Toodaloo.

...

"Yelena Belova."

One name was enough to change the entire atmosphere of the place.

Natasha’s smile froze for a second. It was the first time her mask had slipped. Soon, the entire flirty vibe retreated behind the coldness that took over her face.

But all that had nothing on the fire smouldering in her narrowed eyes as her entire being focused on him.

"Where did you hear that name?" Even if she had tried hard to not let it happen, her brow furrowed a little in that moment.

She was caught so off-guard that she had forgotten to play the usual play dumb first card and hopped straight into the action. The knife she had hidden in the sleeve of the magenta blouse was already out in her palm. The black edge pressed against his neck.

"Do you really think this’ll get you an answer?" John looked right into her eyes without so much as a change of tone.

Natasha could feel the sureness in his voice. It wasn’t arrogance, just a cold fact that brought her back to reality. The knife in her hand, it felt like she had pressed it against solid steel.

It probably won’t even tickle him, much less get an answer out of him. Physically overpowering him wasn’t an option for her. But there was another way.

"For losing my temper, I apologize." She slid the knife back into her sleeve and stepped onto the floor with a heavy sigh.

"It’s ok." John didn’t take offence to it. In fact, it only confirmed that his plan would work.

Even then, he clearly remembered that burst of killing intent she had earlier. It was way sharper and stronger than he had expected it to be. And because of his sharp senses, he saw all that murderous aura retreat under the cover of this mysterious beauty she had.

Now, she may not measure up to super soldiers, gods, and powered-up superheroes of Marvel. But if there was a peak of humanity in the world of Marvel, it stood before him.

’Even the Hanma blood inside me recognizes her as worthy.’ And that fact was the main reason he had this aversion when she got too touchy.

The blood inside didn’t just look at her as a worthy fighter. It had also deemed her someone who could carry the Hanma lineage; honestly, a very disturbing thought that his body was making such evaluations on its own, and he wanted to just shut it all down.

’But it’s hard to do that when she is like this...’ His sigh deepened as she sat down on his lap, looking at him with a sweet smile once again.

"An apology made of words is worthless." She said.

"We’ve been over this." He really wanted to leave.

"I mean it is very... very effective with you. Probably the only method I have." She picked his hand and placed it on her thigh, sliding it up her skirt while holding eye contact.

It was just one of the methods that would make him uncomfortable.

And feeling the warm, supple flesh beneath the thin stocking, John felt a wave of cold water pouring all over his excitement.

He finally understood the reason for his aversion. He previously thought it to be pity, but that wasn’t it. Rather than aversion, it was close to anger.

The bloodline felt anger that someone it acknowledged would go use herself as a tool even if it was the last thing she wanted.

"If you don’t stop, forget getting anything else from me." The Hanma bloodline was a complicated, unreasonable thing with an overinflated ego.

And even if it came with its downsides, he had decided to live with them. But it worked in his favour at times like this as well.

"Noted..." Natasha stopped as his palm was pressed firmly between her thighs. She only winked at his questioning gaze. "You asked me to stop, and I stopped."

’She really wants to have the last word, huh.’ John made sure to remember that he needed to be clearer from now on.

"Now that I have listened, can you tell me who told you that name?" Her tone turned neutral as the earlier seductiveness vanished.

"Who do you think told me?" John tilted his head, looking into clear eyes.

"John Doe... Does he know that much?" She was equally intrigued and alarmed.

And now that she had landed on the exact name he wanted, John reeled in the hooked shark.

"He knows enough, but doesn’t give it out for free." He sighed like he had to pay a high price for this.

"Where is she?" Natasha felt a sharp pain go through her head.

"I don’t know."

"Then what exactly did Doe give you?"

"Confirmation that she’s alive, active as a Black Widow, and chemically controlled by Dreykov. Nothing more."

The gears in Natasha’s head started turning rapidly.

Didn’t she kill Dreykov in Budapest? How was he alive? What did she miss? More than that, she had left Yelena to become a Black Widow.

"You are sweating." John noticed the single bead of sweat on her forehead.

"Can’t call myself a woman if I don’t get wet in the arms of a handsome guy." She controlled her breath, holding her expression.

"Control yourself; I am only 18." He decided not to probe deeper.

"...Legal."

John shook his head at her desperate jokes, but he could only see the swirl of the disarrayed emotions that Natasha tried to hide. The biggest surprise was that she wasn’t asking the hundred questions he had expected and had somewhat accepted his information.

’Did I build up the John Doe character a bit too much, or does SHIELD really think that much of me? Like come on man.’ He could only blink as his writer persona was becoming a real mastermind in the shadows for some reason.

But more than that, the real issue was that Natasha had decided to mull over everything right in his lap for some reason. If someone walked in right now, they’d be in deep trouble, especially her. The only saving grace was that there were no cameras or windows here.

Still, he allowed her to absorb the information since he had vowed to sacrifice his body if needed, and now was the time. No other reason, really.

Her emotions were slowly coming together as she regained her composure. And in about 5 minutes, she turned to him, fully back to the Natasha Romanoff he had to face the entire time.

"The information you have given me... it is a bit too much compared to what you asked me to do." Her eyes had become much sharper. "What else do you want from me?"

This was the reason John liked her and played along with her over-the-top approach. And it was also the reason he wanted to establish a strong partnership with her.

"I am sure you already know." He smiled.

Natasha almost let out an exasperated sigh. He was throwing her moves back at her. But she couldn’t be mad because he did it well.

After sifting through all the conversation she had with John, all the questions he had asked yet, the information he had, and then at last she looked at questions that weren’t answered. She started to narrow down the scope.

And given his link to John Doe and ranking the questions based on importance, there was a clear standout.

’So, it’s about why SHIELD is looking into John Doe, huh?’ But the real question was why would he want to know about this?

Did he have some agenda against his employer, or was he doing this because John Doe asked him to?

At the end, she was left with more questions than answers. She had to admit that he played her well this time.

Because of that, there was no need to play more games.

"I can’t tell you for certain why, but I can give you the incident that caused it." Natasha continued, taking his hand out of her skirt, placing it on his knees. "Recently, Fury visited a comatose patient that Spiderwoman had saved. It was a mutant-related crime, and the patient’s mind was damaged severely. Fury called in a favour with someone, and that person requested SHIELD to look into John Doe."

"Can I get a name?"

"And what will you do after getting the name?" Natasha studied his face. But there were no hints of what he planned to do after knowing the name.

"Nothing, just wanna know." John only wanted to know who sent SHIELD after him; it was just to sate his own curiosity at this point.

Because who would try to send an intelligence agency after an online writer? Still, it felt like the Black Widow was reading too much into the situation.

Her gaze was fixed on him, still trying to figure out his intentions. John Doe could very well kill the person in question, or plot something else. And even if Natasha was a bit too deeply entangled to turn back now, this was information she didn’t have.

"I only heard that Fury had contacted someone; I have no idea who it is." Natasha had heard Agent Coulson being the one to handle the job, and since then, SHIELD had started tracking down John Doe.

However, it was John’s reaction that got to her. There wasn’t anything of what she had expected, just plain acceptance. He didn’t even try to dig in or ask her more questions.

In that moment, he pieced together the information given to him to form a web.

A Mutant-related crime victim. In a coma. A strong enough connection with Fury to make him call in a favour. And since it was mental damage, the chances of it being a telepath were rock solid.

Now, who were the telepaths that Fury could call for a favour?

There were plenty of telepaths in Marvel, but only one that could help the victim in this case while being nosy and selfless enough to ask such a thing of SHIELD.

’Charles Xavier?’
