Gao Yang’s heart felt like it had just been brutally squeezed by an invisible hand.
"Wizard and Prince are both dead? Is the intel accurate?"
"Nate personally called Yake. He actually wanted to call you, but Yake hid the news from Rabbit and only told me. I knew you were on the plane and also knew how to reach the plane, so I notified you immediately."
In just a few sentences, Little Donnie explained why he had called the plane, but what Gao Yang couldn’t figure out was why Nate had called Yake.
"What were Nate’s exact words?"
"He said Angel had been attacked, Lilia was killed in the engagement, he failed to fulfill his promise, he was sorry, and that was it."
"That’s all? Then how did you get the details on Angel’s losses?"
"Yake contacted Angel’s Intelligence Officer and got the exact casualty numbers and current situation. They’re still fighting. The Donetsk militias have started infighting, Angel launched a counterattack, and right now both sides are using artillery and engaging in large-scale firefights in retaliation. The fighting is fierce."
Gao Yang took a deep breath and said, "How did it suddenly blow up like this? Did Angel’s Intelligence Officer say anything?"
"No detailed explanation. The speculation is that Angel developed too fast and made Russia feel threatened. To ensure Donetsk, even all of Eastern Ukraine, stays firmly in Russian hands, they launched an attack to try to wipe Angel out."
Gao Yang clenched his fist. He’d wanted to smash something, but when he realized the only thing within reach was the aircraft’s instrument panels, he managed to pull his punch back in time.
"Angel got ruined because of me..."
Gao Yang let out a long sigh; he was in real pain.
If Angel had kept growing the way they had before, they’d still have been a thorn in Russia’s side, but it wouldn’t have led to an attack this fast. After all, Angel was ultimately just a militia group of a few thousand; to Russia they were still far from a major threat.
But Gao Yang had a professional team under him, providing Angel with a lot of expert advice, so Angel had now driven onto the express lane of rapid development.
It wasn’t that Angel could build Eastern Ukraine into something spectacular, but that Angel would quickly expand and strengthen itself. Russia couldn’t stomach that and struck hard to cut off Angel’s path of growth.
Angel was finished, because no matter how strong Angel got, there was no way they could be a match for Russia. Angel was doomed.
Gao Yang held his forehead with his hand, his face twisted in pain, and said, "Little Donnie, keep this under wraps for now, don’t tell Rabbit. I’ll talk to him myself. Let me handle this."
"Okay. Is it going to be very troublesome?"
Gao Yang sighed and said, "Very troublesome, so I have to go to Ukraine immediately. Tell Morgan I’ll be back later than planned. I’ll explain everything to him in detail when I can. That’s it for now."
Gao Yang handed the headset back to the copilot, signaling he could hang up, then asked in a low voice, "Can we use the satellite phone on the plane right now?"
The captain said, "No problem. As long as your satellite phone has a signal, use it as you like."
Gao Yang exhaled and said, "Where are we now?"
"We’re over the Atlantic Ocean, not too far from the European Continent."
"Do we have enough fuel to reach Kiev?"
"Enough."
"Good. Change course to Kiev."
"Yes, sir."
Gao Yang left the cockpit, casually found a seat, and sat down. Looking at Joseph with a bleak expression, he said, "We’ve got a problem."
Joseph said quietly, "Do we really have to go to Kiev right away? Don’t tell me you’re planning to go to Donetsk too? That’s way too dangerous."
Gao Yang waved his hand weakly and said, "Danger or not, we’re going. Otherwise Angel is completely done. I know Nate. He’s not the type to back off on his own, and he’s definitely not the kind to just let it go because people died. He’ll drag Angel and his entire organization down the road to annihilation."
Joseph said in confusion, "Nate should be a rational guy. Everyone knows going up against Russia is a dead end. There are chances elsewhere, but that’s Eastern Ukraine. Nate has zero chance there—doesn’t he get that?"
"He gets it, of course he gets it, but he can’t turn back..."
Gao Yang let out a long sigh, utterly helpless, and said, "Everyone’s dreams have come this far. They can already see the hope of success. Even if he knows he can’t win, how can Nate just let go? How can he bear to let go? So he has no way to turn back. If this keeps going, Angel will be wiped out very soon. So we have to move fast, we have to get to Donetsk as soon as possible!"
Joseph said helplessly, "Will it still make any difference?"
Gao Yang said quietly, "I don’t know. I’ll see if I can make that mad wolf Nate turn back. I have to try."
With that, Gao Yang turned his phone back on and called Uriyangko.
"Uri! Angel’s fighting the Russians now. Heavy casualties. Did you get the news?"
Uriyangko was even more agitated than Gao Yang. He said anxiously, "Of course I got it. The fighting is extremely intense right now. F**k! I just supplied Angel with a batch of weapons, and that bastard Nate hasn’t paid me yet!"
Gao Yang said impatiently, "Can it be stopped? Can we get them to stop shooting first?"
"Stopped? How the hell do you stop it? Nate’s gone insane!"
Gao Yang said urgently, "F**k! Mediate, damn it! Your connections are huge, get someone to mediate. Stop the fighting first, then talk. If they keep going like this, there won’t even be a chance to pull back."
Uriyangko gave a bitter laugh and said, "Mediate? Don’t joke with me. I’m an arms dealer. I’m supposed to go mediate a war? Okay, no jokes—I really don’t know how to mediate a fight like this. I’ve got no experience. And besides, do you really think this situation can be mediated now? Forget it. Start thinking about how to reduce the losses and how to collect the bodies for those bastards in Angel!"
Gao Yang let out a powerless groan.
Strictly speaking, if he wanted Angel to cool down and not rush into a war with Russia, Gao Yang should’ve called Nate. But he couldn’t even be bothered, because he knew it would be pointless.
Wizard was dead. Nate had always been half-crazy to begin with, and even if he hadn’t been, he’d be completely insane now. A Nate who’d gone totally berserk—Gao Yang could already imagine the scene without having to think about it.
"All right, then do you know how the fighting started? How far has it gone now?"
"A militia unit suddenly opened artillery fire on Angel’s positions, directly blasting the command post. Almost everyone inside was wiped out. Angel immediately counterattacked and engaged that militia in a firefight. By now, the territory between the two factions has turned into one big battlefield. This was a sneak attack from friendly forces, so you know what that means. In the first wave, Angel took massive casualties. The worst part is, once Russia has decided to move, this is obviously just the beginning. Other factions have already started mobilizing troops. No question about it, Angel is going to be completely annihilated very soon."
Gao Yang felt a headache coming on. He trembled as he said, "It’s over. A shameless sneak attack from their own side... there’s no way Nate is going to compromise now."
Uriyangko said helplessly, "Exactly. Get ready to collect bodies for Angel, if you think it’s worth the effort."
