Mercenary’s War

Chapter 2576 - 2552: I Am the Strongest

Even two kilometers away, Hammer could feel the violent tremor underfoot.

In an instant, Hammer felt like he was soaring into the sky, his entire body light and his footing feeling like he was treading on cotton, as if he had drunk too much vodka.

Everything was so wonderful, but the violent explosion was just the beginning. Immediately afterward, his eyes, already shaken once by the blast, saw faint but extremely dense flashes, and his ears, having been hit once by the explosion sound, heard continuous and dense explosions.

It was like a firework shot into the sky, then released many small balls and immediately began crackling.

Two missiles were fired, one a high-explosive warhead, and the other a cluster warhead. The cluster warhead disperses in the air, decelerating, and then seeks appropriate small targets to attack, so its explosion was a bit delayed.

Both missiles landed in the target area, Hammer could confirm this.

Therefore, Hammer immediately began to speak quickly and joyfully, "The delivery has been signed for, repeat, the delivery has been signed for."

Thick smoke billowed from the direction of the airport, and soon a red flame burst out, visible from two kilometers away.

Hammer was even more delighted and shouted, "The goods are very good, the effect is fantastic, thank those delivery guys for me, they did an excellent job."

After he finished speaking, Hammer immediately changed the radio frequency and then hurriedly said, "I’m going to the airport for close-up observation of the damage, you guys don’t have to worry, I’m going."

Hammer had just finished speaking when Tarta’s voice came through the intercom, "I’m closest to the airport, also, I’m already close enough to see the fire point, you don’t need to come over."

Hammer was furious when he heard this and angrily said, "What are you doing near the airport!"

"None of your business."

"Bastard! You shouldn’t be near there, get back to your position, I’m going to the airport to observe the damage, you bastard..."

Swearing hurriedly, Hammer frantically packed up his camera, shoved it into a bag full of miscellaneous junk, and immediately started running towards the airport.

Tarta should be at least four kilometers away, but he had sneaked near the airport. Wasn’t he afraid of being blown up by the missile? Moreover, if he really sneaked into the airport, then what was the point of Hammer, originally closest to the airport as an observer?

The deviation of ballistic missiles can be shockingly large sometimes, aiming at an airport but landing two kilometers away is quite normal. Gao Yang worried the missiles didn’t blow up the airport but killed his own people, so the order was to observe results from at least two kilometers away. But clearly, Tarta didn’t care about that; he might be very close to the airport, even sneaking directly inside.

Swearing incoherently, Hammer continued running towards the airport.

Hammer’s great name is Alesi Mogunov, but this is not his real name. He has even forgotten his real name, as it’s something unused for decades, something he’ll never use again, so why bother remembering it?

He received the nickname Hammer, slowly replacing all the names assigned by the organization, and of course, there was a reason for this.

Initially, Black Demon was a team under the KGB. When it was first formed, the team was built as a tactical unit to engage in action-oriented tasks like fighting and killing, maybe some field assignments, or silent assassinations. Other tasks, like gathering intelligence, were the domain of professional intelligence officers; Black Demon members neither needed nor could do them because that would be overstepping.

But later, everything changed. The goal of forming Black Demon suddenly shifted from being simply an action team to becoming a collective of geniuses who had to know and understand everything. As a result, the first batch of recruited Black Demon personnel was rapidly eliminated, dispatched to other units before they even completed initial training.

Only the best were kept in Black Demon, and Hammer was the only one from the first batch who stayed.

Hammer was trained solely as a tactical unit member, but when Black Demon’s objectives changed, he was the only one who could keep up. Thus, Hammer was Black Demon’s most senior member, without exception.

Even though Hammer kept pace with Black Demon, he remained an anomaly within because his methods were too clean, too direct. He had countless ways to complete a mission but always preferred the simplest method.

Just like killing someone: one could use poison, a gun, or hands to strangle the target alive. Yet, Hammer liked using a hammer to smash the target to death.

In Black Demon, there was another who liked using a hammer to kill, and that was Tarta. But Tarta merely liked it, while Hammer was devoted.

After competing with Tarta once and winning, Hammer received the moniker Hammer, and has used it ever since.

Hammer earned the name not just because he enjoyed and was skilled with a hammer, but also because his approach to problems was hammer-like: hit any issue with a hammer, as the hammer’s job was to pound down problems.

But after beating Tarta in a contest, Hammer never again got the chance for field assignments, as his character wasn’t suitable for them. From then on, he truly became a pure tactical team member, sticking solely to fighting and killing tasks.

The decision came from Yarebin, and Hammer never questioned any of Yarebin’s decisions; he didn’t dare to. He genuinely believed Yarebin’s decisions were never wrong.

However, just because Yarebin’s decisions were right didn’t mean Hammer felt he was inferior to other Black Demon members. Quite the opposite, he believed he was better than everyone else.

Even if he wasn’t better than everyone, he surely was better than Tarta.

How could he lose to Tarta? Even if it was merely about confirming damage effects, how could he let Tarta get ahead?

Hammer felt he needed to hurry.

He was already close enough to the airport to see a building missing half its side, but it was a transport plane on fire, not the airport’s fuel depot, which Hammer had hoped for.

The extent of the damage on small targets was still unknown; he needed to get closer to find out. But regardless of what specific damage was done to the enemy, it was already confirmed the missiles accurately hit the target.

Hammer felt those Missile Troopers had done an excellent job, worthy of their Soviet training, like him, never losing their skills over the years away from combat.

But beyond the satisfaction, thinking about how Tarta might already have sneaked into the airport drained Hammer’s good mood. He decided he must infiltrate the airport, despite his outfit being unsuitable it didn’t matter—he had ways.
