Gao Yang pressed the envelope with his hand, his face twisted, as if he had been sold out by Nate, rather than having received all the assets left by the Angels.
"Nate, you bastard, if you want to die, go and die. Why leave me this junk? Do I look like I need this little bit of money!"
Knowing full well that Nate couldn’t hear him, Gao Yang couldn’t help but curse.
Nate was bent on dying, and Gao Yang really couldn’t stop him. He could only watch helplessly as Nate led the Angels to their end, to their destruction.
If it ends here, then it ends. We’ve all saved each other’s lives, no one owes anyone. If someone really wants to die, don’t stop them.
Gao Yang had already tried his best. He didn’t want to see the Angels perish, but he truly tried his best. If the Angels disappear from here on, no one can blame him for anything. At least, Gao Yang had no guilty conscience.
But Nate insisted on leaving all the inheritance to Gao Yang.
Nate’s popularity was really bad, and the Angels really had no friends. If they were to die, there really would be no one else to send them off.
However, receiving the Angels’ bequeathal would make Gao Yang feel guilty. Reflecting on how he failed to stop Nate from leading the Angels to death, he would regret and blame himself. For the rest of Gao Yang’s life, thoughts of the Angels would bring regret and self-reproach.
Gao Yang didn’t want this, so he was truly angry.
But anger was just temporary, because from now on, Nate would be gone. What’s the point of losing your temper at a dead person who’s not even around?
Slowly, Gao Yang moved his hand off the envelope, then let out a helpless sigh, turning to the intelligence officer with a desolate expression: "Tell me what’s here."
Gao Yang himself opened the envelope and took out a hard-covered booklet, flipping through it to find everything in German.
"What’s this?"
"This is commercial real estate on a street in Berlin, under a fabricated business company name. This forged business company was registered using a fictional person’s name, all the fake personal information is here. With these ID documents, you can sell this commercial property."
"How much is it worth?"
"About 20 million euros, it can generate about 600,000 euros in rent revenue every year. This property is currently managed by a real estate service company that transfers the rent directly to the designated account. This property is jointly owned by the Angels, and the rent collected is used to pay for disabled members living expenses upon their withdrawal."
Gao Yang tossed the hard-covered booklet on the table, and asked irritably, "Anything else?"
"A coffee plantation, which is our colonel’s private property. He has completed all necessary transfer procedures himself. You just need to sign, and the plantation will belong to you."
"Is that it?"
"There are also some bearer stocks, all stored in a house in Munich. Here’s the house key. Based on current stock prices, these stocks are worth about 30 million euros, and the annual dividends and interest are about 1 million euros. Similarly, this money is used to support the living expenses of Angels members who have withdrawn due to disability."
"Anything else?"
"Then there’s the money borrowed from you. About 20 million remains unspent. That’s all; clearly, we’re already bankrupt and can’t repay your loan."
The intelligence officer lowered his head in shame.
Gao Yang, annoyed, said, "Angel Mercenary Corps, Angels! You’ve got only this much left after all these years?"
"Regrettably, yes. We’ve invested every penny we could into this, and only the funds prepared for disabled members haven’t been touched."
Gao Yang pointed to the items on the table, surprised, "So, I’m supposed to support your disabled personnel for Nate?"
The intelligence officer looked even more ashamed. He lowered his head and said softly, "We only have four disabled members, including Can Opener, just five in total. And two of them were harmed by you. You just need to pay fifty thousand euros annually to their accounts, so there’s still a lot left over."
Gao Yang slapped the document hard several times, angrily, "Just this little money, and I have to clean up after Angels’ messes? Are you guys crazy? Are you crazy! My money’s just gone like that? I earn tens of thousands of dollars a minute. I’m acting like a nanny, cleaning up after you and supporting the injured!"
The intelligence officer quietly said, "Sorry, there’s no one else to entrust this to. Nate only trusts you, we... also trust you. There really is no one else... truly no one..."
"What about you? You’re alive, you’re standing right in front of me."
The intelligence officer raised his head, looking at Gao Yang with fervent and determined eyes unique to a martyr, and said with a deep voice, "Angels have no deserters!"
Gao Yang ruffled his hair messily, then pointed at the intelligence officer and said, "You know, you guys have square heads, really. Look in the mirror; your heads are squared. This is Germany’s tragedy, with capable people’s brains being too square and dying early."
The intelligence officer felt indignant, but military habits kept him from retorting or cursing back at Gao Yang.
Gao Yang said helplessly, "You guys, just going to die like that, all dumb like your mother. If it’s necessary to die, I wouldn’t say anything. How can you fight a war without casualties? It’s no big deal if people die in war. But dying meaninglessly, that’s stupid! Idiots!"
The intelligence officer didn’t want to hear Gao Yang’s ramblings anymore. He said with frost on his face, "I have another task, to help you complete troop movements. The surrender of the 15th Independent Artillery Regiment needs my arrangement. As for the surrender of other troops, someone has to give the orders."
Gao Yang said irritably, "Why? Is this what Nate meant by protecting my reputation? I’m a person of my word. I promised the 15th Independent Artillery Regiment would surrender to Government Forces, and he’s letting you arrange it?"
"Yes."
"I’m just baffled. You’re willing to have betraying troops surrender, rather than sending them to fight the enemy to the last? More deaths mean more revenge, right? Doesn’t that fit Nate’s character?"
The intelligence officer finally couldn’t hold back and shouted sharply, "Enough! Please don’t insult our commander’s character! It’s irreversible, having soldiers die meaninglessly in battle is not something a commander should do. We are professional soldiers; please don’t insult our character!"
Gao Yang sighed, looking at the intelligence officer and said, "Others understand it, but when it comes to themselves, they don’t. What’s up with you guys? Alright, help me contact the commander of the 15th Independent Artillery Regiment. I’ll talk to them."
As the intelligence officer began preparing to contact the people of the 15th Independent Artillery Regiment, Gao Yang couldn’t help but ask, "Do you think Nate and the others will come back?"
