Lorelei POV
By late that morning, I found myself standing in a spacious private dressing room, shifting my weight from one foot to the other while the designer Kaelen had sent arrived with her assistants.
"This is the dress the Alpha King personally picked out for you, Miss," she said, gesturing for her assistants to carefully remove the gown from its garment bag.
A soft gasp escaped me the second the fabric caught the light.
The floor-length gown was absolutely beautiful, made from deep midnight-blue silk and covered in thousands of tiny, teardrop-shaped diamond crystals that shimmered with every little movement.
The neckline dipped gracefully off my shoulders, while the fitted bodice hugged my waist in a way that made it obvious the dress had been designed to show off every curve.
"I’ll need to take your exact measurements and make a few adjustments so it fits you perfectly," the designer explained, giving me a polite smile. "Is that alright?"
"Of course," I nodded, still staring at the dress like I couldn’t believe it was actually mine.
A few minutes later, the heavy gown was carefully slipped over my head, and when I finally looked at myself in the floor-length gilded mirror, another soft gasp escaped me.
I barely recognized myself.
The dress completely transformed me.
Unfortunately, my excitement didn’t last very long.
I had naively assumed the adjustments would take a few minutes, but somehow, I ended up standing in the same position for well over an hour while the designer worked around me. She wasn’t simply marking the fabric with chalk and sticking in a few pins either.
She was adjusting the seams, reshaping parts of the gown, and making tiny alterations right there, with her needle moving so quickly and precisely that I was honestly afraid to breathe too hard.
By the time she was halfway through, my throat felt completely dry.
Paul and Isaac weren’t allowed inside the private dressing room, which meant I had no one to even ask for a glass of water.
So I was forced to stand there, trying to maintain perfect posture while repeatedly swallowing my painfully dry saliva and silently wondering how women were expected to survive this kind of torture just to wear a dress.
Finally, she stepped back and gave the dress one last look. "All finished."
The gown now fit me perfectly, hugging my curves before falling into a long, elegant train behind me. It was honestly breathtaking, the kind of dress that actually made me look like I belonged in the position Kaelen had suddenly thrown me into.
I couldn’t help wondering what his reaction would be when he finally saw me wearing it.
Unfortunately, I was far too exhausted to care anymore.
The second the designer unzipped the dress and helped me out of it, I changed back into my comfortable top and loose pants before practically collapsing into a velvet armchair with a long sigh.
The designer packed away her tools, gave me a polite bow, and finally stepped out of the dressing room.
The second the door clicked shut behind her, Paul and Isaac walked back in.
I opened my mouth, fully prepared to complain about how thirsty and hungry I was, but Isaac beat me to it.
"Mrs. Whitmore has arrived for your etiquette lesson, Miss."
A long, miserable groan escaped me as I buried my face in my hands.
Thankfully, Mrs. Whitmore took one look at me and decided I needed food before she tortured me any further. She patiently waited while I ate a proper lunch and drank several glasses of water, and by the time I was finished, I finally felt human again.
With my energy restored, I walked into the grand library feeling surprisingly confident.
I was ready.
Or at least, I thought I was.
Mrs. Whitmore barely touched the usual posture and walking exercises before jumping straight into the political structure of the empire, and within minutes, I realized I had severely underestimated this lesson.
She explained how everything was organized, starting from the very top with Kaelen, who held the highest political and military authority as Alpha King. Directly beneath him was the Queen Luna, followed by the Royal Beta, the High Council, and then the territory Alphas who governed the different regions under the empire.
Below them were their Lunas, the Betas and other high-ranking officials, followed by the ordinary pack members and commoners.
I listened carefully, trying to memorize everything as she continued explaining how much authority each position actually held.
Eventually, I raised my hand slightly.
"And where do I fit into all of that?" I asked, frowning. "I mean, right now, I’m only the Lady of the Empire, so where exactly does that put me?"
Mrs. Whitmore hesitated. It was only for a second, but I noticed it immediately.
"Well..." she began carefully, folding her hands together. "Because you and His Majesty have not yet completed a formal bonding ceremony, your position is not officially recognized as that of the Queen Luna."
I nodded slowly.
"In terms of the current hierarchy, your influence would technically place you above most lower-ranking Alphas because you are the woman publicly chosen by the Alpha King, but you still remain below the High Council in terms of formal authority."
My brows pulled together.
"So I’m important enough for everyone to pay attention to me, but not important enough to actually have authority over them?"
Mrs. Whitmore gave me a sympathetic look.
"Unfortunately, that’s a pretty accurate way of putting it."
A small sigh escaped me at that, because if I was really going to run into Jaxen again, that definitely wasn’t reassuring.
From there, Mrs. Whitmore moved on to media training, warning me that reporters would probably swarm the banquet, looking for any chance to bait me into revealing something about Kaelen’s private life or political affairs.
"Nine out of ten people at tomorrow night’s banquet will either be plotting against the Alpha King or desperately trying to find a way to get on his good side," she explained, her sharp eyes fixed on me. "Either way, you’ll be one of the easiest targets in the room."
