Mate Collecting System: The Beast Kings Are Obsessed With Me
Chapter 114: Best Friends? Error!Koda squinted his golden eyes at Kiro, his small claws flexing. "I will literally rip those secrets right out of your throat if you don’t tell me."
"Koda!!!" Nuan delivered a swift, disciplinary smack right to the back of his head. "Don’t be so aggressive, even when you’re just talking! Bad manners!"
"Sorry, Witch," he mumbled, instantly shrinking back and rubbing his head.
"Well, you two better behave and focus on becoming the absolute gentlemen that every woman actually wants," Nuan said, brushing off her knees as she stood up.
The second bull was finally reaching the mouth of the pit. Nuan looked up just in time to see Kael and the hunters successfully haul the massive carcass out onto the green grass.
Heavy, exhausted huffing and panting carried down into the trench. Nuan chuckled, looking up at Selka, who was firmly holding the guide rope tied around Nuan’s waist.
Selka gave her a reassuring nod, wrapping the thick vine securely around her forearms to anchor herself.
Nuan gripped the rope and began climbing up the dirt wall, using the footholds carefully.
Beside her, Koda and Kiro simply unsheathed their claws and nimbly scrambled up the vertical dirt in a matter of seconds.
As Nuan reached the lip of the pit, Selka extended a strong hand, easily pulling her up onto the solid ground. "Good job, Furless."
"Hehe. You are incredibly strong, Miss Selka!" Nuan smiled, dusting the dirt off her crossroads market skirt.
"You are just as light as a feather," Selka replied smoothly.
Nuan paused, a dry chuckle escaping her lips. "Should I take that as a compliment or an insult? Given that it’s coming from a literal powerhouse of a beastwoman, I’m going to lean toward insult."
"I’m just stating a physical fact," Selka added with a small smile.
Before they could continue, a heavily panting Kael marched over, his shoulders glistening with sweat as he let out a possessive growl. "Mother!!! Why did you pull Nuan out? I was going to do that!"
Nuan stepped in between them, reaching up to playfully pat his heavily puffed, ripped biceps. "Look at those completely exhausted muscles, Kael. I just didn’t want to tire you out any more than you already are!"
"I am not tired," Kael growled softly, though his tail gave a tiny, betrayed twitch.
"Yeah?" Nuan looked down at his rapidly heaving chest and let out a bright chuckle.
"Well, let’s see how true that is, because now you all get the joy of dragging these massive bulls all the way back to the main camp!"
A collective, horrified silence washed over the clearing. Every single wolf’s eyes, including Kael’s, widened into massive saucers of pure despair. "Nooo!!!" someone groaned from the back.
"Haha! Okay, okay, calm down," Nuan laughed, waving her hands. "I guess we really are a bit too far from the camp to haul this much weight. How about we set up camp right here, eat as much fresh meat as we can hold, and rest up easily before cutting the rest into portable pieces?"
The entire pack immediately nodded their heads furiously, their despair instantly evaporating into pure excitement.
"Time to set up the fire pits!" Nuan chirped, her eyes sparkling as she prepared for a grand outdoor barbecue.
(Two weeks later)
Two weeks flew by in a blur of dust, sweat, and wood shavings. Nuan integrated herself fully into the rhythm of the pack, joining the hunting troop whenever she had free time.
She spent hours showing the wolves how to harvest thick jungle vines, braid them into unbreakable ropes, and construct simple, efficient pitfall traps.
The camp’s injury rate plummeted, while their meat stores were constantly overflowing.
But behind the scenes, Nuan was quietly preparing for her departure.
She meticulously crafted five sturdy wooden spears and a handful of extra bows. Oddly enough, the tips of the spears and arrows were left completely flat and round.
She was leaving room for the steel.
Oh, she had definitely tried to claim that tempting 50-kilogram steel reward from the system.
The moment levels dropped, Nuan had marched right up to Kael, slung an arm around his massive, furry shoulder, and loudly declared, "Oh, wow, look at us! We are best friends forever, buddy!" before immediately opening her mental inventory to claim the reward.
The system, however, had violently shut her down with a massive, mocking red error screen.
As it turned out, the blue buddy was much smarter than she gave it credit for. The quest required a genuine bond.
Nuan couldn’t just one-sidedly declare a friendship status to cheese the rewards; the chosen beastman had to mutually understand the concept and accept her as a best friend from the bottom of his heart.
Nuan refused to manipulate Kael’s genuine feelings just to obtain the steel.
But over the last fourteen days of living, laughing, and surviving alongside the silver-grey Alpha, something shifted.
Nuan realized with a sense of quiet warmth that she truly, genuinely considered Kael a dear friend.
He was fiercely loyal, surprisingly attentive, and stayed right by her side through every chaotic hunt.
The only massive roadblock remaining was their complete lack of alignment.
Nuan viewed him as a very good friend, but Kael’s primal beast mind literally had no category for "friendship" when it came to her.
To him, there were no steps, no levels, and no slow pacing. From the very second he chose her, she was straight up his mate, end of story.
Sigh... if only Kael understood human friendships. I’d have unlocked at least the Acquaintance and Good Friend rewards by now, Nuan murmured internally, tossing a stray twig into the dirt. But whatever. I’m not building a bond with him just to scam the system for rewards anyway.
Shaking the digital drama out of her head, Nuan walked over to the flat rocks where her clay bowls had been baking under the intense, blazing afternoon heat. She held her breath, carefully extending a finger to pinch the rim of a large clay pot.
The surface was solid, cool, and firm. Her finger didn’t leave a single dent or sticky smudge in the material.
A brilliant, ecstatic grin broke across her face, and her brown eyes sparkled with excitement.
"Oh, it is bone-dry!!!" Nuan chirped happily, clapping her hands together. "Finally! Time to bake some real pottery!"
