Chapter 159: Chapter 159: The Magic Artifact
"I hid it at my hideout outside New York," Mercer said, still under the effect of the truth serum.
"Let’s go get it," Morgan said.
"Wait here," Emma said, transforming into XLR8.
She left and returned a few seconds later, carrying the Lizard hybrid she’d hidden in the forest earlier.
Seeing the hybrid, Morgan turned to Mercer.
"Hey, do you have an antidote to cure them?"
"No, I don’t have anything."
"Are these innocent people, or Hydra?" Emma asked.
"Hydra."
"Hydra? I figured, seeing how they attacked like blank puppets with no emotion. But it’ll take some time to cure them," Morgan said, thinking it over.
"Maybe this’ll work," Emma said, using her Omnitrix to scan the hybrid.
[The scanned person is affected by external DNA. Do you wish to cure it?]
Hearing that, Emma said yes.
A flash of green light covered the hybrid, and the Lizard man’s body returned to normal, every trace of the mutation disappearing.
"That actually works? I thought only your dad’s Omnitrix had that function," Morgan said, watching in surprise.
"Of course I have it too. This is just the first time I’ve had a chance to use this function," Emma replied.
Morgan released the other two hybrids from the containment gadget, and Emma cured them the same way.
"So what do we do with them now?" Emma asked, looking at the three former Lizard hybrids.
"We can leave them for the soldiers to find," Morgan said. "I’m sure they don’t know much about your identities."
She glanced at Mercer.
Mercer nodded in confirmation.
Emma carried the three unconscious men to a quiet area near the soldiers and left a note identifying them as Hydra agents. She made sure no one was nearby before quickly slipping away.
Soon, they arrived at Mercer’s hideout, a building hidden on a farm just outside New York.
"This place looks creepy at night," Emma said, looking around the dark farm through the lab window.
The lab was filled with expensive equipment and various machines. Morgan immediately started looking around while Emma searched for the magic artifact.
It didn’t take long before she found a locked cabinet.
"Found it."
Emma opened the cabinet and pulled out a small box.
Inside was a dark crown.
It looked completely ordinary, with no glow or anything that made it seem magical.
"Huh... a crown?" Emma picked it up and turned it around in her hands.
"Emma, put that down," Morgan said sharply. "Who knows what that thing can do? It could be dangerous. Don’t touch it."
"Okay, okay."
Emma quickly placed the crown back inside the box.
"Alright, mission complete," Emma said proudly. "Even with a few ups and downs, we pulled it off perfectly."
She sounded like an agent finishing a successful mission.
"Cut the act and start searching for anything useful," Morgan said, already looking at the expensive equipment around the lab. "It could come in handy later."
"I’m exhausted today. I think I’m gonna sleep for days once I finally crash," Emma muttered as they left the lab.
The main issue is that Steve suddenly starts explaining a lot about the girls, which makes the conversation feel a little staged. I’d make Peggy’s questions come naturally from what Steve is already saying, and keep the girls part short.
The next morning, a black car drove steadily down a New York street, with Steve and Peggy sitting in the back.
"Still thinking about what happened yesterday?" Peggy asked, glancing at Steve, who was staring out the window.
Steve blinked, pulled from his thoughts.
"Yeah. I just didn’t expect any of it. Mercer being Hydra, him escaping, that fire afterward..." He paused. "I heard a lot of soldiers died in that. Any news on him yet?"
"No, nothing yet. Since those attackers looked like Super Soldiers, everything about Mercer is still being kept quiet. It hasn’t gone public, and they’re still searching for him. Three more Hydra agents were found near the fire yesterday too, but they don’t seem to be in great shape mentally, so there’s still no real lead."
Peggy looked at him.
"But you don’t need to worry about that right now. Project Rebirth is what matters."
Steve nodded and looked out the window again.
After a moment, he pointed toward an alley.
"That alley... I remember getting into a fight there once."
The car continued down the street.
"And that one too. Got beaten pretty badly by some thugs."
Peggy smiled.
"You seem to remember a lot of places."
Steve chuckled.
"Hard not to."
He looked toward another street.
"That’s where I fought a bully for the last time. I met two young girls there too."
Peggy glanced at him.
"Two girls?"
"Yeah. They were smart. A little tomboyish too." Steve smiled. "We became friends."
"Sounds like you made quite an impression."
Steve shook his head with a small laugh.
"I think they made more of an impression on me."
Peggy looked at him for a moment before turning her attention back toward the window.
"And why would a beautiful woman like you join the army? I mean... become an agent," Steve said awkwardly, stumbling over his words.
Peggy raised an eyebrow.
"You really don’t know how to talk to a woman, do you?"
Steve gave an embarrassed smile.
The car continued through the city as the two of them talked.
Just then, it pulled to a stop in front of a store.
Both Steve and Peggy stepped out.
