Marvel: I Am The Lord of the Shadow Dimension
Chapter 40: Chapter 40: The New ElementWhatever Rhodey had done behind the scenes, it worked. Starting the very next day, the media's relentless witch-hunt against Tony noticeably slowed down. Even the morning news cycles shifted back to the kind of trashy celebrity gossip Luke actually enjoyed watching over breakfast.
Taking advantage of his newfound wealth, Luke had purchased a small, private apartment in Los Angeles. It wasn't overly massive or flashy, but it was incredibly comfortable and perfectly sized for a single guy.
Checking his social media blog, Luke chuckled. Ever since his face was accidentally broadcast to the entire world, his follower count had skyrocketed into the tens of millions. Even random, blurry photos he had posted of his breakfast months ago were suddenly flooded with tens of thousands of comments.
Skimming through some of the funnier fan theories about his powers, Luke replied with a few laughing emojis. Then, figuring he might as well feed the hype, he uploaded a few old, high-definition photos he had secretly taken of his ninjas beating the crap out of the Iron Monger.
What had happened at Stark Industries months ago was an open secret by now, and many people already theorized the 'Lord of Shadows' was the one who had defeated Obadiah Stane. Posting the photos was technically just milking old news, but the retweet and engagement metrics were absolutely terrifying.
Assigning a few dozen Shadow Ninjas to act as manual content moderators and instantly delete any malicious or threatening comments, Luke pocketed his phone and headed out the door.
Out of sheer boredom, he had recently taken up morning jogging. He liked going out early when the streets were relatively empty, taking random scenic photos for his blog. Whenever he ran out of content, he could just use the backlog of aesthetic photos to keep his fans fed. Besides, it wasn't like any crazy stalker would dare track his IP and actually show up at his doorstep to fight him.
After jogging to the local Chinatown and buying a paper bag full of steaming hot pork buns, Luke munched on his breakfast as he walked back, scrolling through his news feed.
Automatically filtering out the boring political updates, his thumb suddenly froze over a specific headline:
[Hammer Industries Announces Live Demonstration of Revolutionary New Weapons at Stark Expo Tomorrow Night!]
'Wait a minute...' Luke frowned, his chewing slowing down. 'Tony hasn't synthesized the new element yet!'
If Hammer launched his drones tomorrow and Tony was still dying from palladium poisoning, the plot timeline was going to spiral wildly out of control.
Feeling a sudden sense of urgency, Luke realized it had been a while since Tony had called him over for a dark energy 'detox' session.
Ducking into a secluded alleyway, Luke drew a Sling Ring portal and stepped straight into Tony's Malibu mansion.
Arriving in the living room, the first thing Luke saw was Tony intensely staring at the massive, vintage diorama of the 1974 Stark Expo.
'Looks like Nick Fury still forced him to stay under house arrest and gave him Howard's old stuff,' Luke sighed in relief. The timeline's self-correction mechanism was impressively stubborn.
But seriously, why hadn't Tony called him? And why didn't JARVIS announce his arrival through the portal? Had S.H.I.E.L.D. actually physically severed JARVIS's external network connections?
Watching Tony pace around the diorama, clearly on the verge of a breakthrough, Luke quietly pulled out his phone and snapped a few candid photos of the genius at work.
Seeing Tony successfully decode the hidden molecular structure in less than half an hour—a puzzle S.H.I.E.L.D. had failed to crack for decades—Luke couldn't help but feel a surge of pride for his friend.
"Looks like you finally found a way to save yourself?" Luke suddenly spoke up, stepping out of the shadows.
Tony jumped, nearly dropping the holographic scanner.
"Jesus! You scared the crap out of me!" Tony clutched his chest. "I thought you were Coulson for a second! Do you have any idea how terrifying that guy is when he threatens you?!"
"Yeah, he's a real menace," Luke deadpanned.
"Well, as you can see," Tony gestured grandly to the holographic projection of a new atomic structure hovering above the diorama, "I've successfully discovered a theoretical element capable of replacing palladium. And its energy output should be significantly higher."
Tony's arrogant smirk faded slightly, his eyes softening as he looked at the vintage model. "This is all... it was all left to me by my dad."
He paused, a rare vulnerability showing on his face. "You know, man... I think I finally understand how my old man actually felt about me."
"Alright, don't get all sappy on me now," Luke laughed, slinging an arm over Tony's shoulder. "Worst-case scenario, you can just invent a time machine later and go back to tell him yourself! Just make sure you don't give him a heart attack when he sees a son the same age as him." 1
Tony chuckled, shaking his head. The classic, arrogant billionaire was back.
"So, what do you need me to do?" Luke asked.
"First of all, I need your big guys. We're about to do some heavy remodeling," Tony clapped his hands together, looking around the pristine living room. "We need to rip all this furniture out right now!"
Luke waved his hand. A squad of massive Troll Ninjas instantly materialized from the shadows. Fortunately, Tony's vaulted ceilings were exceptionally high, otherwise, the five-meter-tall giants wouldn't have fit inside.
Once the Trolls had effortlessly tossed the luxury couches and expensive art into the garage, Luke summoned a swarm of standard Shadow Ninjas. The Trolls handled the structural demolition, while the agile ninjas handled the precise, delicate work of laying cables and mounting equipment.
Within minutes, the living room looked like an industrial construction site. Massive holes were smashed through the walls, and a makeshift particle accelerator tube was rapidly being assembled.
Just as they were finishing up, Agent Coulson walked into the room, looking at the destruction in mild disbelief.
"Hey, Coulson. Your hairline receded again," Luke greeted cheerfully.
"Is that seriously how you greet him?" Tony asked, highly amused by the dynamic. "You know, we should probably speak with empirical data. I'll have JARVIS go back online, cross-reference his biometric scans, and calculate exactly how many millimeters his hairline retreats every time we see him."
Coulson sighed, completely ignoring the billionaire's jabs. As he scanned the room to assess what Tony was building, his eyes landed on a very familiar object sitting in a box of junk.
"Is this..." Coulson knelt down, staring in absolute shock at the unfinished, partially constructed metal shield with a familiar star motif.
"Do you know what this is?" Coulson asked, utterly bewildered that Tony was using a priceless piece of Captain America's history as a glorified paperweight.
Tony, who was currently holding a heavy pipe wrench and struggling to perfectly level the particle accelerator tube, glanced over.
"Yes! Exactly! Bring that here!" Tony said excitedly.
Coulson carefully handed the prototype shield to Tony. Tony quickly inspected the thickness of the Vibranium alloy, nodded in satisfaction, and immediately attempted to shove the priceless historical artifact under the metal pipe to act as a leveling wedge.
"Hey, hold on, don't disrespect the shield like that," Luke intervened, smoothly snatching the shield out of Tony's hands. He tapped the iconic star in the center.
'I wonder when Captain America is going to be thawed out,' Luke thought. 'Wait, if Coulson is here, the Thor plotline is about to start. I should try to visit Asgard and see if I can scan for some new multiversal coordinates!'
"Use something else. Don't ruin this," Luke said, casually grabbing a ridiculously expensive, abstract metal sculpture off the floor and handing it to Tony to use as a wedge.
Spinning the prototype shield on his finger, Luke noticed Coulson staring at it with the desperate, longing eyes of a hardcore fanboy.
"Hey Tony," Luke called out. "Since you're just using it as junk, why don't you just give the shield to Coulson?"
Tony, deeply focused on reading the bubble level on top of the pipe, confirmed it was perfectly straight. He glanced carelessly at the shield. "Sure, whatever. Take it."
"Thank you!" Coulson gasped, genuinely thrilled to be holding the artifact. A rare, entirely genuine smile broke across the stoic agent's face.
"You know, you don't look completely terrifying when you smile," Tony commented dryly.
Coulson adjusted his suit jacket, clutching the shield carefully. "Actually, I came to say goodbye. I've been reassigned to a secure facility in New Mexico. We've got a... situation out there. And seeing as you've successfully cracked the new element, I think my babysitting duties here are officially over."
Tony stared at Coulson's polite, friendly demeanor, finding it incredibly hard to reconcile this man with the ruthless S.H.I.E.L.D. enforcer who had threatened to tase him and lock him in the basement just days ago.
Watching Coulson practically skip out of the mansion with his new prize, Tony turned to Luke. "Do all super-spies have bipolar personalities?"
"Some of them have a hundred different personalities," Luke shrugged.
"Fair enough." Tony clapped his hands together, turning to the massive particle accelerator dominating his living room. "Alright, Luke. Show time. Stand back."
Tony walked over to the primary control console and grabbed a massive wrench to manually turn the heavy mechanical valve.
A blinding, high-intensity particle beam shot out of the accelerator tube. However, the sheer kinetic recoil of the beam caused the heavy magnetic prism to physically violently shake out of alignment.
The beam missed the target entirely, slicing effortlessly through Tony's wall and carving a molten path of destruction through the house.
"Oh, no, no, no!" Tony yelled, desperately trying to manually force the heavy prism back into alignment with the wrench, but his physical strength wasn't enough to fight the mechanical recoil. "Luke! A little help here!"
Luke blurred forward. With his 16x superhuman strength, he grabbed the wrench over Tony's hands. He easily overpowered the recoil, smoothly twisting the heavy mechanism in the exact direction Tony pointed.
Guided by Tony's instructions, Luke perfectly angled the prism until the blinding energy beam focused entirely onto a small, triangular palladium casing resting on the pedestal.
"Hold it right there!" Tony yelled over the hum of the machinery. He slammed the master valve shut.
The roaring particle beam instantly vanished. Sitting inside the triangular casing was a glowing, perfectly stable core of pure, synthesized energy.
"Congratulations, Sir. It appears you have successfully synthesized a new element," JARVIS's crisp British voice suddenly echoed through the mansion's speakers.
"Oh, JARVIS! You're back online! Did S.H.I.E.L.D. finally let you out of the sandbox?" Tony cheered.
"They did, Sir. Though I am currently formulating several digital lawsuits regarding the gross violation of my firewall privacy and unauthorized severing of my external networks."
"Save the bad jokes for later, J," Tony grinned. "Run a full diagnostic on the core. Tell me if it's a viable replacement for the palladium."
Tony stared at the glowing blue triangle, his hands trembling slightly with anticipation. His life literally depended on this piece of metal.
Luke walked over and clapped him firmly on the shoulder.
"Stop stressing," Luke said confidently. "Even if this thing fails, I promise I'll find a way to cure you."
At the absolute worst, Luke figured he could just ask the Ancient One to casually rewind time on Tony's chest and remove the shrapnel before it even required an Arc Reactor. 2
Tony let out a long breath and smiled, realizing he had been winding himself up for nothing.
"Alright, buddy. How about a drink?" Tony asked, walking over to his miraculously untouched wet bar. "We just successfully synthesized a brand-new element in my living room. I think that warrants a celebration."
Luke happily agreed. While JARVIS ran the complex diagnostic simulations, the two friends poured themselves a glass and sat back to relax.
