Mercenary’s War

Chapter 2628 - 2603: Please Leave

If Nate were furious or heartbroken, it would be easier to manage. But Nate happened to be the one thing Gao Yang feared most: indifferent.

Can he really feel nothing?

How could it be possible? Six people he was closest to suddenly died. Even if he were a heartless scoundrel to the extreme, he should show at least a little difference, right? Even if it’s feigned, he should pretend to care.

But Nate remained as calm as ever, not even changing his habit of pompously putting a few fresh flowers in his coffee.

Is this a time to show off, to pretend, to remain calm?

Clearly not.

So Nate is in a bad way now, and he’s definitely unveiling a big move.

It’s not holding back a big move; he’s already making one.

When the Iron Madonna ambushed and trapped them in the building, nearly wiping out the whole group, Nate didn’t even act this way because it was just a surprise attack.

Win or lose, such things are common among military strategists. Being ambushed and suffering losses cannot be avoided, even if sometimes the casualties are heavy; it’s merely the failure of a battle.

This time is different, though. This time, Angel has been deprived of all hope. It’s not a simple defeat in a battle; it’s the complete collapse of a lifelong plan. Russia has stepped in, and Angel’s dreams have shattered.

So, Gao Yang now dares to assert that Nate has lost heart.

When the heart dies, the person is not far behind.

Gao Yang dismally sat back down on the chair and said, "Where are the others? Nate, can you tell me, where are the others, all of them!"

Nate looked at Gao Yang, and at last, slowly shook his head, saying in a deep voice, "Ram, you sure have a lot to worry about."

What can Gao Yang say? Nothing he says would matter.

Almost pleading, Gao Yang shouted, "Nate! Turn back! If we continue like this, we’re all going to die. Can we keep at least a seed, call everyone back, and preserve a bit of hope?"

Nate smiled and turned his head to the side, saying, "Ram, it’s not for you to tell me this."

Just then, Joseph came in, holding a coffee pot in one hand and two cups in the other.

He placed the cups on the table and filled Nate’s cup with coffee as Gao Yang noted Joseph’s gaze.

Joseph’s eyes were complex, filled with pity, urgency, and concern.

Seeing Joseph’s expression, Gao Yang suddenly said, "What’s inside? Tell me what’s inside!"

Joseph looked toward Nate, but Nate said expressionlessly, "Bodies."

After quietly saying "bodies," Nate looked at Joseph and said somewhat discontentedly, "You didn’t bring the sugar."

Gao Yang suddenly stood up and rushed to the inner room in two steps.

The space wasn’t large but not small either, with white sheets covering the empty room. However, beneath six of these sheets were something covered, which had already been stained with blood.

Gao Yang walked inside, took a quick breath, and then realized his trip here might be in vain, highly likely.

The bodies covered by sheets could only be corpses, but judging by their varied sizes, without needing to uncover them, one could understand they were remnants.

"There’s nothing to see. This day would have come sooner or later."

Nate followed Gao Yang into the room. His expression was still very calm, as he walked straight toward one of the bodies covered by a sheet and lifted the cloth.

Nate finally let out a sigh, and very sadly said, "You asked me to keep her safe. I’m sorry, I couldn’t fulfill my promise. I’m sorry."

Beneath the sheet lay Lilia’s body.

Lilia’s body was intact, except for a big hole in her neck. It’s evident that most of her blood had sprayed out, which made Lilia’s face very pale.

Lilia’s face could be seen, as it had been cleaned, but just her face was cleaned. Her braid was soaked in blood and still emitted a nauseating stench.

Lilia was beautiful, but a body dead in war could never be truly beautiful.

Gao Yang was used to seeing corpses, but he was used to seeing enemy bodies. Seeing Lilia’s body, he found himself somewhat unable to bear it.

Closing his eyes, gathering himself for a moment, Gao Yang sighed, "Let me say goodbye to them."

He reached out and lifted another sheet, recognizing the person beneath, or rather, the corpse.

"Farewell, Prince, I’m sorry I took your night vision device, sorry..."

The second body was only half, the lower half. The torso above was gone, and the remaining lower half was tattered. Gao Yang sighed and said in a low voice, "Farewell, brother, farewell."

Gao Yang went through all six bodies, then realized something was amiss, so he looked at Nate and asked, "Wizard, which one is Wizard?"

Nate still answered faintly, "Vanished. A shell exploded beside him, leaving nothing behind."

Gao Yang held his head with a hand and then released it, looking at Nate, helplessly saying, "You can’t let those left become like this, Nate! Stop! We both know there’s no way to win, don’t let everyone become corpses."

Nate nodded and then pointed to the door outside, saying, "Already said goodbye, let’s continue having coffee."

Gao Yang, despondent, returned to his seat and, looking at the still emotionless Nate, trembled as he asked, "Can you drink it?"

Joseph put down the sugar cubes.

"Thank you."

After thanking Joseph, Nate dropped the sugar cubes one by one into his cup, then looked at Gao Yang and slowly said, "The sudden attack by the Government Forces, was it your doing?"

Gao Yang chuckled bitterly and said, "Yes, I promised Poloneshenko the 15th Independent Artillery Regiment would return to the ranks of Government Forces."

Nate nodded and said in a deep voice, "Good idea, Poloneshenko must agree to that condition."

Gao Yang said solemnly, "It’s not too late, call the others over, it’s time to end this, you can’t..."

"Hard to believe."

Nate suddenly sighed, interrupting Gao Yang. He continued emotionally, "I first met you in Somalia, you wounded my two snipers. Back then, you were only with a small mercenary group, very small, but now, you can make Ukraine’s president act upon your commands. I must admit, you are indeed impressive."

Gao Yang’s face went cold, and he said indifferently, "This shows I’m always right, and you are always wrong."

Nate suddenly laughed, then looked at Gao Yang and said, "I know what you want to say, know what you want to do, but don’t you understand?"

"Understand what?"

Nate lost his smile, his face turning very serious, "We’ve always fought for the sake of fighting, our end can only be dying on the battlefield, and the time is now. Therefore, please say no more. After we finish our coffee, take that body and leave, thank you."
