Marvel: I Am The Lord of the Shadow Dimension
Chapter 34: Chapter 34: Final WishesSix months later.
On a random night, Luke was directing a squad of Shadow Ninjas to surround a neon-lit nightclub when his phone suddenly buzzed.
Checking the caller ID, he saw it was Pepper Potts. He lazily waved a hand, signaling the ninjas to initiate the assault, while he stepped back into the shadows to take the call.
"Hey, Pepper. Long time no see."
"Hey, Luke! It's been a while. Where are you traveling right now?"
Luke glanced at the nightclub a block away, which was suddenly erupting into chaotic gunfire and screaming. "A... uh... a bar?"
"Oh, okay. I hope I'm not interrupting anything."
"Not at all. What's up?"
Luke was genuinely curious. Six months ago, he had told Tony he was going on a long road trip. Since then, he had been traveling across the entire United States, earning a massive fortune by wiping out vampire nests.
While experiencing the local culture and acting as a nationwide exterminator, Luke had also officially launched his 'influencer' career. He frequently posted high-quality photos of exotic foods, beautiful landscapes, and exclusive tourist spots on his blog, amassing a significant following. Some brands had even reached out to him for sponsorships.
With both his main job (vampire hunting) and side hustle (blogging) booming, Luke was in a fantastic mood. The only downside was that he had completely mined out all of his available micro-dimensions. Kamar-Taj's spatial observation capabilities were too weak to locate new ones, meaning his passive energy income had completely halted. His shadow army was currently hard-capped at 40 elite strike squads, and he hadn't experienced the joy of a [Stat Enhancement] in a long time.
Briefly reflecting on the past six months, Luke refocused on Pepper's call.
Pepper was silent for a moment before speaking in a low, worried voice. "Luke, I think you need to come back and check on Tony. He's acting incredibly strange lately. He refuses to manage any company affairs and just locks himself in his lab all day. He even donated his entire private art collection to a children's charity... It's like..."
"Like he's a completely different person?" Luke finished for her.
'So the Iron Man 2 plotline is finally starting!' Luke thought excitedly. He had been waiting forever. He initially thought the sequel's events would kick off just weeks after the first movie, but it turned out there was a six-month time skip.
"I'll come back and check on him immediately. Don't worry," Luke promised.
Suddenly, a massive explosion rocked the street. A brilliant pillar of fire erupted from the nightclub's roof.
"Oh my god! Luke, was that an explosion on your end?!" Pepper gasped in shock.
"Uh, no, nothing like that! I'm just at a... beach party! Some crazy guy just lit off a massive, super-sized firework!"
"Really?" Pepper sounded highly suspicious. "But you just said you were at a bar."
"I am! It's a beachside bar! They use these massive fireworks shows to attract tourists!" Luke lied smoothly, glancing over the battlefield. A large group of heavily armed vampires had survived the initial breach and were currently unloading automatic weapons at his ninjas.
"Are you sure? Because those popping noises sound an awful lot like... gunfire."
"You're hearing things, Pep! I guarantee you, this is just a really intense, rapid-fire fireworks display. Honestly, it's so beautiful I think I'm gonna run out of memory on my camera."
Luke casually summoned another wave of Shadow Ninjas and ordered them to flank the surviving vampires.
"Well... it must be an incredible show if they're launching that many," Pepper said, listening to the relentless, rhythmic tat-tat-tat echoing through the phone. She wondered what kind of weird, aggressive fireworks sounded exactly like assault rifles. Maybe it was a local novelty?
"Oh, it's a breathtaking show. The crowd is absolutely dying over it!" Luke chuckled, watching a ninja smoothly run a katana straight through a vampire's heart. The creature instantly turned to ash.
As the gunfire finally died down, Luke noticed Coulson jogging over, waving frantically.
"Listen, Pep, I gotta go. I'm heading back to see Tony right now. I'll take a few pictures of the finale for you!"
Without waiting for her reply, Luke hung up and casually hopped off the three-story roof, landing lightly on his feet. For someone with 16x human constitution, the drop was nothing.
Coulson looked around the utterly devastated, cratered nightclub, rubbing his temples in exhaustion. "You know, this is getting a little out of hand. I'm going to need some time to sweep this under the rug and handle the local authorities. Do you mind taking a break from hunting for a while?"
Luke nodded. He admitted he had gone a little overboard this time. "Alright, fine. Just remember to wire the bounty to my account."
It was perfect timing anyway. The plot was starting, and he needed to head back to Malibu to check on Tony.
Watching Luke disappear into the shadows, Coulson let out a massive sigh of relief. He had just received direct orders from Director Fury to forcibly halt Luke's crusade. Over the past six months, Luke had single-handedly exterminated the entire vampire population in sixteen major US cities.
He hadn't just killed the grunts; he had assassinated nearly fifty high-ranking Vampire Elders and Elites.
The global Vampire Council was panicking. They had officially filed a furious protest with the World Security Council, threatening open, apocalyptic war if the slaughter didn't stop immediately.
Coulson had been worried about how to convince the unstoppable killing machine to stand down. He had been tailing Luke across the entire country for six months, acting as a glorified janitor and babysitter.
After witnessing Luke's sheer destructive output during his crusade, S.H.I.E.L.D. had completely rewritten his threat assessment file. The old data had been run through a shredder. Fury had personally ordered Coulson to stick to Luke like glue and ensure he remained "under control."
Coulson had no idea how Fury expected him to control a guy who could summon armies out of thin air, but thankfully, Luke had agreed to take a break on his own. Coulson quickly texted Fury, confirming the ceasefire, before turning around to manage the cleanup crews. If the media got wind of this bloodbath, it would be a nightmare.
Back at the Triskelion, Fury read the text and nodded. He pressed a button on his desk, and a holographic projection of a shadowy, cloaked figure appeared in his office.
"You want a ceasefire, correct?" Fury asked the Vampire Elder, his voice cold and uncompromising.
The hologram remained silent for a long moment before slowly nodding.
"Then get your remaining covens out of this country," Fury demanded. "That is my final condition. Otherwise, I cannot guarantee I can 'command' a freelance, private hunter to stop." 1
The Vampire Elder clenched its fists in fury. For the past six months, S.H.I.E.L.D. agents had been following that maniac around, literally cleaning up his crime scenes! And now Fury was claiming the hunter wasn't officially affiliated with them?! Bullshit!
But the Elder had no choice. The hunter was simply too powerful, and his army was seemingly infinite. If this continued, the hunter would eventually track down the Council itself. Using the threat of war was the only leverage the vampires had to force the bald Director to leash his attack dog.
Meanwhile, in Malibu.
Pepper looked at her phone, shaking her head helplessly. Gathering her composure, she picked up a massive stack of legal documents and headed downstairs to the workshop to find Tony.
A few minutes after she left, a shadowy portal quietly opened in the corner of the garage.
"Security footage deleted. Good evening, Mr. Luke. It has been a while." JARVIS's crisp voice echoed from the ceiling speakers.
Luke gave the nearest security camera a thumbs-up. "JARVIS! You're getting smarter! You even know how to greet people now."
The camera swiveled to track him. "Mr. Stark recently installed a new linguistic and emotional processing module into my core matrix. All credit belongs to him."
"I'll be sure to tell him you're sucking up," Luke laughed, walking down the stairs into the main workshop. He immediately spotted Tony and Pepper popping open a bottle of champagne.
Knocking loudly on the thick soundproof glass, Luke shouted, "Am I interrupting something?!"
The glass completely muffled his voice, but the sudden knocking successfully grabbed their attention.
Tony hit a button to open the glass doors. "Your timing is terrible," he grumbled, though a small smile tugged at his lips. He wasn't stupid enough to complain before Luke was actually inside.
"My bad. But celebrating without me is just rude," Luke walked in, but immediately pinched his nose and backed away. "Good lord, Tony! What the hell are you drinking? It smells like a swamp!"
"Is it that obvious?" Tony glanced at Pepper.
Pepper nodded emphatically, covering her own nose.
"Fine. It's liquid chlorophyll. I'm drinking it to supplement some... nutritional deficiencies I've been having recently. I highly recommend it. Builds character and strengthens the body," Tony lied smoothly, hoping nobody would dig deeper.
"I've never heard of swamp water building character," Luke said, his voice muffled behind his hand. 1
"Oh, come on, it's not that bad!" Tony walked toward him, holding the green sludge out.
"Stay back! Do not bring that biohazard near me! I don't know how Pepper tolerates it!" Luke backpedaled frantically.
The two grown men ended up playfully chasing each other around the garage, while Pepper watched them with an exasperated smile, shaking her head at their combined mental age of ten.
Pepper eventually excused herself and headed upstairs. Tony had just officially transferred the CEO position of Stark Industries to her, and she had thousands of backlogged executive decisions to finalize, along with all the legal transition paperwork.
Once she was gone, the playful atmosphere in the workshop evaporated. Luke and Tony stood in silence, looking at each other.
"You know, you hovering over me is making me feel a little threatened. Given that your physical constitution is several times higher than mine," Tony said, breaking the silence.
"Sixteen times, actually. And considering some people just lock themselves in their basement all day, that gap is probably widening," Luke said, crossing his arms. He scanned the room and quickly spotted the heavy-duty juicer in the corner, stained green. "But don't worry, my preferences strictly align with women. I'm not interested in guys who drink mystery sludge."
"While I'm thrilled to hear I'm safe, I must correct you. I've actually been working out recently. I even built a fully equipped home gym upstairs," Tony replied, maintaining a perfectly composed facade.
Noticing Luke's eyes lingering on the juicer, Tony quickly changed the subject. "So, where have you been? You really went off the grid for a while."
"I was on a road trip. Did a little freelance extermination work on the side," Luke said seriously. "I've been purging the country of hidden vampires."
"Right, right," Tony nodded, entirely unconvinced. "I remember you're a 'security consultant' for that alphabet agency. Let me guess, you were taking down some corrupt Wall Street 'vampires' sucking the taxpayers dry? Very noble of you..."
"I mean literal vampires, Tony. The undead, blood-sucking kind. Don't tell me you haven't noticed."
Tony stared at Luke's serious expression, then quickly looked away, suddenly feeling guilty. Over the past six months, JARVIS had been discreetly tracking Luke's movements via satellite and local police chatter. Tony had indeed noticed the bizarre, bloodless massacres and the ash piles left behind, eventually piecing together the existence of the supernatural creatures.
"Uh, fine. Yes, I caught wind of it. But shouldn't that be highly classified S.H.I.E.L.D. information? Are you sure you should be telling me this?"
"Tony," Luke's voice grew stern. "I don't lie to my friends. And I expect my friends not to lie to me."
He stepped closer. "What the hell is happening to your body?"
Tony looked at Luke for a long moment. Knowing he couldn't hide it any longer, he sighed heavily and unbuttoned his shirt.
"That is disgusting," Luke winced, looking at the glowing blue Arc Reactor embedded in Tony's chest, surrounded by a horrifying, creeping web of toxic purple veins.
Seeing Tony's face pale with embarrassment and exhaustion, Luke stepped forward and placed his hand directly over the reactor. He gently channeled a thin stream of pure dark energy into Tony's body.
While Luke's dark energy couldn't actively heal living tissue, it possessed the unique property of violently annihilating and consuming other forms of energy and foreign matter.
Tony felt a strange, chilling sensation spreading through his chest, but he trusted Luke and remained perfectly still.
A few moments later, Luke withdrew his hand. Tony looked down and gasped.
"Man, that's the first time I've ever had a guy inside me, and the Yelp review is going to be terrible!" Tony joked, rubbing his chest. He felt lighter, the crushing fatigue lifting slightly.
"Wait... what did you do?" Tony looked in the mirror. The horrifying purple veins radiating from the reactor had completely vanished.
"My god. You cured me! If I had known you could do that, I would have told you months ago!" Tony laughed in sheer relief.
Luke shook his head sadly. "I didn't cure you, Tony. I just manually purged the accumulated heavy metal toxins from your bloodstream. As long as that palladium core is sitting in your chest, the poison will keep leaking into your body."
Tony's laughter died instantly. He wasn't a fool; the initial euphoria had blinded him, but he quickly realized the fundamental problem hadn't been solved.
"Well, I guess I'll just have to book a weekly dark magic spa appointment with you then," Tony shrugged, buttoning his shirt back up.
Luke wasn't going to let him accept his fate that easily. "I've severely pissed off a global council of ancient vampires, Tony. I can't guarantee I'm going to survive their retaliation. You need to cure yourself permanently so you can build some new armor and watch my back."
"So you're here begging for backup?" Tony raised an eyebrow.
"Exactly. I'm here to beg the greatest genius in history, Tony Stark, for help," Luke said sincerely.
"My god, you're actually complimenting me!" Tony dramatically clutched his chest. "JARVIS, ensure this audio is backed up to the secure cloud. I need to listen to this when I'm feeling down."
"You can gloat later. Do you seriously not have a permanent solution for this?" Luke asked.
Tony fell silent. The arrogant billionaire facade cracked, revealing the exhausted, dying man underneath.
"I've synthesized and tested every single known element on the periodic table," Tony admitted quietly. "None of them can replace the palladium core without immediately burning out or killing me."
Looking at Tony's depressed expression, Luke thought for a moment.
"Don't give up yet. You're the smartest man alive. Maybe you just need to get out of the lab and clear your head. Isaac Newton discovered gravity because an apple fell on his head. You might just be missing a spark of inspiration. Who knows, maybe getting hit by a random object will trigger an epiphany."
Seeing Tony remain stubbornly still, Luke pushed harder. "At the very least, you should go out and complete your bucket list. That way, if you do die, you won't have any regrets, right?"
Tony looked up, meeting Luke's eyes. A reckless, manic glint slowly returned to his gaze.
"Fine. You convinced me. But you aren't running off this time. If I'm going out, I'm going out with a bang, and you're coming with me to check off my bucket list."
