Chapter 33 - Turning point

Chapter 33: Chapter 33 - Turning point

Detective Jake Miller sat inside his car across from Carl’s mansion, continuing his investigation.

He didn’t have to.

Technically, the case was over, and with his suspension still in effect, no one expected him to keep digging. But after several days of boredom, he had decided to find out what had really happened.

He was convinced he had already figured out most of the story.

Tap. Tap. Tap.

Someone knocked on his driver’s side window despite the heavily tinted glass.

"Sir, can we help you?" a man asked through the partially lowered window. An earpiece rested in one ear, identifying him as one of the Turner family’s security guards.

"I’m Detective Jake Miller."

Normally, he would’ve shown his badge, but it had been confiscated when he was suspended.

"I’m here on Mrs. Clara Turner’s authorization. Your team should’ve been informed."

The guard studied him carefully, silently comparing his face with whatever information he had received.

"Understood," the man finally said. "But please don’t get too close to the property. Are you carrying a weapon?"

"No. I’m unarmed."

The guard glanced inside the vehicle one last time, gave a short nod, then walked away.

Jake rolled his window back up and settled into his seat to wait.

A few minutes later, two vehicles pulled out of the estate.

One belonged to Carl.

Jake wasn’t interested in Carl.

He started his engine and pulled in behind the second vehicle.

Lucinda’s.

"Let’s see where you’re going," he muttered.

The first time Jake had met Lucinda, something about her had immediately bothered him.

Then Clara had described her as kind, caring, and trustworthy.

Oddly enough, that only made Jake more suspicious.

His instincts told him no one was that perfect.

People who looked harmless often had the most to hide.

About ten minutes later, Jake frowned as Lucinda’s SUV turned into another familiar driveway.

Clara’s house.

He immediately picked up his phone.

"Hello, Mrs. Turner. Are you home right now?" Jake asked.

"No. I’m at Ashley’s apartment. Why?"

"I’m parked outside your house," Jake replied. "Your sister-in-law just arrived."

Clara sounded surprised.

Jake decided to stay where he was.

If Lucinda came back out, he’d continue following her.

One hour passed.

Then another.

Lucinda’s vehicle never moved.

Jake rubbed his tired eyes before calling Clara again.

"I’ve been outside your house for over two hours," he said. "Your sister-in-law still hasn’t left."

Almost as if on cue, Lucinda’s SUV finally pulled out of the driveway.

Another car followed immediately behind it.

Dylan’s.

Jake narrowed his eyes.

Now the pieces were beginning to form a larger picture.

The missing ten million dollars.

Ashley’s kidnapping.

Clara’s marriage to Dylan.

Carl.

Lucinda.

Dylan.

Somehow, the three of them were connected.

What Jake couldn’t understand was how.

Maybe he was looking at two completely different cases that only happened to overlap.

Maybe Lucinda and Dylan had nothing to do with Ashley’s kidnapping or the missing money.

Maybe they were hiding something entirely different.

He kept following them.

About twenty minutes later, both vehicles stopped in front of a massive downtown office building.

Jake immediately recognized it.

One of the largest law firms in the country.

What are you two doing here? he wondered.

Nearly an hour later, Lucinda and Dylan finally walked back outside.

Each of them carried a large sealed envelope.

They got into separate cars.

Jake tailed them again.

This time, both of them drove straight to Turner Corporation.

Jake remained parked for a moment.

Then he made a U-turn.

If they had left the law firm with those envelopes...

That was where he needed to be.

He drove back to the building.

He knew he wasn’t exactly welcome there.

One of the firm’s clients was the very reason he had been suspended.

Jake stepped inside anyway.

He knew the place well.

"Well, well..." a voice called out.

"If it isn’t Detective Jake Miller."

"I thought I gave you a few months of vacation."

Jake looked over.

A man in his fifties approached, wearing an expensive tailor-made suit that probably cost more than Jake’s monthly salary.

He smiled.

"Mr. Gregory."

"How’s your client’s nose doing?"

Gregory’s smile faded slightly.

A few months earlier, Jake had investigated the assault and sexual abuse of a minor.

The suspect had been a wealthy businessman represented by Gregory’s firm.

During the investigation, Jake had uncovered several videos showing the man abusing multiple underage girls.

Despite the evidence, the defense successfully argued that their client suffered from severe mental illness.

To make matters worse, Jake had obtained part of the evidence illegally.

Instead of prison, the man received only four years in a psychiatric hospital.

After the verdict, the suspect had laughed in Jake’s face and bragged that he’d be free before long.

Jake had snapped.

He punched him hard enough to break his nose.

That single punch had nearly cost Jake his career.

Only the intervention of his captain had reduced the punishment to a suspension instead of dismissal.

"What brings you here, Jake?" Gregory asked.

The two men had known each other for years.

"Can we talk somewhere private?"

Gregory hesitated for a second before nodding.

"Come with me."

They walked into his office and closed the door.

"I’m investigating a kidnapping and a major embezzlement case," Jake said.

"I happened to see two people connected to my investigation come into your office earlier today."

"I’d like to know why they were here."

Gregory sighed.

"I know exactly who you’re talking about."

"But I’m afraid I can’t tell you anything."

"They specifically instructed us not to disclose any information about their visit."

Lucinda and Dylan arrived at Turner Corporation later than usual.

They stepped into the elevator together.

Just before the doors closed, a third person entered.

Clovis Turner.

"Good morning, Father-in-law," Lucinda said cheerfully.

She waved the envelope in her hand with a playful grin.

"Care to guess what’s inside?"

Clovis didn’t even look at it.

"Don’t worry," Lucinda continued.

"I’ll be gone soon."

"And our agreement still stands."

The elevator doors opened on Dylan and Lucinda’s floor.

As they stepped out, Clovis finally spoke.

"I suggest that once you and your bastard leave..."

"...you never come back."

"Because next time, your little blackmail won’t work."

The doors began to close.

Lucinda watched the elevator disappear with an amused smile.

"I’ve always thought he was incredibly sexy."

Dylan stared at her in disbelief.

"You’re completely insane."

"Why would you provoke him now?"

"We’re about to get everything we wanted."

Lucinda smiled without a trace of concern.

"Relax."

"With what we have on him..."

"He can’t do a thing."

----------

By the end of the day, Jake hadn’t uncovered anything particularly useful, so he decided it was finally time to take a break.

Knock. Knock. Knock.

A few seconds later, a woman with shoulder-length black hair, about 5’4" (1.63 m), opened the door.

"Jake? What are you doing here?" she asked, clearly surprised and kinda annoyed.

"Hey, Katie," Jake replied with a small smile. "I came to see my daughter, of course."

Without another word, Katie immediately started closing the door.

Jake quickly slipped his foot between the door and the frame before it could shut.

"You know she’s at my sister’s house today," Katie said coldly. "You’re just here to annoy me."

"Can’t we have a civilized conversation for once?" Jake asked as he gently pushed the door open and walked inside without waiting for permission.

"Get out of my house right now, or I’m calling the police!" Katie snapped.

"That works for me," Jake replied with a grin. "I am the police."

"Not at the moment," Katie shot back. "You’re suspended, remember?"

Jake ignored the comment.

He casually walked into the kitchen, opened the refrigerator, grabbed a beer, then made himself comfortable on the couch.

A wedding video was already playing on the television.

"Oh..." Jake said softly with a nostalgic smile. "You’re watching our wedding video. I haven’t seen this in years."

Katie immediately grabbed the remote and turned the TV off.

"I said get out of my house!" she shouted, her voice trembling with both anger and sadness. "Just leave!"

Jake slowly stood up.

Instead of heading for the door, he walked toward her.

He reached out, hoping to comfort her, but Katie slapped him across the face.

"So... you’re still that angry at me," Jake said quietly.

He looked at her with eyes that were almost filled with tears.

"Go ahead. Hit me again if it’ll make you feel better."

He paused before continuing.

"But I’m not leaving... I’m never walking out of your life again."

Jake gently tried to pull Katie into his arms.

At first, she resisted.

Then, after a few long seconds, her body finally relaxed.

She let herself be held.

No matter how hard she tried to move on, Jake was still the person she thought about whenever she felt lonely.

"You say that now..." Katie whispered, barely loud enough to hear.

"But the moment you get your badge back in a few months... you’ll make the exact same mistake all over again."

Jake slowly shook his head.

"I’m not getting my badge back, Katie."

She looked up at him, confused.

"What do you mean?"

"I’ve decided to quit the police force."

"What?" Katie exclaimed, immediately pulling away from him.

"Have you lost your mind?"

"What are you going to do if you quit? Do you have any idea how hard it is to find a job that pays as well as being a police detective these days?"

Jake smiled reassuringly.

"Relax."

"I’ve already found another job."

"A friend offered me a position as a bodyguard."

"The pay’s actually pretty good."

Jake had already accepted Clara’s offer to work as her personal bodyguard in exchange for everything he had done to help her and Ashley.

Katie stared at him for several silent seconds.

"Are you really sure about this?" she finally asked, her voice much softer than before.

Jake nodded without hesitation.

"I’ve never been more sure of anything."

He stepped closer once again.

This time, Katie didn’t move away.

Jake gently wrapped his arms around her waist and looked into her eyes.

Then he leaned in and kissed her.

Katie kissed him back.

Without realizing it, they slowly stumbled backward together until they both fell onto the couch. Jake quickly pulled off his T-shirt, and Katie did the same. Jake lowered his mouth to Katie’s breasts, drawing soft moans of pleasure from her as she reached down to unbuckle his belt and unzip his jeans.

Jake stepped back to take off his jeans. Katie, who was wearing only a pair of panties, slipped them off with ease. She was soon standing completely naked, her legs slightly apart, revealing her pink pussy with a small patch of hair above it.

She gently rubbed her sex. It had been a long time since she had last been intimate with a man, and raising a child left her with little time to satisfy herself.

Jake finally managed to get completely undressed and rubbed his penis until it was fully erect. He then lay down on top of Katie and kissed her. Katie spat into her hand and used it to moisten Jake’s penis.

She rubbed Jake’s penis against her clitoris for a moment before slowly guiding it inside her wet pussy.

She let out a loud moan as he entered her. The sensations she had missed for so long finally washed over her body. Jake began to move his hips, thrusting back and forth inside his baby Mama’s wet vagina.

"Ahhh, that feels so good," Katie moaned as Jake’s penis pounded into her vagina.

Jake kept going, thrusting back and forth for more than a minute before pulling out and turning Katie over.

He entered her again, reaching around to rub Katie between her legs with one hand. Her legs trembled with excitement until she could no longer keep her balance as a powerful orgasm overtook her.

She let herself fall onto the couch, and Jake lay down behind her, continuing to take her from behind while rubbing her vagina with one hand and occasionally kissing the back of her neck.

Katie moaned loudly from the intensity of the moment.

"This feels so good," Katie said again, closing her eyes and enjoying the sensations. A minute later, Jake held her close and came inside her.

"You’re crazy, I’m ovulating," Katie said with a laugh.

"Either way, maybe it’s time our daughter had a little brother," Jake replied.
