Chapter 29: Selected to be a guide

While it ran after Jolan the earth shook like an earthquake as its hooven feet moved on the ground creating cracks in the earth.

Now it spewed poison like molten lava at Jolan who was fighting valiantly.

In Jolan’s eyes was a very panicked look, with no support from Jack and Sly having a useless plant if he fell, this fight was over and he felt burdened by tremendous pressure.

Jolan was stubbornly giving his all to protect the bombardier beetle.

Which had one of its wings clipped from the molten lava and was devastatingly grounded and unable to take flight and escape to the sky.

Sly did not like the feeling of being useless but instead he chose to quiet the dark feelings that threatened to spill out of him and remain calm watching the chimera for any weakness.

Jolan was currently at the brink of despair that even when Sly moved from behind him he barely paid attention.

Mimosa finally awakened and turned things around with his usual brash moves.

The sudden downturn of events sorely left the Mercy Twins at a disadvantage.

Even the crowd was perturbed by the theatrics and lost in the confusion.

Seriously... the undefeated mercy twins had lost to rookies!

Mercy twins were in shock at the bizarre turn of events losing to a weakling like Sly especially in the public eye was intolerable for the twins and too difficult to accept.

"What the hell is happening with this new kid!"

"Geez.. his speed and movement are incredible!"

"Did the seniors really just lose to a rookie spirit plant user?

Amidst the boisterous speculations from the crowd the three rookies were smiling uncontrollably at their surprise victory over the senior students.

A legendary feat that had never been accomplished before today this match was definitely going to be the talk around the school for weeks to come.

Even Verde after getting over his initial shock was impressed and quickly pleaded for a rematch.

Unlike the Mercy twins, Verde never made excuses for his shortcomings.

Verde’s easygoing nature made him rebound quickly from the unsatisfactory defeat and he walked over to the trio to congratulate them.

He was not above bullying the new students but he did not share the goal of the Mercy duo to kill Sly.

Especially since the school’s instructors had informed the seniors repeatedly that the aim was to give the rookies a taste of the action.

While they could use force it wasn’t to be so excessive that it would terrorize rookies and undermine their confidence.

The school wanted to quickly reap the harvest by separating the wheat from the chafe.

In the eyes of the school’s administration it would be wonderful if the new recruits were able to adapt and bloom easily right out of the field.

With sincerity from the bottom of his heart Verde especially congratulated Sly, "you have potential to be amongst the best and get stronger so that I can fight you again someday."

"Thanks, I think" returned Sly still in a daze from their surprising win.

The rookie challenge of the day was over now it was time for them to be sorted into their groups where they would stay until they graduated from Paradise Military Academy.

Finally the trio’s names were called and the group once more walked to the center of the field.

Sly’s group was the center of attention because of their incredible luck and they had all the eyes from the instructors on them.

All the instructors had inscrutable looks on their faces and even though they tried their best to hide their discomfort.

It was evident that they still felt unsettled by some of the moves displayed by the new recruits earlier.

The rookie challenge was a traditional event upheld by the school yearly and was a credible platform for the new incoming students to gain sponsors and resources from the start.

Finally, after waiting around for a few minutes Sly’s name was called and he was brought along with other students to the building that the Empire’s Guide Association had established on campus.

Following instructions of personnel Sly was led over one of several registration desks where he was quickly seated in front of an older gentleman possibly early forties with no grey hair visible.

"Hello I’m Mr. Howard and I have been assigned your case file, as of today if you have any guide related issues please come and see me."

Sly simply nodded.

"Do you have any questions?"

"Yes, Mr. Howard," replied Sly shyly. "Why was I selected to be a Guide?"

"Remember before you participated in the placement test you stopped by the medical tent where you did a series of tests for a health check and volunteered blood. Every student’s blood contains spirit essence and yours is more suited for guide duties. Your blood contains traces of spirit energy and pheromones. Later in life, should something unfortunate happen like you get kidnapped or turned traitor, we can track your location with your blood. Also, your blood can be used to form pair bonds with a sentinel for long mission trips or even marriage."

After Mr. Howard’s explanation Sly underwent a very thorough registration process where they took samples of his hair and fingerprints.

Sly filled out data sheets that compiled his family background, date of birth and pictures of birth marks or scars would have been taken.

He also had his photo taken for a school identification card.

When Mr. Howard was satisfied with the data he retrieved from Sly; he personally escorted the shy young man to the Diagnostics lab for a minor surgery.

Sly’s eyes widened at the sight of all the expensive and modern looking machinery.

Everything looked so sleek and modern that Sly was even afraid to brush anything because he would never be able to afford the exorbitant repairs.

Mr. Howard brought him over to a genteel, middle aged lady. "Sly this is Dr. Shirley, she will perform the surgery and I will come and get you when it’s over."

Sensing Sly’s hesitation he added quickly, "don’t worry, Dr. Shirley is very skilled, you won’t feel a thing, the entire process is very quick."

After Mr. Howard left the room, Dr. Shirley guided him to an operating table and attached chair, he was to sit upright and place his left hand on the table palm up.

She numbed the area with a clear liquid, then brought over a machine that clamped on to Sly’s wrist.

Dr. Shirley didn’t even give any warning Sly only saw the machine lower itself and sliced his wrist open.
