Selka didn’t dare wander too far from the safety of the marsh. Despite the danger of the crocodiles, losing sight of the only water source in this brutal landscape would be a definitive death sentence.

Finally, after a few minutes of agonizing stalking through the scorched stalks, she spotted a small cluster of plains hares foraging in a patch of thinner grass.

Her silver eyes instantly locked onto them, her body freezing into a rigid, unmoving stance.

But this wasn’t the dense, shadowy jungle she had ruled for decades.

She had absolutely zero experience hunting in the wide-open, fragile ecosystem of the grasslands.

She took two incredibly slow, silent steps forward, but the brittle, sun-dried golden grass let out a microscopic, sharp crackle.

Instantly, the hares’ long ears twitched directly toward her location. These were plains hares—creatures born and bred under the constant threat of cheetahs and jackals, perpetually hyper-aware of their surroundings. The tiny rustle was more than enough. They spotted her silhouette.

Realizing her cover was blown, Selka leaped forward in a desperate, explosive sprint to catch the closest one.

But the hare was lightning fast. In a literal blink, it zipped sideways, flying through the thick, tall grass with an erratic, zigzagging agility that left Selka completely disoriented.

Pop!

The hare dived cleanly into a hidden underground burrow.

Selka skidded to a halt, her chest heaving violently as her tongue lolled out of her jaws. Huff... huff... huff...

With a demoralized poof of smoke, she collapsed back into her human form, sweating profusely under the blazing sun.

"Fuck..." she rasped, her voice completely hoarse. "I wasted my remaining energy... and now I’m ten times more thirsty!" She stared out at the shimmering horizon in pure frustration. "How the hell am I supposed to stalk anything when the grass betrays every single movement?"

"Ahh... sss... damn it." She winced sharply as the salty sweat dripped into the open jaw bite on her shoulders, making the wounds sting like fire.

Wiping her brow with the back of her trembling palm, she turned her sluggish steps back toward the marsh, completely defeated by the tiny prey.

But as she approached the perimeter of the swamp, the wind suddenly shifted.

Selka drew in a breath, and her heart instantly skipped a beat, sinking straight into her stomach.

A violent surge of adrenaline hit her system, making her pulse throb painfully against her ribs.

She desperately tried to force her body to shift back into her wolf form, but her core energy was entirely depleted. Her muscles locked up, flatly refusing to let her use any more power.

She stood completely frozen in her vulnerable human form, her skin prickling with terror. The tall golden grass around her began to rustle violently from all directions.

High-pitched, unpleasant hooting, maniacal barking, and mocking screeching noises suddenly erupted, echoing in a terrifying circle around her.

Hyenas...! Selka realized, her eyes darting frantically across the brush.

Through the golden stalks, a large clan of hyenas stepped into the clearing. Instead of their beast forms, they were in their human guises—their bodies lean, aggressively muscular, and built for brutal endurance.

They looked like a gang of ruthless, nomadic rowdies. Every single one of them carried a terrifying, unhinged laughing smile, their lips curled back to proudly display sharp, predatory teeth.

Selka’s limbs felt completely numb. Looking at the sheer number of the swarming clan, she knew she was staring directly into the face of certain death. There was no escaping them in her current state.

A weak, bitter chuckle escaped her dry lips as she faced the surrounding circle. Never thought my end would come in the dusty plains... so far away from my own territory.

The high-pitched giggles, sharp yelps, and deep, vibrating growls multiplied until the sound was deafening.

The clan sounded like dozens of voices laughing, arguing, and screaming all at once, creating a chaotic wall of noise that made the open plain feel claustrophobically small.

Selka stared a few meters ahead at the marsh, her vision swimming. I should have stayed by the marsh, she thought bitterly, her tail tightly tucked between her legs.

If she had stayed by the crocodiles, she would have at least had a bottleneck to defend. Here, she was entirely exposed.

"We have someone here!" one of the hyenas laughed, a manic, grating sound.

"Look! We have our ancestors’ enemy!" another added, stepping closer, his shoulder muscles flexing.

"A wild wolf on the open plains? How pathetic!"

"What should we do with her? She looks half-dead already!"

"Is she a lone wolf? Where is your pack, little puppy?!"

Selka’s silver eyes kept darting frantically from face to face as they surrounded her, passing cruel comments, whistling, and making uneasy, mocking noises.

There was absolutely nowhere to escape. The circle had already closed.

A heavy wave of despair washed over her. If I die here... Furless might never wake up. Kael is still too naive to handle a grieving pack on his own... If only my mate were still alive, this day might have never come.

As Selka’s final, heavy thoughts drifted back to her family in the jungle, a sudden, violent bump from behind abruptly snapped her out of her daze.

She spun around. Towering over her was a tall, lean beastman with sandy-brown hair and skin covered in faint, dark spots.

A shaggy, coarse mane ran down the back of his neck, and his large, rounded ears twitched aggressively at every sound.

His amber eyes held a cruel, sadistic glint, and his broad muzzle stretched into a sharp, unsettling grin that bared rows of bone-crushing teeth.

"Aaaah..." he dragged out the sound, staring down at her in a way that made her skin crawl with pure disgust.

"Ayyy! Look at him go!" someone called out from the back of the crowd, followed by a loud chorus of rowdy whistles and mocking giggles.

Selka turned fully to face the spotted beastman, her silver eyes flaring with furious, unyielding Alpha pride.

Even in her weakened state, she refused to look like prey. Tsk... their females are the dominant ones, so these males have to act like submissive trash around their own women, Selka thought, her jaw clenching as she kept spinning in a slow circle, throwing predatory glares at the surrounding mob. Now look at their shit-eating faces the moment they find a solitary female wolf alone!

But her fierce glares did absolutely nothing to scare them. The hyenas simply closed the distance even more, emboldened by her human form and the smell of her blood.

Suddenly, a hand lunged out from the crowd, grabbing her tightly by her injured shoulder.

"GET OFF ME!!!" Selka growled.

Using every single ounce of her remaining, buried strength, she slashed her sharp fingernails through the air.

Her claws caught the attacker across the face, parting the crowd in a sudden spray of blood. Not wasting a single millisecond, she threw herself through the small gap and began to sprint blindly across the golden plain.

Behind her, the entire clan erupted into a chorus of unhinged, booming laughter.

They didn’t even look angry—they looked thrilled.

The hyenas sprinted after her with terrifying, effortless endurance, their heavy feet thudding against the dry earth.

They intentionally stayed just a few paces behind her, making those unsettling, screeching noises and manic barks to taunt her, playing with her like a exhausted hare before the final kill.
