Samantha had been distracted from the very beginning, her eyes entirely fixed on Kane as he handled his sword. She couldn’t look away from the way the muscles in his arms flexed and rippled as he gripped the hilt.

To her, there was no man alive in the entire tribe who could match his rugged handsomeness.

Kane was the bravest and strongest of them all, a perfect warrior possessing an equally striking beauty. Because he shared her same royal bloodline, it only made sense to her—naturally, they would produce beautiful, powerful and healthy children together.

But that could only happen if he severed his union with the Princess of the West and married her instead.

Samantha wiped the sweat from her palms onto her cloth, then pulled her hair back, tying it tightly so it wouldn’t fall into her face again during drills.

"Are you alright?" Cassius asked, noticing the intense look on her face. He stepped into her line of sight, inadvertently blocking her view of the king, which instantly irritated her.

"I do not wish to speak to you, Right Hand," Samantha snapped, rolling her eyes. She stepped aside to regain a clear view of the king, who was now talking to a female Omega.

Anger surged through her vein as she watched Kane speak to the girl with a rare smile. What was he saying to her?

As a werewolf, Samantha could have easily extended her senses to eavesdrop on their conversation, but the king had strictly warned everyone against listening in on his private matters.

Knowing she was already suffering through enough punishment, Samantha didn’t dare push her luck.

"You will never win him over if you keep behaving like this," Cassius told her bluntly.

"How exactly am I behaving?" she asked, her teeth gritted in frustration. The king spent time with different women all the time, yet she had never once openly complained. "Don’t you see what he is doing over there?"

Cassius turned and glanced in the king’s direction for a brief moment, completely unwilling to entertain her jealousy today. "I see absolutely nothing wrong with what is going on over there."

"I should have known there is no difference between the two of you," Samantha sneered, spitting on the ground. "In fact, you are worse, considering you spend your nights rotting away in taverns. You disgust me."

"It’s better than chasing a woman for ten years," he laughed, but she didn’t join in.

Her nose twitched as her eyes began to glow a vibrant purple, staring fixedly in his direction. Her fangs slid out from her gums as the partial transformation unfolded.

Cassius didn’t move an inch. He just stood there, watching her display as if it were a clown show. He was far stronger and a vastly better fighter than she could hope to be.

"Samantha, get back in line or I will report you to the king," the Gamma in charge of her training threatened.

She desperately wanted to disobey his orders, but she didn’t dare do it with the king standing right there. Taking a step back, she hissed, "I will make sure you pay for this. Trust me, you won’t be able to do a thing to stop me."

"Why would I need to do anything, Samantha?" Cassius’s lips curled into a mischievous smile. "The queen will take care of it."

His parting words struck a nerve, hitting her with the physical force of a thousand slaps. Seething with rage, Samantha stormed back to the arena and rejoined the rest of the group.

The Omegas were already mocking her for being forced into their ranks. They were entirely unfriendly, trying to pull all manner of petty tricks on her until the Gamma stepped in and stopped them.

Samantha hated them with every fiber of her being... but deep down, she knew she couldn’t entirely blame them for how they treated her.

She had brought this on herself by constantly humiliating and mocking their lower rank in the pack.

Many times, they had reported her to the King and he had warned her repeatedly not to insult those who had fallen short of grace. Of course, she had never stopped tormenting them.

And today, she was forced to train alongside them. Kane knew exactly how horrible this punishment would be for her pride, and that was precisely why he had orchestrated it.

"I already know everything you are teaching them, Fenrir," Samantha complained to the Gamma, crossing her arms. "I am more advanced than all of them put together. Why force me to train with them?"

"Look, she thinks she is better than us," one of the girls muttered with deep disdain.

"Keep your mouth shut or I will break every bone in your body," Samantha threatened, taking a menacing step forward.

"You won’t be doing any such thing here," Fenrir intervened, stepping firmly between them. "The king made it absolutely clear that no preferential treatment will be given to you."

"What?" Samantha was pissed, turning sharply to look in the direction where Kane and Cassius stood. They were deep in discussion, talking about only what the Goddess knew.

"Yes. If you are tired of training, you may take a break by sitting over there," Fenrir said, pointing toward a nearby rock. "It is just for ten minutes. Use them wisely, Your Highness."

A deep frown settled on her face as her hands balled into tight fists. The other girls found it amusing to see her in such a dilemma.

But Samantha vowed that once her punishment ended, she would hunt them down one by one and show them exactly what it felt like to mock a royal.

Not long after she settled on the rock, a long procession approached the king. Samantha took a good look at the group and noticed that her mother was among them.

Her heart skipped a beat. Had something bad happened? The moment she stood up to go and meet them, Fenrir blocked her, preventing her from taking another step. It pissed her off to no end.

His refusal forced her to bypass the king’s warnings and use her primal senses to listen in on the conversation.

Her eyes glowed a vibrant purple as she focused her hearing, listening carefully to the distant voices. It was in that exact moment she heard the king stripping her mother of her title and offering the position to the princess.

Samantha was utterly shocked that her cousin would do such a thing. She couldn’t believe her ears, and just as she was about to push past the Gamma to go and speak her mind, her mother accepted the king’s decision.

Samantha was deeply disappointed that her mother hadn’t fought back. She turned her gaze to the princess, who still looked entirely surprised by the king’s sudden decree.

Deep down, Samantha knew this had been the outsider’s aim from the very beginning: to strip away everything that belonged to their family. First, she had taken Kane, and now she had stolen her mother’s position. What would be next? Her brother, Ragnar?

Samantha bit her lower lip bitterly as she watched her mother walk away, thoroughly humiliated. There would have to be payback for this, and she was going to be the one to deliver it.

Just as she was about to cut off her heightened hearing and stop eavesdropping, she caught the king talking to the princess about some books.

Samantha wondered what they could possibly be about. Her curiosity piqued as she listened to them discuss the books the princess had brought from the West.

She was even more stunned when she heard Kane tell Arianna that he didn’t know how to read, asking the princess to read them to him instead.

And the princess had foolishly agreed, believing his lie. It was absurd—who in the entire tribe didn’t know that the king was perfectly literate?

Samantha laughed quietly at that level of stupidity. However, the princess’s gullibility quickly took a backseat to a more pressing question: what exactly was inside those books that Kane would pretend he couldn’t read just to hear them aloud?

The only way to find out was to get them from the princess’s box first.
