Chapter 60: Chapter 60 - awkwardness

Clara was wearing an elegant white pantsuit, paired with a matching handbag and oversized sunglasses that completed her girl-boss look. But the sunglasses weren’t just for style; they were also there to hide the very noticeable black eye on her face.

She stepped into a relatively small building that served as the headquarters of the new company that had recently begun competing with theirs.

"Hello," she said to the receptionist.

"I’m here for the shareholders’ meeting," she added with a small smile.

The receptionist called a security guard, who escorted Clara up four floors and showed her to the meeting room.

As soon as she opened the door, every head turned toward her.

Almost everyone in the room looked surprised to see her there. And the most surprised person of all was her ex-husband ,Dylan and the CEO of the new company in question.

"Clara? What are you doing here?" Dylan asked.

The other shareholders immediately began whispering among themselves, wondering why she was there.

"Not even a hello? Aren’t you happy to see your ex-wife?" Clara asked with a smile.

She was there to show Dylan that no one mess with the Turner family and walk away as if nothing had happened.

"Hello. I’m happy to see you, but I’d appreciate it if you could leave. We have important matters to discuss," Dylan replied.

He had no idea why Clara was there, but he assumed she was only trying to provoke or destabilize him. But he was a different man now. He had become more important, and he wasn’t going to let her intimidate him.

"I think I have every right to be here. After all, I own 30 percent of this company," she said before walking over to an empty chair and sitting down comfortably.

"What? That’s impossible. I would know if someone owned such a large stake in my company," Dylan said.

He had a point. He knew almost all of the investors personally. Most of them lived far away and owned no more than 9 percent of the company. Only he and Lucinda held 45 percent of the shares between them.

Still, despite his doubts, Dylan knew what Clara and her family were capable of. They weren’t the type to make empty claims or bluff without a reason. So he assumed that what she was saying was most likely true.

"How did you do it?" Dylan asked, his expression turning serious.

A wide smile spread across Clara’s face when she saw his reaction.

"It was easy. The first rule our family has followed to get this far is never to trust anyone, especially people outside the family. You weren’t exactly discreet. I simply pretended not to notice what you were planning.

"So, when you started looking for investors, I made sure you approached people who either already had good relationships with the Turners or wanted to maintain good relations with us. Then, by being very persuasive, I convinced them to sell me their shares," Clara explained.

Just then, a woman suddenly opened the door and hurried toward Dylan, looking panicked, a folder clutched in her hands.

The dozens of people in the room grew even more restless. Clara’s revelation had nothing to do with the matter they had originally gathered to discuss, but everyone was stunned that the CEO of a rival company now owned such a significant portion of their company.

Dylan quickly went through the documents the woman had brought him.

After a few seconds, he looked back at Clara, who was still smiling.

"What happened to your eye?" Dylan asked, finally noticing the black eye beneath her sunglasses.

His assistant had just confirmed everything Clara had said, leaving him furious on the inside—and impressed despite himself.

"I made a little mistake and paid the price for it. I guess you could call it karma," Clara replied.

The way she said it made it clear that she believed Dylan would eventually get what he deserved too, after betraying her and her family.

"What exactly do you want?" Dylan asked, his tone more hostile than he had intended.

As far as he was concerned, he had already suffered enough after the accident caused by Carl, and he had been planning to get his revenge somehow.

What he hadn’t expected was that Clara wanted revenge too.

"Nothing for now. But little by little, as this company grows bigger, I’ll take more and more control of it until there’s nothing left for you," Clara said seriously as she removed her sunglasses.

During the meeting, Clara simply observed the people around the table, sizing them up as potential targets if she wanted to gain control of the company Dylan had founded.

As she listened to Dylan’s presentation, she was actually impressed by all the plans he had already come up with for the company’s development.

He wasn’t completely stupid. His biggest mistake had simply been making the Turner family his enemies.

After the meeting, Clara finally went to see a doctor about her black eye. The doctor reassured her that it wasn’t serious and that it wouldn’t leave any marks on her face after a week or so. He also gave her some ointment to apply to the injured area.

After that, she decided to go upstairs to the floor where her father was being treated.

But when she arrived, Clara was first surprised to find that there were no guards. Then she was even more surprised when she found no one in her father’s room.

"Excuse me, where is the patient who was staying in this room?" Clara asked a passing nurse.

"Hello, Miss Turner. Your father was discharged from the hospital more than two weeks ago," the nurse replied, recognizing Clara immediately.

"He was discharged? Wasn’t he in a coma?" Clara asked.

It was true that she hadn’t visited her father in almost a month, but the last time she had seen him, he had been on the verge of death.

"No. He was no longer in a coma when he was discharged. He left the hospital walking on his own. He was even wearing a suit, if I remember correctly," the nurse explained.

Clara was stunned by the revelation.

If her father had already been able to walk on his own for weeks, why hadn’t he told anyone? And more importantly, why hadn’t he taken back his position yet?

Clara immediately decided to call her mother, who told her that her father was at home.

Clara decided to go there right away to see him and talk to him.

Thirty minutes later, she arrived at their large mansion.

"Where’s Dad?" Clara asked her mother, who was working on the couch in the great room.

Her mother stared at her for a moment. She probably expected something more than a greeting from her only child, but that was the risk you took when you never showed your children any affection.

"My God, what happened to that beautiful face of yours?" she asked, noticing Clara’s black eye.

"Nothing. Just a little accident. So, where’s Dad?" Clara asked again.

"He’s upstairs in his office," her mother replied.

Clara went straight upstairs and knocked three times before entering her father’s office.

It was a huge room, with shelves filled with books covering the walls. Clovis Turner was sitting peacefully, reading a book.

Clara entered quietly and gently closed the door behind her.

"Good afternoon, Father. How are you?" she asked respectfully.

Clovis looked up, and a small smile appeared on his face.

The smile unsettled Clara. She wondered if her father was still sick or if something was wrong with him.

"I’m fine," her father replied.

Clara noticed a bandage peeking out from beneath his shirt, but he otherwise looked perfectly fine.

"And how are you doing? How does it feel to be the CEO?" he asked.

Once again, Clara was surprised.

How are you doing?

That didn’t sound like her father at all.

Clovis Turner had never asked anyone that before—not even his own children.

Perhaps nearly dying at the hands of one of his own children had changed him.

If that was really the case, Clara cursed Carl inwardly. Seeing her father like this was almost unsettling.

If Carl were here, I’d slap him for turning our father into someone slightly nicer.

"It’s difficult, but I’m getting used to it," Clara replied.

"I saw a report on your work, and I have to say, it’s not bad. You’re handling things quite well," Clovis said.

Coming from Clovis, that was a genuine compliment. Clara held her head high, proud of what she had accomplished.

She also wondered who had written the report without telling her that her father had already recovered. Still, she was pleased that whoever had written it had had nothing but good things to say about her.

As Clara was about to leave her father’s office, she felt relieved and finally relaxed.

Her father had really become strange.

If Carl were here, I’d slap him for turning our father into someone slightly nicer.

"Clara, aren’t you staying for lunch?" Regina called after her, watching her walk away.

"No, thanks. Don’t count on me coming back here anytime soon," Clara replied before slamming the door behind her and getting the hell out of there.
