Chapter 51: Chapter 51 - On drugs

"Cheers," Mackenzie said, raising her cup before downing the entire drink.

Ben stared at her. Something had to be seriously wrong if someone as intelligent and composed as Mackenzie was drinking like that.

"So, where’s Carl?" Mackenzie asked. "I thought the message I got was from him."

"Carl’s gone. He probably won’t be back for a long time," Ben explained.

He was a little disappointed that the conversation had turned back to his charismatic cousin, but it was a perfectly reasonable question.

"Were you two...?" Ben began, leaving the rest unsaid.

Mackenzie immediately understood what he meant.

"Oh, God. No.."

"I don’t date my patients. Besides, I’m married," Mackenzie explained.

Ben glanced at her hand. There was no ring.

"Or... I was married," Mackenzie corrected herself, her voice turning sad.

She took another long drink.

Ben immediately suspected that whatever was bothering her had something to do with her marriage.

"I don’t even understand why I’m drinking this much. I have a pretty high tolerance," Mackenzie admitted. "Sometimes it takes a lot before I can completely forget about my problems."

Ben remembered the pills in his pocket.

"Would you be up for doing something illegal?" he asked.

Mackenzie looked at him.

"Don’t tempt me. I’ve wanted to kill someone all week," she replied.

"No, I’m not talking about murder," Ben said, pulling out the pills.

Mackenzie stared at them, caught somewhere between surprise and disbelief.

"I swear, I’ve never willingly taken drugs before. Someone gave these to me a few hours ago," Ben explained.

"Forget it. It was a bad idea," he added when Mackenzie remained silent.

"What do those pills do?" Mackenzie asked.

"I honestly don’t know. I took one once, and I woke up on the other side of the city," Ben admitted.

Mackenzie still looked hesitant.

Even Ben was surprised that he was the one encouraging someone else to take drugs.

"Can I trust you if I black out?" Mackenzie asked, looking directly into his eyes.

"Absolutely. I’m pretty sure you’ll be more conscious than I am after taking one," Ben replied.

A few dozen minutes later, Mackenzie became extremely emotional, crying as she told Ben about her problems.

It wasn’t exactly the reaction she’d expected, but everyone reacted differently to drugs.

Ben, meanwhile, felt like he needed to move. He wanted to dance, run, or simply do something, but he was still aware enough to listen.

Mackenzie told him that her husband of nine years had been cheating on her and had a child with his mistress. He’d even bought a house not far from theirs. Every day, he’d pretended to go to work when he was actually working from home with his second family.

"They completely made a fool out of me. I’m such an idiot for not realizing it sooner," Mackenzie said, curling up on herself.

"You know what? They can go to hell," Ben said, getting to his feet.

He grabbed Mackenzie’s hand and helped her up.

"Come on. We’re gonna pay them a little visit," Ben said.

"What are we gonna do there?" Mackenzie asked.

"We’re gonna graffiti their house," Ben replied.

It was incredibly immature, but Ben was high. Being mature wasn’t exactly a priority right now.

"How are we getting there? I can’t drive anymore," Mackenzie asked with an amused smile.

Ben took her hand and led her out of the room.

He opened the guest-room door where the drug dealer was staying. The man was still there, now with another woman.

"We need you to drive us somewhere," Ben said, walking in without paying much attention to what they were doing.

The woman immediately grabbed a blanket to cover herself.

"I’m kinda busy here," the dealer said.

"One thousand dollars if you drive us somewhere so we can commit some vandalism," Ben offered, pulling out his wallet.

"It’s your call, boss," the dealer replied.

He quickly got dressed and left with Ben and Mackenzie.

They stopped to buy spray paint before parking near the second house belonging to Mackenzie’s soon-to-be ex-husband.

"I’m gonna wait in the car while you guys do whatever you’re gonna do," the dealer said.

"I know we’re angry and high right now, but are you sure you wanna do this?" Ben asked as they walked up the brightly lit driveway.

"Absolutely," Mackenzie replied.

"That’s it!" she said, pointing toward a cute little house.

She carefully approached the garage door and started drawing.

"What are you gonna draw?" Ben asked.

He quickly found out.

"A penis," Ben said.

He started writing something of his own beside it.

"Ah, we should’ve bought eggs to throw at their door," Mackenzie said, admiring their masterpiece.

They started sneaking away when they noticed a police car inspecting their vehicle.

The car suddenly drove off, leaving them behind.

"What are we gonna do?" Mackenzie asked, crouching behind a bush with the spray-paint can still in her hand.

"You said you don’t live far from here, right? Let’s go to your place," Ben suggested.

"Okay, let’s go. Hopefully we don’t run into any police cars before we get there," Mackenzie replied.

Five minutes later, they arrived at Mackenzie’s house.

She reached under a flowerpot and pulled out a hidden key.

"Are you sure your husband isn’t there?" Ben asked.

"I’m sure. But it’d be pretty funny if he was," Mackenzie replied as she unlocked the door.

"This place is really nice," Ben said, looking around the fairly spacious house.

"Thanks," Mackenzie replied.

"Do you want something to eat?" she asked, opening the pantry. "I still have a slice of pizza I bought before the party."

"Sure," Ben said.

He hadn’t eaten anything that night, and after everything they’d done, he was starving.

Mackenzie reheated the pizza in the microwave before sitting down across from him.

"I don’t want to impose or anything, but could I stay here tonight? I left my phone in the car," Ben explained.

That was when Mackenzie remembered that her purse and car were somewhere out there, and she had no idea where either of them was.

"Sure. No problem," she said.

Two hours later, Ben was lying on the couch, trying to fall asleep.

But he couldn’t.

The night had been incredible, and despite everything that had happened, he couldn’t shake the feeling that he wanted something more. He wanted to spend the night with Mackenzie.

Judging by how hesitant she’d looked before going upstairs, he had a feeling she might want the same thing.

’ Should I get up and ask if I can sleep with her, or should I just stay here?’

’ Maybe I should just sleep.’ he thought.

’ No, Ben. You spent the whole night trying to finally become a real man. Act like one and go ask her. If she says no, so be it.’

He started to get up from the couch.

’ But what if I scare her?’

He slowly sat back down.

’Think about it. She’s alone in her house with a stranger. She probably already feels uneasy about the possibility of me trying something.

I’ll sleep here and ask her out tomorrow. That’s probably better.’

Ben decided that missing his chance tonight was better than ruining what could become a real chance with an amazing woman.

Then he heard footsteps coming down the stairs.

He sat up and looked over.

Mackenzie appeared at the bottom of the stairs wearing only a T-shirt and underwear.

"I was thirsty," she said as she headed into the kitchen.

She returned about thirty seconds later.

"Good night," Mackenzie said, giving him a hesitant look before heading back upstairs.

Ben wasn’t exactly the bravest man in the world, but he could tell she was giving him a signal.

"Wait," he said.

Mackenzie stopped and looked back at him.

"Can I sleep with you?" Ben asked, looking directly into her eyes.

After a few seconds of silence, she nodded.

"Okay,"

Ben’s heart started pounding.

He almost wished whatever he’d taken earlier was still affecting him. He was surprised the effects seemed to be wearing off so quickly.

A few moments later, they were in Mackenzie’s bedroom.

A large bed that once belonged to her and her husband. They climbed in and pulled the covers over themselves, but neither made the first move.

Ben hesitated.

He’d asked if he could sleep with her. He hadn’t asked if he could have sex with her.

To him, those were two completely different things.

"Good night," Mackenzie said for the third time that night.

That was when Ben finally stopped overthinking everything.

Ben moved closer and gently turned her toward him.

Mackenzie turned all the way around, her eyes wide as they locked onto his.

Ben slid a hand around her waist and leaned in.

Mackenzie closed her eyes as their lips met.

They shared a long, passionate kiss.

After a few seconds, Ben shifted above her. Mackenzie’s hand moved gently over his back as they kissed.

It was the first time in twelve years that she’d kissed someone other than her husband. And despite the awkwardness between them, she felt a passion she hadn’t experienced in years.

Ben pulled off his shirt while Mackenzie slipped out of her T-shirt. The room was dim, but Ben could still make out her beautiful breasts neither too large nor too small, but perfectly round and firm. He immediately leaned down and began kissing and sucking on them.

Mackenzie moaned with pleasure, her head falling back against the bed. Then, out of the corner of her eye, she caught sight of a photograph of herself and her husband, the two of them smiling happily together.

"Stop!" she cried.

Ben froze and immediately pulled away.

"What’s wrong?" he asked, panic flashing across his face.

"No. We can’t do this," Mackenzie said.

"I’m still married," she explained.

Ben fell silent as Mackenzie pulled her T-shirt back on.

He started to get up, but she reached out and caught his hand.

"I’m really sorry," she said.

"It’s okay. I’ll go back to sleeping on the couch," Ben replied.

"You can stay here and sleep with me if you want. But that’s all we’ll do. We’ll just sleep," Mackenzie explained.

Ben slowly lay back down.

Mackenzie turned toward him and gently rested her head against his shoulder.

Neither said a word.

After everything they’d been through that night, the silence between them felt strangely comforting.

Ben stared at the ceiling for a while before finally drifting into a deep sleep.

The next morning, Ben woke up with a beautiful woman in his arms.

For a few moments, he simply looked at Mackenzie.

It had been an incredible experience for him. He’d always imagined what it would feel like to wake up with a woman in his arms, watch her sleep, and gently brush a strand of hair away from her face.

So he did exactly that.

He carefully tucked a loose strand of Mackenzie’s hair behind her ear.

A few seconds later, she stirred.

"Morning," she mumbled sleepily, lifting her head to look at him.

"Morning," Ben replied.

At that moment, Ben genuinely thought she was the most beautiful woman in the world.

Her hair was a mess, her eyes were puffy from crying and barely sleeping, and she looked exhausted.

He leaned in to kiss her, but Mackenzie turned her face away.

Instead, Ben pressed a long, gentle kiss to her forehead.

"Again, I’m sorry about last night. You must really be disappointed," Mackenzie said.

"Are you kidding? I had the best night of my life," Ben replied.

And he meant it.

Mackenzie slowly sat up.

"I need to get my car back. I have to go to work," she said.

It was only then that Ben remembered something important.

It was Monday.

"I need to get home too. I have to get ready for work," Ben said.

Mackenzie went upstairs to get ready while Ben waited in the living room.

About thirty minutes later, she came downstairs.

Ben couldn’t help staring.

Her hair was done, her clothes were neat, and she looked polished and confident again.

"So, how do I look?" Mackenzie asked when she caught him staring.

"You’re the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen," Ben replied.

Mackenzie smiled.

"Thank you. Let’s go," she said.

Ben had expected her to act differently once she was completely sober. Instead, she was still just as charming.

Actually, she was even better now that her head was clear.

In the taxi, Ben kept catching himself looking at her.

Mackenzie noticed every time but never said anything. She simply smiled.

There was something about her that completely fascinated him.

After gathering enough courage, Ben finally spoke.

"So... would you go on a date with me?" he asked.

Mackenzie hesitated.

"Listen, you’re a really great guy, but I only found out two days ago that the person I trusted most stabbed me in the back. I’m not sure I’m ready to start dating again when I still have to find a lawyer and get my divorce started," she explained.

Her reasons were completely understandable.

After everything she’d just gone through, moving on wasn’t going to be easy.

"I understand," Ben said.

When they reached Ben’s apartment building, they immediately spotted Mackenzie’s car parked along the street.

The dealer was standing beside it.

"There you are. I was starting to think the cops got you," he said, holding out Mackenzie’s keys.

"No, we got away before they spotted us," Ben explained as he took the keys and retrieved his phone from the car.

Then he remembered the pills.

"Actually, here. I think I’m done with drugs," Ben said, handing the remaining pills back to the dealer.

"Yeah... about that. They’re not actually drugs. They’re just headache medicine. I really needed money, so I grabbed whatever I could find and sold it to drunk people," the dealer admitted.

"What?" Ben and Mackenzie said together.

They stared at him in disbelief.

Neither of them had expected that.

They’d spent the entire night believing the pills were responsible for everything that had happened.

But apparently, they weren’t.

Ben suddenly understood why everything from the previous night had felt so vivid and real. He’d been convinced the pills were affecting him, and his brain had simply followed that expectation.

The discovery was almost ridiculous.

Mackenzie looked at the dealer after he left.

"This is embarrassing. I really thought the drugs were the reason I cried like a baby," she admitted.

"You don’t have to be embarrassed. You’re still beautiful when you cry," Ben told her.

Mackenzie smiled.

"Well, I should get going. But I had a great night." she said.

" Goodbye, Benjamin,"

She started walking toward her car.

Ben watched her go, already disappointed that their night had to end.

Still, he’d had an unforgettable night with an incredible woman.

He couldn’t just let her disappear from his life.

Ben walked up to her and gently brushed a few strands of hair behind her ear before leaning in and kissing her deeply.

Mackenzie immediately returned the kiss, wrapping her arms around his neck.

Their lips remained together for several seconds before they finally pulled apart.

"Goodbye, Mackenzie," Ben said.

He rested his forehead against hers, his arms still around her waist.

Mackenzie finally got into her car.

Ben watched as she started the engine.

Then he panicked.

He didn’t want it to end like this.

He hurried over and tapped on her window.

Mackenzie lowered it.

"Could you give me your number?" Ben asked.

He paused.

"I know this probably sounds crazy, but I’d regret it for the rest of my life if I let you leave without any way of contacting you again," he said.

He swallowed.

"I’m not going to ask you out again until you’re ready. But I’d like to be part of your life. I want us to be friends," Ben added.

The words came straight from his heart.

Mackenzie smiled.

She took Ben’s phone and entered her number.

"Have a good day, Benjamin," she said.

"You too," Ben replied.

Ben stood there with a huge smile on his face as she drove away.

His day was already off to a great start.

He’d just met the woman of his dreams.

They couldn’t be together right now, but Ben had already decided he wasn’t going to give up easily. He was willing to wait until Mackenzie was ready.

When he finally got back to his apartment, he found the place completely trashed after the party.

He barely cared.

He quickly got ready for work and headed out.

By the time he arrived at the office, Ben was in an unusually good mood. He greeted people cheerfully as he walked through the building, something he rarely did.

As the elevator doors were closing, he spotted Clara inside and hurried over to stop them.

"Good morning, Clara," Ben said.

"Morning, Ben. That was one hell of a party you threw last night," Clara replied.

Ben looked at her, slightly surprised.

He hadn’t even realized she’d been there.

"Thanks. I don’t remember seeing you," Ben said.

"We were there. I just didn’t want to interrupt you while you were talking to a very beautiful woman," Clara explained.

Ben immediately knew who she meant.

"So, how did it go with her?" Clara asked. "I saw the way you were looking at her. You were totally into her."

Ben wanted to deny it.

But there was no point.

Still, he didn’t want to make a big deal out of it. Whatever was happening between him and Mackenzie was still uncertain.

"It was great," Ben replied, keeping his answer deliberately vague.

His phone suddenly vibrated.

Ben pulled it out and checked the notification.

A smile immediately spread across his face.

It was a message from Mackenzie.

She’d sent him a picture of a box of medication.

"Look what I found in the medicine cabinet at work, lol."

It was the same medicine they had mistaken for a drug.
