Kael and Eryx walked side by side, flanking Nuan on each side like an overly dramatic escort.

Kael, however, kept his massive arm wrapped securely around Nuan’s shoulder, practically gluing her to his side to ensure the python didn’t get a single millimeter too close.

"Sigh... Kael, our feet keep colliding together. At least give me a few inches of personal space to walk," Nuan groaned, her left shoe clipping his heavy boot for the third time.

Kael grumbled, shifting his stance to create a gap exactly three inches wide.

Nuan let out another long sigh. Seriously, he gave me literal inches only because I used the word ’inch’. This wolf operates entirely on malicious compliance.

Eryx chuckled smoothly, his long coils trailing silently over the damp leaves. "You have a very territorial friend, Nuan... I believe your friend is not aware that they cannot decide what their friend wants."

"He’s learning," Nuan murmured, giving Kael’s ribs a gentle nudge with her elbow.

Kael responded with a warning growl directed straight at the snake.

"Anyways, why are you even following us?" Nuan asked, shifting her spear to her outer hand.

"I am merely strolling, and since I have found excellent company, why not?" Eryx replied, his human torso swaying with the rhythm of his slithering lower half.

"Strolling, huh? It’s a bit weird that you go from watching the surroundings from a tree branch to casual strolling," Nuan pointed out, raising a skeptical eyebrow.

"What is so weird about it? I was sleeping for the last forty days after swallowing a big white-tailed deer," Eryx explained calmly. "Now that I have fully digested it, I will not need to eat for several days, so I am enjoying my stroll."

Nuan stopped dead in her tracks, her jaw dropping slightly before she hissed, "Days?! Are you kidding me? You’re a fully grown python beastman! You don’t even need to eat for twenty-four full moon cycles if you really want to! You can easily survive without food for that long!"

"Psss... true," Eryx purred, his fork-tipped tongue flicking out. "But it is no fun to keep strolling through the bushes and water alone... so when I find a good, healthy prey, I just cannot help but swallow them whole and sleep for weeks to kill the boredom."

Hmm, yeah, well, honestly, using a food coma to fight depression in a primitive jungle actually makes a twisted kind of sense, Nuan thought, continuing her walk.

Eryx smirked, his eyes gleaming with a sudden mischievous light as he licked his lips. "But it would be much more entertaining if I also had a friend to stroll with... or, psss... someone to get clingy with me to keep me warm," he whispered, leaning his upper body right across the path toward Nuan.

Before the python could even finish his sentence, Kael moved with lightning speed. He violently yanked Nuan behind his back, switching places with her mid-stride so he was now walking directly next to the snake. "Should I warm you up myself, you crawling, legless lizard?!" Kael barked, his bared fangs inches from Eryx’s nose.

"Tsk... such a mood killer," Eryx whispered, gracefully leaning his torso back onto his coils. He tilted his head, peering around Kael’s bulky shoulder to lock eyes with the girl behind him. "Nuan, can I be your friend too?" he asked smoothly.

"Nope! Nada! Absolutely no!" Nuan popped the words out instantly, shaking her head so hard her hair whipped around. "I would much rather keep you calling me your borrower! No more friends, my slot capacity is full!"

Kael froze for a split second before booming roar of laughter erupted from his chest. "Bwahahaha!!! Rejected!!! Nuan rejected you straight to your face!" the alpha cheered, his silver tail wagging so violently behind him that it nearly slapped Nuan in the shins.

"Psss... I should have eaten silver-tailed wolf instead," Eryx whispered, his slitted eyes darting dangerously toward Kael’s lower half.

Kael growled instantly, his ears twitching forward in pure irritation. "What did you just say, snake?!"

"I said it hurt my feelings, Nuan..." Eryx smooth-talked, completely ignoring the alpha as he looked around Kael’s broad chest to catch her eye. "But I suppose I do prefer our lender and borrower relationship. After all, all relationships are unique in their own way. I bet I am your only lender right now, but you must be having plenty of other friends besides your alpha friend here."

"Yeah... you are the only lender I have ever had in my entire life," Nuan hissed back, stepping out from behind Kael to glare at the python.

Never, even back on Earth, did I ever have a lender or owe anyone a single dime! I hate debts.

She crossed her arms, a proud smirk returning to her lips. "But since you mention it, yes, I have two massive Elephant sisters who are my friends. So mind your manners! If you ever try anything funny, those are friends you cannot swallow whole, but they can definitely stomp on your spine hard enough to snap you like a KitKat! Oh, and I also have an eagle friend too, so you better watch the skies unless you want to become a giant sky-snack!"

Psss... so the ridiculous rumors circulating around about her and the Elephant clan are actually true... Eryx thought, his interest spiking. Also, an eagle friend... psss, interesting.

Before the two males could start another verbal sparring match, Nuan stopped right in front of a massive, moss-covered boulder.

High above it, a thick cluster of the broad, absorbent green leaves she desperately needed hung down. "Alright, stay right here, you two. Do not move an inch or scratch each other’s eyes out. I’ll climb up and collect these real quick."

Kael stayed at the base of the rock, completely silent for once, his brows furrowed as he got lost in his own thoughts.

Nuan quickly scaled the rough surface of the boulder, pulling herself up onto the top ledge. Her eyes widened happily as she looked at the thick foliage. "Whoa... it seems like the more intense the summer heat gets, the faster and thicker these things grow!" she murmured, immediately pulling out her knife to harvest the large, soft leaves, stacking them carefully before moving them into her system inventory.

I’ll make sure I collect as many as possible before the monsoon hits, because I bet these things will turn to mush once the heavy rains start. Better safe than sorry.

While Nuan was completely occupied on top of the rock, counting her leaf hoard, Eryx silently slithered a bit closer to Kael.

He leaned his human torso right up to the wolf’s ear, a thoroughly malicious, mocking smirk stretching across his lips.

"You see... I am unique. I am the only lender she has ever had in her entire life," Eryx whispered into Kael’s ear, his voice dripping with venomous amusement. "Unlike you, who is just another ordinary friend to her... and maybe just an easily replaceable one, considering her other friends seem far greater and stronger than a mere wolf."

Kael’s first instinct was to violently snap his fangs right at the python’s throat, but as the words sank in, his silver tail slowly drooped toward the dirt.

A sharp, stinging pang hit him right in the center of his chest, and his large, clawed hand slowly clenched into a tight, trembling fist as he stared blankly at the ground.
