...
’If I play the cards just right, I might be able to see what lies beneath that reluctant acceptance.’ That’s what Loki had thought before he found Thor.
But the Thor he found wasn’t that loud anymore; he didn’t even seem like the Thor that had been exiled. He was helping the people who had built a stronghold around Mjolnir in the morning, the same people he had thrashed around to get to the thing. But not once did he look at the hammer.
By afternoon, he was moving through the city, helping anyone who needed it. And at night, he sat outside his accommodation and read something on the device mortals called a laptop.
He was laughing. Not the boisterous way he used to do when drinking. It was controlled; he seemed truly at peace discussing and talking things over a cup of coffee with a woman. His eyes, they had changed completely.
Had his brother truly accepted his exile even after he was raised with the sole purpose of inheriting the throne of Asgard? There was no way.
There was no telling what they were laughing about before he arrived. But the woman asked him an interesting question under Loki’s mild suggestion.
"Don’t you want to go back home? You said they were at war." It seemed like his brother had opened up about being Thor from Asgard to this mortal female, and her question didn’t surprise him.
The question made Thor pause for a moment. He looked at the can of beer in his hand and at the ground for a moment before smiling.
"My brother is there. He may not be as strong as me... from before. But he’s always been smarter than me, so I know he’ll handle it well until Allfather wakes up." He sipped the beer, gazing at the night sky.
He still had that longing in his eyes, but also a sense of acceptance that he might never get to return home.
Loki couldn’t help but blink at the words and the face his brother had made just now.
He thought someone had really pulled a fast one on him and spent the better half of the next few days trying to undo the magic cast on him.
"Is this some nightmare?" That was all he could think as Thor’s words kept echoing in his ear.

Now, to understand the predicament of the one who caused this change in two gods at once, we’d have to move back to the night of the party. John’s own situation wasn’t looking very good.
At least from an objective point of view.
He had fallen into the assimilation right in the middle of the hall. In truth, there was no indication of when he’d wake up. But as he had expected, someone had kept an exclusive eye on his movements.
Natasha had arrived 30 minutes after the fight had ended. And she didn’t come alone. SHIELD’s best followed after her since the matter had come Fury’s attention.
It was a bit too big to hide since something like that happened at Harry Osborn’s party, a hotbed for reporters and millionaires connected to the Osborn family.
After arriving and cordoning the party hall off, it took them 2 hours to clean the built-up compound and evacuate the unconscious guests. It took another hour to analyse the compound and create medicine for the overdosed guests before sending them off to the hospitals.
Now, normally this wasn’t SHIELD’s place to interfere, but they picked up clues of AIM’s involvement. An organization they had been following for their illegal weapons dealing in the Middle East.
And Natasha was the one who reported, since she also had a personal stake in this matter. John, who was right in the middle of this fiasco.
Two more hours had passed since her arrival, and the agents, all decked out in Hazmat suits, looked at the containment cell in the middle with bright lights pouring in from all angles. The agents outside were busy role-playing FBI to keep the rabid press out of the picture.
The marble floor was decimated and dull from the heavy chemicals used to remove the gathered compound. The entire place, alongside its expensive décor and items, was decimated like a herd of angry mammoths had passed through here with a touch of Lysol.
"This isn’t getting anywhere." Maria Hill sighed while typing a report on her tablet.
"Well, we can still block the CEO of Oscorp for a few days even if it is his property." Natasha shrugged as the agents had just finished cleaning all the built-up compound in this place.
She could finally say goodbye to the stuffy, sweaty hazmat suit. It really didn’t mesh well with her skin-tight combat suit, and she could feel beads of sweat sliding beneath the Kevlar-like material.
But Maria had another problem aside from the suit to worry about.
"I am talking about that one." She pointed her chin towards the see-through glass container in the middle of the hall.
Inside it was John, eyes closed, and his hands raised high above his head like he was in a pose off.
"What is he even doing?" Maria wondered, observing the body that could easily put Greek sculptures to shame.
"Asserting dominance, I believe." Natasha raised a brow as a SHIELD agent entered the glass box with a syringe in hand with a deep breath like he was a mortal man about to face Goliath.
And unlike the researchers that went before this one, he took a couple more steps before collapsing to the ground like an invisible hand had pressed him down. He was fished out with the rope tied around his ankle.
Maria and Natasha had seen this scene play out a dozen times. First, it was the researchers, then agents. All met the same end when they approached John with the intention to get a DNA sample. Everyone fell unconscious after entering the 8-meter area around him.
The reason they still kept trying was that these grubby, curious scientists, brought here to study the compound and help awaken the affected people, found something that intrigued them a bit too much.
"Is there a force field around him?" Maria muttered as nothing showed up on the scanners.
Even then, everyone in the room could feel a certain energy pressing on them when they stepped near the humming glass and metal frame that boxed this person.
"Is he really human?" One of the researchers questioned while studying a scan of John’s body.
This too didn’t come easy. They had to place the machines outside the containment cell. They had finally learned their lesson after losing two state-of-the-art scanners because of their eagerness.
Maria and Natasha glanced over at the new data. And the moment they saw the bone thickness and muscle density, they could understand why that question came out.
But there was something way more inhuman about John than the demon-like face, made of muscle, on his back.
’This brain... it looks satanic.’ With a little focus, Maria was able to make out a rough outline of a scowling demon in John’s brain. A face that matched the one on his back. It wasn’t clear, but it did jump out to anyone paying attention.
Even Natasha understood why these researchers were so eager to rush in there to get a sample. It was like finding a whole other species of human. In a way, she too wanted to step inside and try to get a sample.
It was too bad that they couldn’t use the hair strands contaminated by the poisonous compound they had cleared. For now, they could only wait for higher command before making a decision.
And the person who could issue that command came in person.
"This place smells lovely." And at last, Fury walked in an hour later, in the dead of the night, with a not-so-amused smirk.
’First the entire world decides to restart the nuclear arms race at midnight, and now this...’ Fury looked over the scans twice with his eye to make sure it worked properly.
"Any samples?" He turned to Maria, who shook her head.
After hearing her explanation and the reports from the ones who had tried before, it was concluded that the energy field knocked people unconscious and broke any machine or item in a 5-meter radius. The closer one was to John, the stronger the effect.
"Agent Romanoff, you are up." Fury gave the tablet back to Maria.
Natasha was the one in charge of keeping an eye on John, and she had sent him a report while he was in the emergency meeting with the WSC.
Using an excuse, he checked the half-complete report in the bathroom. It had some recovered files from Stark Expo; it had been deleted by someone trying to cover up after John. It linked him with the Kraven case, and there was also Natasha’s personal observation and estimation about this new factor.
’Strength that is beyond human, precise movements and unbelievable ability to read attacks.’ Fury felt like he was watching a super soldier on gear.
But that wasn’t even the most impressive part about this young man.
All of it reminded him of the incident 5 months ago.
