The protective circle of giants shifted with a slow, grinding grace. The heavy wall of gray bodies parted, opening a straight path in the middle of the herd.

Standing tall at the front of the line was a colossal elephant draped in a web of deep wrinkles and ancient scars.

She possessed a pair of very old, remarkably experienced eyes that bore straight into Selka’s soul.

The Matriarch.

Selka instantly lowered her predatory eyes out of instinct, bowing her head slightly before looking back up with a fierce, respectful gaze. "I am forever grateful to you for saving my life," she rasped, her voice rough. "You have brought me back from the very mouth of death."

"Do not flatter us," the Matriarch trumpeted softly, her deep voice vibrating through the dry earth as she looked down at Selka’s bleeding, ragged human form. "You do not belong on these open plains, wolf. If you wish to live, you had better turn around and go back into your dense jungles."

The Matriarch’s massive head slowly began to swing toward the muddy marshland, signaling the herd to resume their march to the water.

Panicking, Selka took a quick, careful step forward. "Wait! I... I came here all the way from the jungle specifically to meet you! I came to beg for help from the all-mighty rulers of the plains! I came to seek your blessing!"

The Matriarch halted her massive frame, her large ears flaring slightly as she looked back. "Explain."

Selka swallowed hard, nodding rapidly. "There is a unique female in our pack, brought back by our Alpha. A furless, extraordinary creature. Right now, she is lying completely unconscious and will not wake up. She has lost far too much blood after a brutal cougar attack. I... I beg you to help us! Please, bless us with the Red Roots!"

"Birth and death are the natural cycles of this world," the Matriarch replied coldly, her trunk sweeping across the horizon. "You meat-eaters take the lives of others constantly. A cougar tried to take your furless one. There is nothing we can help you with."

Desperate, Selka stepped even closer, coming right beneath the Matriarch’s towering head, nearly invading her personal space.

"Our ancestors... or rather, all the beasts who were blessed by the Good Witch Aestra many generations ago, have a duty! We believe she has appeared again, and right now, she is testing us to see if we are worthy enough to save her!" Selka declared, knowing the immense, terrifying cost if they discovered she was exaggerating.

At the mention of the name, the surrounding elephants gasped, their large eyes widening in shock. But the Matriarch remained perfectly composed, her gaze sharpening. "The Witch Aestra?"

"Yes! Just as the ancient prophecy claims!" Selka pressed, her words pouring out. "She is a furless, smooth-skinned creature who walks in only one form. She possesses incredible witchcraft... making unknown tools out of wood and steel, and bringing objects into existence out of thin air!"

"What proof do you have that she is truly the real Witch Aestra?" the Matriarch questioned heavily.

"Her very existence in our Alpha’s den is the proof," Selka said, her voice unshakable. "Anyone who looks upon her can tell she is a being far beyond us wild beasts."

"Mother..." one of the Matriarch’s daughters murmured from the side, her massive ears twitching. "Is this the legendary tale you have always told us? The good Witch who helped our people once during the Great Drought? When everything dried down, when there was nothing left to eat and our ancestors were starving, losing all their muscle, energy, and blood... she appeared and gave us the Red Roots to instantly boost our lifeforce?"

"Yes..." the Matriarch murmured, her ancient eyes turning wistful. "The prophecy claims that the Witch who gave all animals a second life in their time of crisis would return."

"And..." Selka gulped, seizing the moment. "It is our turn to give her a second life. The Witch needs help from the very ones she helped long ago. Our Silver-Grey Clan’s Whiteclaw herbs are not enough; they are healing her torn flesh, but her body desperately needs blood, or she will never wake up from her slumber."

The Matriarch stood completely silent for a long time, the heavy weight of her thoughts hanging over the plain. "It is said the Good Witch will appear again to fight against the malicious Evil Witch, Nyxara... and all those the good Witch saved will become her strength alongside another powerful entity. We cannot ignore the arrival of the Witch among us beasts again. However... I cannot simply hand our sacred Red Roots over to a wolf... nor will the root have any effect unless one of our own people harvests and administers it."

The Matriarch leaned down slightly. "Very well. How many are there in your pack?"

"Sixty, including myself, the elders, the adults, and the young pups," Selka answered immediately.

A faint, knowing smile seemed to touch the Matriarch’s massive elephant face. "Only one of my daughters would be enough to flatten a pack... but Zuri, Amara—you two will go with her. If this is not a lie, you will help that woman."

"Yes, Mother!!" both Zuri and Amara trumpeted in unison, stepping forward.

"My two eldest daughters will accompany you through the jungle," the Matriarch warned Selka, her voice dropping into a thunderous rumble. "If you speak the truth, they will save her. If you lie... your entire pack will face the devastating consequences of their wrath."

Selka bowed deeply. "My clan will be forever grateful for your mercy."

"Before that..." the Matriarch said.

She turned away, using her long, thin, ivory tusks to dig fiercely into the dry, baked earth. With a few powerful thrusts, she unearthed a massive, roundish red root from the deep soil—it resembled an enormous crimson beet.

The Matriarch wrapped her powerful trunk around it, pulling it cleanly from the dirt, and held it over Selka.

"Open your mouth," she ordered.

Selka nodded, tilting her head back and opening her jaws wide.

The Matriarch expertly squeezed the thick Red Root with her trunk directly above Selka’s face. A heavy, thick, blood-red juice began to pour out like rich syrup, dripping straight into the wolf’s mouth.

Gulp... gulp... gulp...

"Cough! Ahh... ahh...!" Selka gasped, wiping her mouth as she swallowed every single drop of the potent liquid. She had never tasted anything like it in her entire life.

The very instant the juice hit her stomach, a massive, explosive surge of energy rippled through her veins.

Her dangerously depleted circulation surged back to full strength.

The suffocating haze in her head vanished, her mind turning razor-sharp. Even more miraculous, the deep, stinging scratches, bruises, and bite marks left by the hyenas and Red Claws began to knit together and heal in a matter of seconds, leaving her skin flawless.

"You looked desperately in need of it, thirsty one," the Matriarch noted softly. "To go this far through suffering and pain for someone else... I truly hope your words are no lie."

The older giant waved her trunk toward the tree line. "Now, begin your journey. My daughters will dig the roots for your Witch once they see the truth with their own eyes."

Selka nodded firmly as Zuri and Amara walked over, lifting their heavy trunks to affectionately hug their mother’s head one last time. "We will meet you on the other side of the Golden Grasslands when your task is complete," the Matriarch told them.

The two massive daughters nodded their heads, turning their attention to Selka. Zuri gracefully rolled the tip of her long trunk, hovering it directly in front of Selka’s feet. "Get on," she communicated smoothly. "Do not waste your renewed energy running through the heat. And remember... do not dare start eating meat in front of us on the way."

Selka hesitated for a fraction of a second, then gently placed her feet onto the strong grip of the trunk. With one effortless, fluid motion, Zuri lifted the silver-grey wolf up, placing her safely onto her massive, broad back.

Perched high atop the ruler of the plains, Selka looked back at the retreating herd. Against all odds, she had succeeded in her impossible journey across the grasslands—and now, salvation was marching straight toward Kael’s den.
