Luke stared at the glowing interface of the Terror Shop, his finger hovered above the buy button.
[Black Smoke (Fire Force): 1550 TP]
This was the power wielded by Yuichirō Kurono - the man the world of Fire Force called the Demon of Haijima Industries, the Ashen Reaper, the Maddest.
To the people, Kurono seemed like a complete psychopath. In reality, he was just... a very dedicated employee. Luke could respect that. He was, after all, an employee himself. His job description involved streaming while doing terrorism.
Kurono’s ability was exceptionally versatile. The power allowed the user to generate and manipulate thick black smoke and ash from their own body. Kurono could control its temperature, solidify it into melee weapons, and the most impressive part was the sensory application.
The black smoke remained linked to the user’s body. By feeling the micro-vibrations within the ash cloud, the user could sense their surroundings with radar-like precision.
This makeshift danger-sense was so ridiculously overpowered in the anime that it allowed Kurono to effortlessly react to Shinra’s Rapid, one of the fastest techniques in the series before Shinra evolved it to literal faster-than-light speeds.
"Plus, I don’t think I have to worry about Tephrosis," Luke thought, a giddy smile spreading across his face.
Tephrosis was the nasty side-effect in Fire Force where overusing ignition abilities caused localized charring and permanent nerve damage to a body part. But for Luke’s quirk-possessing body, that won’t be a problem at all.
Luke’s heart paced slightly faster as he imagined how this new power would synergize with his existing arsenal.
Right now, his Explosion Quirk was sitting at 100% mastery. To push it any further, the Terror Shop was demanding a massive 500 Terror Points to break the limit. That was five times the cost of his last upgrade wall!
That was highway robbery.
His Flying Thunder God (FTG) was sitting at a comfortable 50% mastery, granting him insane reaction speeds and the ability to instantly teleport himself or anything he touched.
He knew damn well how overpowered those two abilities would become when glued together with the Black Smoke. The level of tactical versatility he’d achieve was going to be absolutely insane. A perfect blend of crowd control, stealth, mobility, and offensive power.
This skill was a must-have.
He hit the purchase button, applied the discount coupon, and watched 775 TP vanish from his account.
[Purchase Successful!]
He raised his right palm, phone still clutched in his left, and waited. He expected the kind of pain when he awakened the quirk.
He waited.
And then...
FWOOOSH!
And then... his entire right arm burst into roaring flames.
The fire instantly violently spread, engulfing his entire body in a split second. For one glorious, terrifying moment, Luke became a blazing, human inferno.
’Whoa...’ Luke thought, smiling through the flames.
The heat didn’t hurt him. Heat was his best friend.
The next moment, the flames completely vanished, as if they had never existed in the first place.
Leaving Luke standing in the middle of the dusty, abandoned mall... completely buck naked, holding nothing but a smartphone.
"Sigh," Luke exhaled, a small puff of black smoke escaping his lips along with the sound.
Other than the sudden nudity, his body looked exactly the same. No physical changes, no demonic ash marks.
Luke closed his eyes and willed the new power to activate. A puff of warm, black soot erupted from his right forearm. He tried to mentally command the smoke to take a shape, but... he couldn’t.
"Right," Luke muttered, tapping the screen of his phone to open his mastery tab.
[--Ability Mastery--]
[Explosion Quirk: 100%]
[Flying Thunder God Technique: 50%]
[Black Smoke: 1%]
Luke checked his remaining balance. He had started with 859 TP, and the discounted skill had cost him 775 TP. He currently had 84 TP left in the bank.
He checked the upgrade cost for Black Smoke.
1 TP = 1.5% mastery.
Luke blinked. "That’s... actually cheaper than the Explosion Quirk was."
He immediately dumped 16 TP into the system, bringing his Black Smoke mastery up to a respectable 25%.
"Let’s try this again," he said, rolling his bare shoulders and equipping his Terror outfit.
A really nice thing about this black suit was that it was compatible with all sorts of powers. So there was no need to expose his body to use any of his powers.
Taking a breath, he concentrated again. A thick, rolling wave of dense black ash erupted from his pores, rapidly filling the entire storage room.
He could feel it now. He could manipulate the ash, control its density, and raise or lower its temperature.
Extending his hand, he willed the soot to coalesce. The black smoke violently swirled into his palm, solidifying rapidly until he was holding a massive, pitch-black, wicked-looking scythe.
He slashed the air once, twice, then spun the scythe in a graceful arc around his body.
Luke raised a brow... the movements felt... natural. Instinctive. As if he’d been practicing with this weapon for years.
Pulling the weapon back, Luke executed a graceful, highly cinematic twirl. He leaped into the air, twisted his body, and brought the scythe down in a fluid, devastating arc aimed directly at a thick concrete support pillar.
The slash was only half-successful. The solidified ash blade bit deep into the concrete, slicing exactly halfway through the heavy pillar... before the scythe shattered.
Landing lightly on his feet, Luke nodded thoughtfully, mentally logging the results of his test drive:
Creating intricate shapes or finer details with the solidified soot was still highly difficult.
The weapons, while sharp and heavy, were relatively brittle and would break under extreme resistance.
While he could feel basic physical vibrations when his smoke swept against the walls, trying to use it as a highly precise, high-speed danger-sensing radar was still impossible. At 25%, the mental feedback was more like a fuzzy, low-resolution radar map.
"A decent start," Luke said, letting the remaining smoke dissipate. "But I definitely need to get those mastery numbers up"
He dumped another 24 TP into the system, bringing his total investment for the upgrade to 40 TP.
His Black Smoke mastery instantly spiked to a very comfortable 61%.
Immediately, a warm, refreshing sensation washed through his body. His senses expanded, and his control over the soot became incredibly sharp. He could feel every individual microscopic speck of ash floating in the room as if they were tiny nerve endings extending from his own skin.
"Round two," he said, eyeing the half-slashed concrete pillar.
Thick, pitch-black ash immediately swirled into his hand, compressing and solidifying with zero effort. The Reaper’s scythe returned, but this time it looked denser, sharper, far more detailed, and far more menacing.
Luke twirled the scythe once and then brought it down in a clean, horizontal arc.
The blade passed through the concrete pillar like a hot knife through warm butter. There was no resistance this time at all. Just a whisper-quiet hiss as the solidified ash sliced clean through, severing the massive support column in one effortless stroke.
Now it was time to test the real synergy.
With a thought, he commanded the floating ash to compress into several flat, rectangular playing cards.
Once they were solid, he applied his Flying Thunder God seals to the surface of the cards.
He tossed one across the room.
Blink.
He instantly teleported from one card to the other. It was incredibly easy. However, the FTG mark only worked as long as the solidified ash maintained its structure.
According to the system’s description of the Black Smoke skill, the soot remained directly linked to his body, which was why he could feel the micro-vibrations within the cloud. But if it was physically and spiritually linked to him...
’Can it be considered a literal extension of my body?’
The Flying Thunder God technique required him to physically touch an object or a person to teleport them. But what if his smoke touched them instead?
He immediately put the theory to the test. He eyed a piece of broken concrete pillar and willed one of his solidified black ash cards to stick firmly to it.
Standing on the other side of the room, completely hands-free, Luke focused on the card touching the concrete and willed the teleportation to trigger.
Blink.
He smiled as he saw the concrete appear on the other marked card.
It worked. He had successfully teleported an object without physically touching it!
"Behold, the current absolute pinnacle of terrorism," Luke laughed out loud. "Teleporting litter!"
But he wasn’t done experimenting...
He raised his palm and fired a very small, concentrated ball of explosive energy straight into the ash card floating in front of him.
The glowing orange orb instantly disappeared into the seal, only to violently erupt out of the second card across the room.
BANG!
This was...
This was basically a makeshift version of Flying Thunder God: Guiding Thunder.
A move created by Minato by combining the Barrier Technique and Flying Thunder God technique.
The same legendary move the Fourth Hokage, Minato Namikaze, had used to teleport and redirect Kurama’s massive Tailed Beast Bomb away from the Hidden Leaf Village!
Unknowingly, a massive, wicked grin spread across Luke’s face as the limitless, overpowered applications flooded his mind.
Feeling absolutely untouchable, he raised both of his hands, interlocking fingers together in a very strange, very specific hand sign.
"Domai.."
