Fury tapped his fingers on the table as he finished listening to Hydra’s grand, horrific plan. Eliminating millions of potential threats in one go via Project Insight’s targeting systems was a nightmare scenario.
Natasha didn’t even need to brief him on the highway battle, the bridge fight, or the sudden, bizarre disappearance of Spider-Woman. The entire city had watched it live, and right now the whole country might be aware of it.
He let out a long, tired sigh. "Hill, bring that here."
Hill nodded. She walked over to a secure corner of the safehouse and retrieved a metallic suitcase. Placing it on the table, she popped the latches to reveal three glowing, high-tech server chips.
"What’s that?" Natasha asked, leaning over the table.
"Once the Helicarriers reach three thousand feet, they’ll triangulate with the Insight satellites, becoming fully weaponized," Hill explained.
"We need to breach those carriers and replace their targeting blades with our own," Fury said.
"One or two won’t cut it," Hill added. "We need to link all three carriers for this to work, because if even one of those ships remains operational, a whole lot of people are going to die."
Fury leaned forward. "We have to assume everyone aboard those carriers is HYDRA. We need to get past them, insert the server blades, and maybe, just maybe, we can salvage what’s left..."
Steve finally looked up, "We’re not salvaging anything," he said firmly. "We’re not just taking down the carriers, Fury. We’re taking down everything S.H.I.E.L.D. and Hydra... it all goes."
Fury frowned, his one good eye narrowing. "Look, Captain... I’m sorry about Barnes. Truly. But S.H.I.E.L.D. didn’t have anything to do with what happened to him."
"Even if it had, would you have told me?" Steve shot back, his voice rising with raw frustration. "Or would you have compartmentalized that too? Hydra grew right under your nose, Nick. You never even noticed."
Fury leaned back in his chair, a defensive scowl on his face. "I noticed! Why else do you think we’re meeting in this damp, miserable cave? This is war, Captain, and I already made preparations. Why else do you think I have these men ready? I even have reinforcements coming here."
"But you are too late," Steve said quietly, the weight of a century pressing down on his shoulders. "Too many people have already paid the price."
Hill looked between the two men, stepping in. "Steve is right about Hydra, but there are too many threats out there. The world still needs S.H.I.E.L.D., Cap."
Natasha chimed in, crossing her arms with a dry, cynical tilt of her head. "The world may need protection, but not from what S.H.I.E.L.D. has become. S.H.I.E.L.D. has to be torn down and built again from the ground up."
Fury held her gaze for a long moment. Then, slowly, he nodded. A tired, heavy nod. "Fair enough."
The tension in the room eased, just slightly.
Natasha leaned back as well, a small, curious smirk touching her lips. "By the way, Fury... who exactly are these ’reinforcements’ you mentioned?"

Meanwhile, on the open highway leading to Washington, D.C., a sleek, custom black car tore through the asphalt.
Behind the wheel sat Remy LeBeau - aka Gambit. He held the steering wheel loosely with one gloved hand, a wild, charming grin spread across his face as he pushed the pedal further down.
"Ah, mon ami, Ilovediscar!" Gambit laughed smoothly, his Cajun accent was thick.
Sitting in the front passenger seat was a small, blue-skinned mutant boy, clutching his seatbelt with white knuckles. Kurt Wagner - aka Nightcrawler - was staring wide-eyed at the speedometer in absolute terror.
"Please, Remy!" Kurt squeaked, his pointed tail wrapping tightly around his own waist. "You can slow down a bit, you know! There are still at least ten hours before the helicarrier launch!"
"Hahaha! Where’sdefunindat?" Gambit chuckled, casually drifting around a slow-moving semi-truck.
In the back seat, Anna Marie - aka Rogue - was leaning back comfortably.
She turned her head with a mischievous smirk toward the silent girl sitting beside her, who was staring out the tinted window with her white Spider-Woman mask pulled halfway up her face.
"What’s up, sugar?" Rogue drawled in her thick Southern accent. "You weren’t this quiet the last time we met. What’s on your mind? Is it about that masked boyfriend of yours?"
Gwen Stacy turned her head slowly, giving Rogue an epic, soul-crushing deadpan stare.
"He is not my boyfriend," Gwen said flatly.
Gambit smirked in the rearview mirror. Without taking his eyes completely off the road, he tapped his phone mounted on the dashboard and played an audio clip at full volume.
It was the viral audio clip from J. Jonah Jameson’s commentary over Veritas’s live stream:
"Is it love...?"
"Oh, definitely love..."
Then Gwen’s own voice, exasperated and flustered: "They edited the clip - would you stop saying that?!"

I know the release has gone down way too low. Work had been too hectic lately, even the patreon stock is exhausted. No promises but I’ll try to up the release a bit.
