"Greetings, people of Washington DC..."
Luna’s black lips curled up into a wicked, gleeful grin as she realized exactly what that smooth, distorted voice meant.
She was still standing in the middle of her bathroom, dripping wet and completely naked - but frankly, she couldn’t care less.
A minor detail like putting on a bathrobe wasn’t going to make her miss a single, precious second of HIS glorious appearance.
Scrambling out of the bathroom, she practically dove toward the large flat-screen TV mounted in her bedroom, which was hijacked by the same force that had seized every screen in America just yesterday.
There he was.
The screen showed a close-up of his face - that beautiful, white mask, those hollow black eyes, that painted grin that made the world tremble.
Luna stood before the television, her reflection ghosting across the screen. The tear marks on his mask aligned perfectly with the tear marks she had drawn on her own cheeks. His black-painted lips matched her own.
She looked like him.
Luna stepped closer to the screen, transfixed. Her breath fogged the glass. She pressed her black-stained lips against the television, leaving a dark kiss mark right over where his mask’s mouth would be.
Then she shook her head, snapping herself out of her reverie. No. She had to watch him. Pay attention. Every word he spoke was a gift.
She stepped back, grabbed the sheets from her bed, wrapped them loosely around her still-damp body, and sat down on the edge of the mattress. Her green eyes remained fixed on the screen, unblinking.
On the broadcast, Veritas stood on the rooftop terrace of a skyscraper, the bright morning sky stretching behind him in a canvas of pale blue and scattered white clouds.
After his greeting, the camera panned back slightly, revealing his tailored suit and relaxed posture. But then, his shoulders slumped slightly.
Hearing his greeting, Luna realised something: since he had greeted just Washington today, this screen hijacking was only in this city.
"Yesterday was a very tough day for me," Veritas began, placing a gloved hand over his heart. "The day extracted heavy tolls from me."
Luna nodded... it was a tough day for her as well. But there was one different thing about his broadcast today...
She could clearly hear a beautiful yet horrifying unheard melody from the background as he spoke. It was a kind of melody that made her hair stand on end...

He let out a tragic, completely unbelievable sigh.
"I lost all of my dear, sweet friends... my best friend - Batroc... all because the great Steve Rogers interrupted my perfect evening, dragging along his little team of commandos."
His voice cracked slightly on Batroc’s name. Whether the emotion was real or manufactured, no one could tell. Not even Luna.
"But I want to show you something."
He wrenched the camera around as if he was physically grabbing the collective heads of all his viewers and forcefully twisting their necks - he jerked the camera to point straight down at the street below.
On the road below, a huge fight was happening. Luna quickly saw Spider-Woman swinging through the air with her webs. She also noticed Captain America’s bright red, white, and blue shield bouncing off a metal arm.
"I think they’re still completely unaware that I’m up here..." Veritas mused audibly from behind the camera.
He had a point. The street they were currently destroying didn’t have any massive, Times Square-style billboards to automatically broadcast his face, and it was highly doubtful anyone down there still had their smartphones in their pocket. And even if they did, they were probably smashed up by now.
Wrapped in her bedsheets, Luna nodded sagely, completely agreeing with her god’s thoughts.
Then, just as abruptly as before, Veritas grabbed the camera with both hands, yanking it close to his mask. The sudden movement was jarring, violent but also... intimate.
"Let me tell you the real reason I’m here today," he whispered. The fake gloom instantly vanished, "It’s to avenge everyone I lost yesterday..."
"Ironic, isn’t it?" Veritas chuckled, his voice dropping to a dangerous, teasing purr.
The painted grin on his mask stretched impossibly wider.
"An Avenger... finally about to learn what it feels like to be the one on the receiving end of vengeance."

Natasha dove behind a battered minivan as another car came sailing through the air, crashing onto the asphalt exactly where she’d been standing a second earlier.
"Just stand still and die, dear!" Doctor Olivia Octavius said calmly, adjusting her glasses with one mechanical claw while another scooped up a parked Prius. "I really need to secure my funding!"
Natasha exhaled a highly annoyed breath. Multitasking was her specialty, but this was getting utterly ridiculous.
She had three very conflicting things to juggle right now.
Three objectives ran simultaneously in her head: keep Steve from engaging the Winter Soldier for too long per Fury’s cryptic orders, help Spider-Woman deal with the rogues’ gallery, and find a working vehicle to escape in.
Unfortunately, Doc Ock was treating every car on the street like ammunition, and there wouldn’t be anything left to hotwire at this rate.
She finalized her plan to take the good doctor down. Holstering her gun, Natasha drew her specialized electric batons. With a quick twist, she split the weapon in half, revealing a long, high-tensile wire glowing with electric current connecting the two sticks.
If Olivia wanted to throw things around with her shiny metal tentacles, Natasha was just going to tie those tentacles into a very painful, highly conductive knot.
Before charging back in, she peeked out from behind a crushed taxi to check on Captain America’s side of the battlefield.
She breathed a small sigh of relief. It seemed she still had a little leeway.
Steve was currently in the middle of a brutal 3v1 brawl - The Winter Soldier’s relentless gunfire, a slobbering toad mutant’s whipping tongue, and the four-armed bruiser’s crushing blows.
But even as she watched, Steve slammed his shield down with his full weight onto the four-armed mutant’s torso. The mutant crumpled, his thick legs buckling under the force. Strong arms, weak foundation. Steve had read the weakness in seconds.
’Two on one now,’ Natasha noted.
The Winter Soldier was already leveling his rifle, and the toad mutant’s grotesque tongue was slithering out, dripping something that was probably not just saliva.
Meanwhile, up in the air, Gwen was dealing with her own brand of chaos.
She swung hard around a streetlamp, narrowly avoiding a barrage of gunfire from the Vulture’s wing-mounted cannons.
"You know," she called out, twisting mid-air to dodge a swooping claw strike, "I usually respect my elders, but you’re making it really, really hard!"
Vulture spat, his eyes narrowing behind his beaked mask as he recalibrated his wing cannons. He was not old at all! He was just Fifty-one! That’s barely middle-aged!
Vulture shoved his thrusters to maximum power. The engines screamed, and suddenly he was closing the distance at terrifying speed. His clawed gauntlets extended, razor-sharp tips gleaming, inches from Gwen —
Something plummeted from above and slammed directly onto his back.
CRASH!
The impact drove Vulture straight into the asphalt like a meteor. Concrete shattered. Dust exploded outward.
When it cleared, a figure stood in the small crater, one foot planted squarely on the Vulture’s crumpled wing harness.
The white mask tilted in the sunlight.
