Gao Yang completely understood why at this critical moment, Nate was not commanding the troops but was waiting here to have coffee with him.
As for why the Angel Mercenary Corps only used its own forces for combat, conducting small-scale attack operations without deploying the army for continued warfare, it was because they lost control over the army.
There is no greater sorrow than a dead heart, shattered hopes, allies turning against each other — these can be endured, but when one’s own army chooses to betray, Nate could not bear it.
"This is Ukraine, this is Eastern Ukraine. Your soldiers are Ukrainians. Can you say your soldiers betrayed you? Maybe, because they chose loyalty to their country and nation, not allegiance to you."
Gao Yang sincerely said to Nate, "The Eastern Ukrainians and Russia are one. You wanted to give them a third option, but they do not want to take the third road. Nate, your soldiers simply didn’t choose you, but did not betray you, because those ordinary people who took up arms did so to defend their homes, not to fulfill your ambition."
Nate suddenly looked at Gao Yang and shouted fiercely, "Disobeying a commander’s explicit orders — if that’s not betrayal, then what is?"
Gao Yang shouted, "They are fighting to protect their homes, not to be loyal to you! You need to understand one thing! You betrayed the people who followed you, who were willing to give their lives for you. You! You are the betrayer, not them!"
Nate was completely enraged. He strode forward to Gao Yang, grabbed Gao Yang’s collar with a grinning face, and snarled, "You bastard, what did you say?"
Gao Yang looked directly at Nate’s red eyes and slowly but firmly said, "You! You are the betrayer. You betrayed those who followed you!"
"Shut up!"
"What are you saying, bastard!"
People from the Angel shouted out, but despite their anger, they did not immediately act, since the relationship between Satan and Angel was tangled. No matter how unpleasant Gao Yang’s words were, they could still distinguish right from wrong.
Nate gritted his teeth and said, "Fine! I’ll wait for your explanation."
With a solemn face, Gao Yang sharply said, "Why did your people pick up guns? Because they want to resist! I’ve made it very clear: they fight to protect their homes and freedom. Why do they follow you? Because you can lead them to victory, but nothing more, Nate. Can you not understand such a simple truth?
Your soldiers need a leader who can guide them along their chosen path, do better. Back when their choice was aligned with yours, they were willing to obey all your commands, even if it meant dying! Knowing that people would die wasn’t a concern because it was a path they chose!
But now, it’s you, you want to lead them down a different path. Your soldiers want to stick to their original path. Is there anything wrong with that? You want to lead them elsewhere — tell me, Nate, who betrayed whom?"
Nate was still extremely angry, but he couldn’t shout at Gao Yang anymore because Gao Yang was speaking the truth.
Eastern Ukrainians took up arms to become militias, not to satisfy Nate’s ambition. Nate only gained the loyalty of an army because he conformed to the tide.
Without much persuasion, Angel obtained this mighty force. Why? Wasn’t it because Angel could lead them to victory?
Now Nate wants to go against the tide and war with other militias of Eastern Ukraine and Russia — how could he still have his subordinates’ support?
Now Gao Yang found the crux of the problem and believed it would be easy to handle it since he pinpointed the issue.
"Wake up, Nate. Your wish or ambition can’t be realized on Ukrainian soil. There is no betrayal; it’s just that everyone is taking their own path. Stop now, while there’s still time."
Nate finally let go of Gao Yang’s collar and smoothed out Gao Yang’s clothes as he did so.
Gao Yang earnestly said, "I know what you want. There is an opportunity, really there is. I can help you. If you need money, I can lend it to you. Really, I can even help you pick your targets. Ukraine is impossible, but many other countries are waiting for you to conquer. How about South Sudan?"
Nate sighed, gently patting Gao Yang’s shoulder twice, then calmly said, "Enough. You’ve already wasted a lot of my time. Don’t say anymore."
Gao Yang angrily exclaimed, "What else do you want to do? Do you insist on carrying out a suicidal attack, letting everyone die for your ambition?"
"No! This is our choice!"
Someone behind Gao Yang murmured, and Gao Yang turned around and shouted, "That’s bullshit! You’re all a bunch of fools! Fools! Sons of bitches! Fools, a gang of fools!"
"Enough!"
Nate snapped and pointed to the room where bodies were placed, saying solemnly, "There lies our destination, all of us. As warriors, living with humiliation is worse than dying in battle."
After speaking, Nate solemnly said, "I was going to lead Angel to attack the enemy command center, but you came, so I stayed to have a last cup of coffee with you. Now that the coffee is finished and the words are spoken, please don’t delay me anymore."
After quickly finishing, Nate hesitated but finally said, "No more preaching, it’s enough. Thank you for coming here to say these things to us, although it’s tiresome. However, considering you’re the only one in this world who would say such things, thank you. As for Can Opener, we were supposed to be together, but he’s not dead yet. Watching him die or me shooting him isn’t ideal — you take him away. When he wakes up, no matter if he scolds you or thanks you, that’s between you two."
"Can Opener considers you a friend. Friends save friends as they should, take him away."
"That’s right, take him away. This guy has a foul mouth and talks a lot. We won’t wait for him on the road to Hell."
"Try to save him, thanks."
One person after another started speaking from behind, and Gao Yang trembled with anger, shouting, "You’re forcing me, you’re all forcing me!"
"Alright, the blood vessel is stitched, but he needs blood transfusions and further medical care. He won’t die, Ram, Can Opener is yours to handle."
Sirte’s injuries were finally treated, Nate waved his hand sharply and commanded, "Next target! Move out!"
"Wait!"
Gao Yang shouted, staring firmly at Nate and solemnly said, "Tell me your targets. If you all die in battle, at least I can collect your corpses and send you here for a final burial. So, where are you going?"
