Mated To The Barbarian King Who Is My Ex-husband's Father.
Chapter 57: Not The Gentle Girl He Used To knowEthan had managed to stop his uncle from telling his father about his relationship with Arianna last night, but it was only a matter of time. Cassius was the king’s dog and would eventually reveal the truth. The only thing Ethan could do was buy time and run away with Arianna to the west before his father found out.
Another problem was her sudden stubbornness. Ethan wondered where she had learned to be like this. Arianna had always been an obedient girl who would do anything for him.
He still couldn’t figure out how she discovered he was cheating on her with Selena. His affairs had been conducted completely in secret with no witnesses, so how did she know?
His gaze shifted to her as she sat quietly beside his father. Ethan loved the yellow dress on her; it brightened not just her face, but the entire pavilion.
He stole glances at her from time to time, wishing she were seated next to him instead.
Through it all, she didn’t return a single one of his looks, which annoyed him slightly—he couldn’t believe how quickly her love had changed.
He didn’t look away until he noticed Selena’s glare fixed on him. She looked furious.
Quickly, Ethan cleared his throat and took a sip from the cup beside him. He wouldn’t have brought her along to the North in the first place, but Selena had insisted and since she was carrying his child, he had given in.
"You arranged a marriage alliance for Ragnar with another pack without informing me first, Aunt. Have you forgotten the traditions when it comes to that?" His father’s voice jarred him out of his thoughts.
Even though Ethan wasn’t the target of his father’s anger, the sheer fury in the king’s tone nearly gave him a heart attack.
"Is Ragnar getting married?" Ethan asked, his eyes darting back and forth. No one responded, but he could easily read the answer from their faces.
"Ask your aunt, who believes she can fix marriage alliances," the king told him coldly.
"Ragnar and marriage? The boy doesn’t seem like someone who wants to settle down right now," Ethan chuckled, breaking a piece of bread with his hands. "I wonder what he was thinking when he agreed to it."
"My brother doesn’t know about this!" Samantha snapped, defending him. "Do not talk about him like that."
"Do not act like you care about your brother. You don’t, Samantha."
"I am not your age mate... you must learn to respect your elders," Samantha said, her brows pinched in sharp annoyance. If the king hadn’t been sitting right at the head of the table, she would have punched Ethan straight in the face.
"The both of you will behave," the king warned, his deep voice slicing through the air. "I wasn’t talking to either of you. The question was directed to your mother. Remain quiet."
"Forgive me, Father. I didn’t mean to," Ethan apologized, his gaze shifting over to his aunt, who was still frozen in a state of absolute shock.
"You thought I wouldn’t find out," the king said, turning his gaze back to her. "I would have discovered the truth eventually, perhaps much later, but Samantha made it much easier for me."
Samantha closed her eyes in bitter shame as she heard the king mention her name. Her mother was going to skin her alive after this... of that, she was painfully certain.
Ethan couldn’t suppress a sudden burst of laughter, catching himself only when he met his father’s lethal, icy glare. Clearing his throat, he smirked and asked, "Why would the devil ever need an intervention when he has a daughter like Samantha?"
"Keep quiet, Ethan," Arianna cut in. She had been sitting in total silence until now. "This is a serious matter and you are trying to turn it into a joke."
"I agree with your stepmother," Selena added, shooting him a look of utter disgust.
Ethan fell silent. It seemed every woman in his life had decided to gang up against him now, of all times.
"Forgive me, Kane. I didn’t mean to go..." Aunt Freya started, but he cut her off without hesitation.
"That alliance is cancelled," the king declared smoothly. "I have decided to wed Selena and Ethan. You shall prepare so that right after the next moon, they may take their vows."
"What?" Ethan whipped around to face his father, thoroughly stunned by the sudden announcement. This conversation was supposed to be about Ragnar. How on earth had it turned onto him?
He didn’t want to marry Selena... not anymore. Marrying her meant giving up on Arianna and the West forever and he wasn’t willing to risk that.
"Queen Arianna suggested it to me yesterday and I found her reasoning quite sound," Kane explained calmly. "Both you and Selena are expecting a pup. It is only wise that you begin learning how to live as the family you set out to be."
"You should have asked for my opinion first," Ethan insisted, gritting his teeth as he fought to keep his rising fury in check. Was this Arianna’s twisted way of punishing him?
If so, it was working, because he was about to lose his goddamn mind.
"What opinion, Ethan?" Arianna asked, offering him a sweet, innocent smile. "The two of you love each other, don’t you?"
"Y-yes... but we are still trying to figure things out," he lied, his jaw clenched.
"It certainly doesn’t look like you’re taking your time figuring things out," she countered softly. Her gaze drifted pointedly to Selena’s stomach before a brief, delightfully mischievous smirk touched her lips.
"Speak to her with respect," his father warned, his tone dangerously low.
"Or else what, Father?" Ethan challenged, standing up from his seat. While he didn’t look openly violent, the sheer rage etched across his face made it clear just how furious he was.
"Calm down, Ethan," his aunt urged gently. "You shouldn’t let anyone drive you to the point of disrespecting your father."
"And who might that be, Aunt?" Arianna interjected coolly, shifting the bowl of soup toward the center of the dining table. She had reached her absolute limit with them especially with Ethan.
"What has Ethan done ever since he returned, apart from throwing endless tantrums?" Arianna continued, turning her cold gaze on him. "If he didn’t want Selena, he shouldn’t have brought her back here carrying his child. If none of you care to consider the poor girl and the unborn pup, I certainly will."
She pinned Ethan with an unyielding glare. "Sit down."
Ethan stared at her, utterly stunned by her commanding authority. He certainly hadn’t expected such sharpness from her.
To make matters worse, his father remained deathly silent beside her...a sign that signaled extreme danger. Clenching his jaw, Ethan did as he was told and sank back into his seat.
"The marriage is going to happen," Arianna stated firmly.
"You don’t tell me what to do," Ethan spat back quietly.
"No, I don’t," she countered without missing a beat. "But the king does. And you will do precisely what your father, your Alpha, and your Lord has commanded, Ethan. There is no debate."
Ethan sat speechless, completely thrown off balance. He couldn’t comprehend what was happening, but he felt certain of one thing: something had to have possessed his Arianna, because the fierce woman standing before him wasn’t the gentle girl he used to know.
