Chapter 37: Chapter 37 - The last taste of happiness
"Are you ready?" Catherine asked, one hand resting on the conference room door.
Clara let out a faint smile.
"Ready? I was ready to get divorced on the day we got married."
Without waiting another second, she pushed the door open.
Dylan was already seated at the far end of the table with his attorney, Gregory. Dressed in an immaculate tailored suit, he looked unusually cheerful, almost as if this were a celebration rather than the end of a marriage.
"My dear wife finally decided to honor us with her presence," Dylan said with a smug smile. "How long has it been since we last saw each other? Three weeks?"
Clara pulled out the chair directly across from him.
"I honestly don’t know. I’d forgotten you existed. Let’s get this over with. I have actual work waiting for me."
Gregory adjusted his glasses before turning his attention to Catherine.
"Ms. Turner. It’s good to see you again."
Catherine returned a professional smile that never reached her eyes.
"Mr. Gregory. I wish I could say the same, but our last meeting still leaves a rather bitter taste in my mouth."
Catherine opened the divorce petition Dylan had filed and slid it across the table.
"I’ll get straight to the point," she said. "This claim is completely unreasonable."
She tapped the highlighted paragraph.
"Your client is demanding one hundred million dollars in emotional damages, arguing that my client failed to fulfill her marital obligations and pursued relationships with other people during the marriage."
She looked directly at Gregory.
"With all due respect, are you out of your mind? I don’t care what my client did. Your client isn’t entitled to one hundred million dollars because of it."
Gregory remained perfectly composed.
"I disagree."
He calmly opened a folder and placed several photographs and a medical report on the table.
"My client stood by Ms. Turner during one of the darkest periods of her life. He provided emotional support when she was struggling."
He paused.
"And while he remained committed to the marriage, she entered relationships with numerous other women."
He slid the photographs of Clara on dates with different women, along with the medical report, toward Catherine.
"My client later required psychological treatment for depression. Whether the court ultimately awards damages is for the judge to decide, but the emotional harm is documented."
The moment Clara saw the photographs, her heart skipped a beat.
She didn’t care that Dylan was using them against her.
What worried her was something else entirely.
Ashley.
If Ashley ever saw those pictures, she’d be screwed.
Catherine barely glanced at the evidence before responding.
"My client and yours mutually agreed to an open marriage from the beginning. Furthermore, their prenuptial agreement clearly states that neither party acquires any ownership interest in the other’s personal assets following a divorce."
She placed another document on the table.
"As for finances, Ms. Turner’s personal assets currently total approximately five million dollars."
Gregory gave a faint smile.
"That may be true."
He reached for another document.
"However, both Ms. Turner and her cousin are beneficiaries of a future inheritance estimated at roughly one hundred fifty million dollars each from their late maternal great-aunt."
He folded his hands together.
"That inheritance becomes available once the conditions established in the estate are satisfied."
Neither lawyer looked surprised by anything the other had presented.
"We’re aware of the inheritance," Catherine explained. "But nothing required my client to accept it. She declined her share, and the entire inheritance went to her cousin."
"Very smart," Dylan said, looking at Clara. "I didn’t think anyone would just turn down a hundred and fifty million dollars unless they were worried someone might eventually take it from them."
"You know, I don’t need an inheritance to make that kind of money," Clara replied with a smile. "I can make it myself."
"That’s easy to say when you were born with a silver spoon in your mouth," Dylan replied.
"What do you want me to say? I’m not going to feel bad about being born lucky."
Gregory leaned back slightly before speaking.
"Whether your client needs the inheritance or not is irrelevant. What matters is the value of the assets involved. If she refuses to settle with my client financially, then my client is prepared to seek compensation through other assets, including her interests in several companies."
Catherine’s expression hardened.
"Then there’s nothing left to discuss. We’re done here. We’ll see you in court, and we’ll let a judge decide what, if anything, your client is entitled to."
She started to rise from her chair.
"Wait."
Clara’s voice stopped her.
Instead of getting up, Clara leaned back into her chair, settling into a more comfortable position as she looked directly at Dylan.
"I don’t think you actually want my money, Dylan."
Dylan’s smile remained on his face.
"Really? And what makes you think that?"
"You’re too smart to believe I’d leave an opening for someone to take what’s mine."
She crossed one leg over the other.
"And you wouldn’t be sitting here asking for a divorce with that stupid smile on your face if you hadn’t already gotten what you wanted."
For the first time, Dylan’s smile grew wider.
"And what exactly is it that I supposedly wanted?" he asked.
"I don’t know," Clara replied.
She paused.
" I’ve only just discovered your true face so I can’t tell."
Her eyes remained fixed on him.
"But I do know one thing. You’ve always been very smart."
Catherine slowly sat back down.
She reached into her folder and pulled out a document she hadn’t shown them before.
Dylan’s eyes immediately dropped toward it.
Catherine placed the document on the table.
"This is my client’s revised offer."
She pushed it across the table toward him.
"One million dollars. That’s what Clara is willing to give you to end this entire mess right now."
Clara leaned back in her chair.
"What do you say we end this circus while we can still have a civilized conversation?"
Her expression became more serious.
"Or would you rather keep going and start a war with me?"
Dylan stared at her for several seconds.
Then he looked down at the document but didn’t touch it.
Instead, he handed it to Gregory.
Gregory read through every page carefully, checking the terms one by one.
After a moment, he looked at Dylan and gave him a small nod.
No hidden conditions.
No obvious trap.
Nothing that immediately raised a concern.
Dylan finally looked back at Clara.
"No. I think it’s better to leave things here. After all, we’ve always been friends, haven’t we?"
He picked up the pen lying on the table and removed the cap.
"I never thought I’d be divorced one day."
He signed the agreement and pushed it across the table toward Clara.
Clara glanced at the signature before passing the document to Catherine, who placed it inside her bag.
Dylan stood up, followed by Gregory.
"Well... I guess I’ll see you around."
He headed toward the door.
"I never thought everyone in our generation of the family would end up getting divorced," Catherine said with a smile.
She was referring to Carl’s divorce, Clara’s divorce, and her own, which only a few people knew about so far.
"What do you say we get a drink to celebrate?" Said Clara.
--------
One floor above, in the CEO’s office, Lucinda was sitting across from her former father-in-law, who was carefully reading the document she had handed him.
"Don’t worry. There aren’t any copies left," Lucinda said.
"You should actually thank me for stealing this document from my grandfather. He’s been using these documents to extort money from your family for a long time."
"You can leave," Clovis said, barely looking up.
Lucinda, however, simply walked around the desk and sat down on the edge of it, almost directly on top of the document Clovis was reading.
Clovis looked at her calmly.
"I’ve already paid you the full amount you wanted. Now get out of my sight."
His voice was calm, but there was an unmistakable authority behind every word. For any normal person who knew Clovis, those words would have been enough to make them immediately obey.
But Lucinda wasn’t normal.
Instead of being intimidated, she was thrilled.
A rush of adrenaline coursed through her.
She had never encountered anyone quite like Clovis Turner.
A man whose single word could become an absolute order. A man who could make even his own children tremble with nothing more than a look.
"You know, I’ve had a lot of wet dreams about you," she said, lifting her skirt and revealing that she wasn’t wearing any panties. She spread her legs wider, revealing her pussy, with a neatly trimmed patch of hair above it.
"What would you say to making my dream come true, as a sign of our good cooperation?" she said, tugging lightly on Clovis’s tie.
Clovis remained completely calm, as though there were nothing unusual about the situation. He stared at her silently for a few seconds, then stood up. He then undid his belt and fly, revealing that penis that wasn’t fully hard yet. A broad smile spread across Lucinda’s face as she moved closer to Clovis.
Then, with the same hard, unreadable expression he always wore, Clovis began fucking her roughly. His movements were forceful and relentless, leaving no room for tenderness or hesitation toward the woman who was still his son’s wife just a few days ago.
Lucinda’s breath caught before a moan escaped her lips. She cried out in pleasure as Clovis’s cock buried itself deep inside her, her voice echoing through the soundproof office. A strange part of her almost wished the walls weren’t soundproof at all. She wanted everyone outside to hear exactly what was happening behind that closed door.
Her fingers trembled as she unbuttoned her shirt. Without looking away from Clovis, she began caressing her breasts, her eyes remaining fixed on the older man who was old enough to be her father .
Clovis pushed her skirt higher and higher, gathering the fabric around her waist before gripping her firmly by the hips. His pace grew increasingly intense, each thrust rougher than the last. Lucinda’s body reacted instinctively to every movement, her skin growing flushed as heat spread through her.
She was already soaked with arousal, and within only a few minutes, her face and chest had turned noticeably red from the intensity of their encounter. Her breathing became uneven, broken by soft moans and gasps as she struggled to keep her composure.
Then, without warning, a powerful tremor ran through her entire body. Her fingers tightened against Clovis as she reached her climax, her eyes briefly closing as the sensation overwhelmed her.
A pleasant warmth spread through Lucinda’s lower abdomen when Clovis came inside her. For several seconds, neither of them moved.
Eventually, Clovis pulled away. His expression remained as cold and composed as ever, as though nothing significant had happened. He picked up a tissue, wiped himself off, then calmly fastened his zipper and belt.
Lucinda, meanwhile, remained frozen for a few seconds, still trying to recover from the euphoria coursing through her body. When she finally climbed down from the table, her legs felt unsteady beneath her. Whitish fluid ran down her thighs, a lingering reminder of what had just happened.
She glanced down, then slipped a finger inside herself before tasting the fluid that had come from her body.
A satisfied smile touched her lips.
"I’ll never forget this day," she said, straightening her skirt and smoothing out the fabric as though trying to restore some semblance of normalcy.
Clovis barely looked at her.
"Don’t let me see you again," he said firmly.
With those words, Lucinda left the office feeling completely satisfied.
She took the elevator down, finally having everything she wanted. Nothing could ruin her mood now.
Then the elevator doors opened one floor below.
Lucinda’s smile grew even wider when she saw Dylan and his attorney, Mr Gregory.
"You look really happy," Dylan remarked, already having a pretty good idea why she was smiling like that.
Gregory, meanwhile, caught a strange but oddly familiar smell lingering in the elevator. He couldn’t quite place it, so he said nothing.
"Of course I’m happy. It’s a beautiful day," Lucinda replied, practically glowing.
Then she looked at Dylan.
"And you? Did you get everything you wanted?"
"Yeah. Everything worked out," Dylan replied.
For Dylan, his marriage to Clara had never been about getting her money.
It had simply been a way to gain the privileges that came with being Turner’s son-in-law.
Through that position, he had established connections with numerous influential people and gained access to valuable information that would eventually help him build his own empire.
With all the money he had made from those opportunities, Dylan believed that in five years, he could become a highly influential man.
"Good. How about we grab a drink to celebrate?" Lucinda suggested.
After thanking Gregory, the two of them got into Lucinda’s car.
She drove with a joyful melody playing through the speakers.
Seeing her smile, Dylan couldn’t help but smile too.
Even though Lucinda was completely crazy, Dylan couldn’t stop himself from loving her. He wanted to spend the rest of his life with her.
"Will you marry me?" Dylan suddenly asked.
The question caught Lucinda off guard for a few seconds, but she quickly recovered.
"Okay," she replied with a smile.
"Really?" Dylan asked, unable to believe what he’d just heard.
"I said yes," Lucinda repeated with a laugh, looking at him as he stared at her in complete disbelief.
An even greater wave of happiness washed over Dylan.
He leaned toward her to kiss her, but....
Suddenly, another car slammed violently into theirs.
The impact sent both vehicles skidding across the road before Lucinda’s car rolled several times, traveling dozens of yards before finally coming to a stop upside down.
The driver’s side, where Lucinda was sitting, had taken the full force of the collision, leaving the entire side badly crushed.
Traffic quickly came to a stop as drivers pulled over and stepped out of their cars. People gathered around the wreckage, staring through the shattered windows and crushed metal, desperately trying to see if anyone was still alive.
