Chapter 6: Chapter 6 - Clara Turner

Clara Turner had always lived in luxury.

Her father was a billionaire. Her mother, meanwhile, was a millionaire.

As a result, ever since the day her father gave her her first credit card at the age of thirteen, the balance in her bank account had never dropped below six figures. Alongside her half-brother, she was one of the heirs to her father’s immense fortune. On her mother’s side, however, she was the sole heir.

From the outside, her life seemed perfect. Yet, as the saying goes, the crown is heavy to wear.

After her older brother was deemed incompetent by their father, all of his attention shifted to Clara from a very young age. She had never attended school. Her entire education took place inside their enormous villa, where loneliness always managed to catch up with her.

Even so, her parents loved her, especially her father. He considered her a genius and named her his heir when she was only fifteen years old. From that moment on, she began learning how to run an empire worth billions. But, as her father had told her, if you wanted to run such an empire, you first had to learn how to lead people.

And that was precisely what she did best.

She always got what she wanted from other people.

Clara’s future already seemed set in stone.

But on her sixteenth birthday, she met a girl.

As on every one of her birthdays, Clara was alone. At home, her parents were far too busy to remember their own daughter’s birthday.

It was on that day that she fell in love with the only teenage girl she spent time with: the daughter of one of their employees.

Since Clara always got what she wanted, she succeeded in making the young girl fall in love with her through schemes known only to herself.

It was Clara’s first love.

Unfortunately for her, the relationship didn’t last.

When her father discovered their relationship, he simply decided to ignore Clara completely. Hoping to regain his affection, she broke up with the young girl.

But nothing changed.

At the age of eighteen, she decided to leave her hometown and her family’s estate to attend university, simply for a change of scenery.

She had never planned on falling in love.

Then she met Ashley.

"Are you sure you don’t want to come with us?" Julia asked from the other end of the phone.

"No. Have fun. I’m busy right now," she lied.

In reality, she was lying in her room doing nothing. Or rather, she was thinking about the best way to make Ashley fall into her hands.

’I’d forgotten just how delusional having a crush can make us... and almost creepy,’ she thought after considering kidnapping Ashley and locking her in one of the many bedrooms in the mansion.

After all, if Ashley disappeared, no one would really go looking for her except her roommates. And even they would probably give up eventually, since searching for someone required both time and money.

"Ahhhhhh!" she cried in frustration, unable to come up with a method that was more legal yet just as effective as all the Machiavellian plans she had imagined.

Then an idea crossed her mind.

What was the best way to draw someone toward you?

The answer was simple.

Either you paid them.

Or you offended them.

Or both.

She opened her laptop and looked up the apartment building where Ashley lived. Her first instinct was to buy the entire building. But the paperwork would take far too long, and Ashley had no connection whatsoever to the landlord.

She needed to be more precise.

The apartment.

"Hello. I’m calling to pay the rent for apartment number 10 on the second floor," she said to the landlord.

"I’m going to pay three months’ rent, but I need the receipt today. It’s urgent."

"In whose name?"

"Ashley Gresham."

There.

Everything was in place.

All that was left was to wait for the fish to bite the hook.

A smile spread across her face as she stood up.

She had just come up with a plan that was as offensive as it was disturbing. She knew perfectly well that Ashley would never be able to pay her back, even if she wanted to.

Let’s be honest...

This plan was still better than the first one, in which she had considered kidnapping Ashley.
