Sly Foxx took a deep breath after taking the first step through the gate.
As this was what Ayana wanted for him, each step was full of determination.
He followed the cobbled pathway that led to perfectly manicured gardens.
Facing Sly was a beautiful flower filled paradise-esque scene.
Followed by the backdrop of a powerful three tiered waterfall that flowed into a river complete with its own water wheel.
Sly was tempted to wash his bloody knapsack in the pristine clear waters of the river.
But then he would have to wait until the bag dried and quickly changed his mind since Sly didn’t want any more delays.
The steady hum of the water wheel as the blades rotated through the water sounded surprisingly pleasant to his ears.
Suddenly the peaceful serenity of picturesque scenery was broken by loud, enraged voices.
"Kill them!"
"Leave no survivors!"
After the frightening roar followed the sounds of intense fighting Sly wanted to run in the opposite direction.
A pack of fighters burst out into the open but it only took a few seconds to realize it was one person surrounded by assassins trying to break his neck
The one surrounded, his face was filled with rage as the assassins taunted him in a circle.
Then one moved unbelievably fast towards him, the solo fighter caught him and what happened next was automatic.
The alpha broke the attacker’s neck and flung him aside.
Blood poured from a stomach wound where the knife had gone in.
Unable to look away, Sly stood transfixed, his pulse thudded in his throat.
Before he could recover another assassin attacked from behind but then the lone fighter’s spirit beast manifested for the first time out of his body when he was at the brink of death.
The spirit beast’s outstretched claws drove deep into the assassin’s face tearing it off like a mask and tossing it aside, stupefied the faceless assassin fell to the ground dead instantly,
While his spirit beast was attacking other assassins, Khaldun had another masked marauder tucked under the crook of his arms, the man was trying to get out of his grasp but it was too late for him.
Only two assassins were left and Sly watched as the spirit beast caught one.
When he tried to break away from him, he used his bloody claws to snatch the still-beating heart from out of the assassin’s chest.
Then the spirit beast flung it to Sly’s feet as if to offer him a wonderful bloody prize.
Then as if spent, the bloodthirsty spirit beast collapsed to his knees beside the assassin’s body that was now devoid of a heart.
The last remaining survivor from the pack of the assassins broke away from the pack that was fighting and staggered towards Sly’s direction.
When the mask slipped off it revealed the defined face of a boy his age.
His badly mauled body landed a few meters away from Sly’s feet after being thrown by some unseen force.
Only then did Sly see that it was a spirit beast but something was wrong with it.
Instead of fighting alongside its master it was acting berserk and doing its own thing.
Shaken up the boy staggered to his feet, blood dripped from his lips and faint jumbled words escaped his thin brittle lips, "help me."
Before Sly could ask, "how?"
A small dagger whistled through the air landing in its target’s neck.
Stupidly the boy pulled out the knife, blood gushed and he died with his eyes wide open still clutching his neck.
His pursuer followed from behind stopping only for a brief moment to retrieve the dagger that the dying boy had tossed to the ground.
After ensuring that the boy was dead, did this hulking beast fix his attention on Sly watching his every movement.
It seemed like out of nowhere he came very close to his body within an inch of Sly’s pulsating with chaotic spirit energy.
Khaldun Wolfe was nearly toppling six foot two over Sly’s more dimunitive five foot nine.
If he moved another inch closer their nose would almost be touching.
As if Khaldun liked what he saw he smiled and flashed his pearly whites, a sharp contrast against his permanently tanned skin.
Just like his hair he wore full black with his shoulder length hair tied back from his face in a loose version of a french braid to give the illusion that his black hair was very short.
Having fought wildly like a deranged monster everything about him was now dishevelled.
The perfectionist’s face that was normally clean had blood streaked all over it with twigs and grass embedded in Khaldun’s black hair.
Still Khaldun was a masterpiece worthy of any artist’s paintbrush with perfectly sculpted cheekbones that were arched high and graceful.
Everything about him exuded masculinity and that dimple in his cheeks would have made Sly feel welcome around him if this was any other situation.
He noticed Sly observing him and his smile widened.
Khaldun’s mismatched eyes sparkled with unnatural heat from within that had nothing to do with the sun beating down on them.
Sly felt the heat rise up from his neck to his face, Khaldun was literally undressing his body with his eyes while touching his bare skin.
The solid warmth of him radiated like a furnace against Sly’s body.
Khaldun high off the adrenaline filled with pain and violence now wanted to add sex to the equation.
He never desired someone like this before and he felt like if he didn’t mate with this cutie now he was simply going to overheat.
It didn’t matter that they were in the heart of the woods where friend or foe could chance upon them at any second, let them come his spirit beast howled not far away from them.
His alpha power breathed along Sly’s skin like he was going to explode with need at any second.
Khaldun ran his fingers down his sides brushing the ribcage, his fingers dug deeply into Sly’s flesh as if trying to massage a response out of him that wasn’t fear leaving Sly to squirm out from beneath him.
"My fated mate," he growled.
Did Sly hear wrong?"
