Bang.

Steve took a deep breath and kicked the door open.

"Captain, you’re awake?"

Seeing Steve walk out, Sharon was a little surprised, and even forgot the script she had just been told to follow.

"What did you do to Peggy?"

Looking at the woman before him, whose outfit resembled Peggy’s but who was clearly not her, Steve felt rage surge toward his head. Was it not obvious? They had prepared this fake to deceive him after he had been brainwashed.

"Captain, your emotions seem a little unstable. Do you need a sedative?"

Several S.H.I.E.L.D. agents in specially made black suits walked over. Looking at these people in unfamiliar clothing, Steve immediately understood. These people were Hydra.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

After knocking several of them away, Steve charged straight out. As he left, he glanced back and realized that the place he had just been staying in was actually a shipping container, not a real room at all. The feeling of being toyed with like a pet made the unease and fear in Steve’s heart grow even stronger.

After circling around the "Hydra" agents on the third floor for quite some time, Steve finally realized that the button beside the wall could open the elevator. He glanced left and right, saw no one nearby, and hurriedly pressed it.

"Captain?"

At that moment, the people standing inside the elevator were Orion Cross, Natasha, and a group of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents.

"Yes."

Steve was about to attack, but suddenly remembered what "Judith" had told him and immediately suppressed himself. The people in the elevator should not know that his brainwashing had failed. If he pretended he had already been brainwashed, would he be able to fool them? Since Hydra had already taken control of everything, brute force was not the wise choice. He believed there had to still be resistance organizations outside. He had to escape.

"Captain, are you all right? Your emotions seem a little unstable. I’ll call the medical department."

Orion Cross looked at the panicked Steve and put his hand into his pocket, preparing to take out his phone.

"Don’t worry."

Steve grabbed Orion Cross’s arm and took a deep breath. "Hail Hydra."

"Avengers assemble."

Orion Cross responded to Captain America’s slogan.

Steve: "?"

Then, while Steve was still confused about what the Avengers were, all the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents in the elevator pounced on him, tightly locking down his limbs. Some even took out electric batons. Seeing Captain America being pinned down by a bunch of men in such a forceful and humiliating way, Natasha leaned against the side of the elevator, trembling as she desperately held back her laughter.

Ding.

The elevator reached the first floor. Steve’s face flushed red as he forcefully threw off the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents on his body, burst through the door, and rushed out.

"Hiss. The Captain really is amazing. Does this count as a work injury?"

Several agents sucked in sharp breaths as they climbed up from the floor.

"What now?"

Natasha looked at Orion Cross and asked.

"Follow him."

Steve ran aimlessly through the city. Looking at everything unfamiliar around him, the terror in his heart grew stronger and stronger. Only the Tesseract studied by Hydra could have transformed the world into something completely different in such a short time.

"Hulk!"

"Stop him! Open fire!"

At the end of a street, Steve heard the sound of gunfire and gradually slowed his steps.

"Hulk!"

A giant green monster fell from the sky and crashed down in front of Steve.

Looking at the Hulk, Steve remembered what "Judith" had told him. Hydra had tested their homemade Super Soldier Serum on Peggy Carter and turned her into a green monster... Could this be her?

"Peggy..."

Steve bit his lower lip and reached out with trembling hands toward Hulk’s head, his eyes filled with deep emotion.

Hulk: "?"

Being stared at so affectionately by a strange man and having his head touched made Hulk feel goosebumps all over his body.

"Hulk!"

The Hulk roared, grabbed Steve by the foot, smashed him into the ground twice, and hurled him away.

Steve crashed into a wall and felt as if his whole body had fallen apart. Hulk glanced back at the army chasing him, ignored Steve, and leaped into the distance.

"Peggy really turned into a monster and lost all her memories."

Steve lay in the pile of trash at the foot of the wall, staring blankly at the sky.

"Steve Rogers."

A pair of feet suddenly appeared in Steve’s vision. The slightly familiar voice made him raise his head. "You’re... the Hydra agent from earlier?"

"Looks like you weren’t brainwashed. A blessing in misfortune."

Orion Cross crouched down and spoke.

"You’re not Hydra?"

Steve immediately reacted. No wonder when he said "Hail Hydra" earlier, he was beaten instead. It turned out that the person in front of him was very likely a spy within Hydra.

"I am the Prophet."

"The Prophet?"

Steve froze slightly. Was that a title for a member of that Avengers organization?

"I’m here to tell you the truth, Steve," Orion Cross said expressionlessly.

"The truth? I already know it."

Steve gave a bitter smile and spoke.

"No. What you know is only an illusion. If you think back carefully, you’ll discover many abnormalities."

"Abnormalities... There do seem to be some."

Steve thought back. Although he did not discover anything specific, he did indeed feel that something was wrong somewhere. Then he raised his head and looked at Orion Cross. "What is this so-called truth?"

"This world is fabricated."

"What?"

Steve froze, not understanding what Orion Cross meant.

"This world is a virtual world. Hydra connected to your brain and guided your consciousness into this virtual world."

"Their goal is to use this virtual world to simulate what effect you will have on the world after waking up, and whether you pose a threat to their rule."

"It isn’t just you. Every baby born in the world spends ten years inside a virtual pod filled with nutrient fluid, experiencing a virtual life."

Orion Cross narrated expressionlessly.

"Then the real world..."

"Isn’t very different from the virtual world, except there aren’t so many smiling pedestrians on the streets."

"No wonder..."

Steve fell silent. He remembered what had felt wrong. If the world had been ruled by Hydra, why were the pedestrians on the streets still laughing and talking? But if this was a simulated, fabricated world, then it made sense.

"Then who are you?"

Steve looked at Orion Cross with empty eyes and asked.

"I am the Prophet, a program bug. I’ll give you two choices."

Orion Cross took two strange pills out of his pocket. "The blue pill will let you spend your life in the virtual world. I’ll give you a portion of authority. You can become the new leader, and you can also turn Peggy back into a human."

"Heh! I understand."

Before Orion Cross could finish speaking, Steve gave a bitter smile, snatched the red pill, and swallowed it in one gulp.

"The red pill is strawberry-flavored."
