desk in ten minutes, don’t bother coming back!”

The new assistant scrambled from the office so quickly he nearly tore the door from its hinges.

Jameson snatched a cigar from his desk and grumbled as he bit down on the end. Nobody had standards anymore. Billionaires were flying around in mechanized suits while the public applauded like trained seals. Worse, rumors claimed another masked lunatic had begun prowling his own city.

He could only hope they were exaggerated.

Spider-Man? What kind of ridiculous name was that?

Jameson grabbed his coffee and marched toward the window, already debating tomorrow’s headline. He raised the cup toward his lips.

A crack of thunder shook the glass.

Jameson flinched and dumped hot coffee down the front of his shirt as two figures raced past the window. One swung between the buildings in red and blue while the other soared through the air with someone clinging to his back.

Jameson’s eye twitched.

“MENACES!”
