Chapter 157: Chapter 157: Trapped
Hearing Emma’s conclusion, Redqueen replied,
"That is the most likely explanation."
Emma looked toward the soldiers surrounding the building.
"...I just hope she isn’t hurt, fighting him alone."
Not wanting anyone to notice her, Emma transformed into Ghostfreak. She silently floated through the walls and entered the damaged detention block.
Colonel Phillips, Peggy Carter, Howard Stark, Dr. Erskine, and several officers were still discussing what had happened near the detention cell. The room had been completely destroyed. Part of the walls had collapsed, and debris was scattered everywhere.
"Search every inch of this camp!" Colonel Phillips ordered.
"Yes, sir!"
Peggy frowned as she looked at the destroyed cell.
"There wasn’t enough time for Mercer to escape on foot."
"We had soldiers surrounding the building within seconds."
"Then where did they go?"
Howard rubbed the back of his neck, still trying to process everything.
"I don’t know... but I saw it with my own eyes. Something attacked those men. One moment one of them was charging at me... the next he was blasted across the room by something I couldn’t even see." He paused. "And whatever it was, it saved my life."
Before anyone could reply, an officer hurried inside.
"Colonel! We just received a report from the western area!"
Colonel Phillips looked at him.
"Report."
"The fire suddenly stopped on its own, sir. The attacker is gone. We’ve searched the area, but there’s no sign of him."
Colonel Phillips frowned.
"Continue searching. I don’t care if it’s the camp or the forest. Find me anything, footprints, weapons, blood, anything that can tell us who attacked us."
"Yes, sir!"
The officer saluted before hurrying away.
Colonel Phillips folded his arms.
"Those men ignored bullets, possessed tremendous strength, and now we’ve got an invisible fighter powerful enough to throw them around."
He looked toward the destroyed detention cell.
"...Were they all some kind of super soldiers?"
The room fell silent.
Meanwhile, inside the temporary pocket space Morgan had created using Emma’s gadget...
The endless white space stretched in every direction. Floating in the middle of it was a massive fighting arena built in the style of ancient Roman architecture, roughly the size of two football fields. Beyond the arena was nothing but an endless white void.
Morgan hovered high above the arena, using her aerial advantage to rain down attacks on the two black-armored men.
BOOM! BOOM!
Nearly ten minutes of fighting had left the arena covered in cracks and craters. The two black-armored men were already covered in damage, barely able to keep up with Morgan’s relentless assault, while Mercer desperately rolled across the stone floor to avoid the explosions.
Hidden beneath his sleeve, Mercer repeatedly pressed a small device strapped to his wrist.
"Come on... work! Teleport me! Come on!" Mercer shouted frantically.
The device remained silent.
Morgan smiled.
So I was right. That really was a teleportation device.
She looked down at Mercer.
Good thing I activated the dimensional gadget the moment I saw him reaching for that device back in the detention cell. Otherwise, he would’ve escaped already.
Her eyes shifted toward the two black-armored men. Their armor had been heavily damaged under her relentless attacks, revealing patches of green scales beneath the broken metal.
Lizard hybrids... so that’s what they are.
And now I finally know how they got into the storage room without Friday’s nanobots detecting them. They didn’t sneak inside... they teleported directly into the room.
Under Morgan’s relentless assault, the two black-armored men finally reached their limits.
BOOM!
One was blasted across the arena before crashing into a stone wall. Before he could stand again, another repulsor blast struck him.
BOOM!
He finally collapsed unconscious.
The remaining black-armored man lasted only a few more exchanges before Morgan knocked him to the ground with a heavy punch.
BANG!
He never got back up.
Now... only Mercer remained.
Seeing Iron Man’s palm begin to glow and point directly at him, Mercer immediately raised both hands.
"I surrender! I surrender!" he shouted. "Hey... how did you find me? You shouldn’t have been able to know which era I traveled to."
While speaking, Mercer secretly kept trying to activate the teleport device.
"Find you?" Morgan replied coldly. "It seems you don’t know. That day, it wasn’t just you who came to this era. Everyone near the time machine was dragged here with you."
Mercer froze.
"So that’s it..." he murmured. "It wasn’t that my item failed... you all came here with me."
"What item are you talking about?" Morgan asked.
Mercer remained silent.
"Are you going to answer me or not?"
Morgan’s palm glowed once more.
Mercer immediately shook his head.
"Item? What item? You must’ve heard me wrong." He deliberately tried to change the subject. "Don’t you want the time machine so you can return to your own era? If you attack me, I’ll never tell you where I hid it."
Morgan frowned.
He’s trying to buy time.
There was still enough time before the dimensional space collapsed. Morgan opened Emma’s storage bracelet and took out a small vial.
Before Mercer could react, Morgan disappeared.
BANG!
Her punch sent Mercer stumbling backward as the teleport device flew from his hand. Morgan caught it before it hit the ground.
Then she grabbed Mercer by the jaw and poured the liquid into his mouth.
Mercer’s eyes widened.
"What is that?! Poison?! What did you do?! I surrendered!"
He desperately tried to spit it out...
But it was already too late.
