A cold wind swept through the treetops with a faint rustle.
Pale sunlight fell across the old man’s withered face. Paired with that grating laughter, the entire place became unspeakably strange.
Xu Yuan silently watched the old man before him. Ghost qi enters the brain, causing bouts of madness.
After laughing for about a dozen breaths, the withered old man’s laughter abruptly stopped. The savage smile still hung at the corner of his mouth, but his expression suddenly froze. Gradually, the smile on his face faded. He lowered his eyes and fell silent for several breaths, then tremblingly cupped his hands toward Xu Yuan.
“This old... this old servant has overstepped. Third Young Master, please forgive me.”
“It’s fine.” Xu Yuan gently shook his head.
The withered old man’s pale lips moved, but he said nothing more. The light in his eyes dimmed a little. Hunching over, he continued silently leading the way for Xu Yuan.
For a hundred meters around the black abyss, there was only bare black earth. At a glance, not a single man-made structure could be seen.
But before long, a dark passage leading downward appeared before Xu Yuan.
The withered old man seemed to need time to steady his emotions, so he went straight down without saying a word.
Xu Yuan entered the passage together with Ran Qingmo and soon discovered that there were no engraved pattern lamps on either side of the tunnel. Instead, it was lit by the oldest and simplest method, open flame.
As the light of the lamps flickered, Xu Yuan suddenly noticed that the shadows of the three of them were constantly trembling and shifting.
After staring at them for a long while, Xu Yuan asked in his mind, Mister Luo, what’s that?
The Sage’s remnant soul explained without the slightest concern, “A trait of ghost fog. Many things inside ghost fog are different from the outside world. If not for the formation restricting it, this place would probably have already been swallowed by the ghost fog. Since we are at the edge of it, you can understand this place as the boundary between Yin and Yang. Of course, that is only a figure of speech, but it is close enough.”
Xu Yuan understood. Over the past few days, he had read many ancient texts concerning ghost fog. Those texts all treated ghost fog as something deeply taboo. Their descriptions were also as horrifying as possible. It corroded all things, spread without limit, turned entire regions into forbidden zones of life, and was considered a man-made calamity. Once it emerged, countless living beings would suffer.
Now that Xu Yuan had seen it with his own eyes, he finally understood a little. There was light, yet no proper shadows. The rules of common sense had been rewritten on the spot.
They continued downward in silence. The passage spiraled deeper and deeper, so far down it seemed to have no end.
After who knew how long, Ran Qingmo suddenly spoke beside him. “We’re almost there.”
Xu Yuan immediately grew alert. He had a feeling he was about to see something extraordinary. They walked for another dozen breaths or so before the end of the descending spiral passage finally appeared before them.
There stood a stone archway like the entrance to a tunnel, now wrapped in a thin layer of white light.
To avoid losing control of his emotions again, the withered old man still said nothing. He merely looked back at Xu Yuan, then silently passed through the white light.
Xu Yuan stopped before the glowing curtain and glanced at Ran Qingmo.
Ran Qingmo blinked, then nodded at him, indicating there was no danger.
Xu Yuan guessed that this was probably some kind of formation, so he stepped through as well.
The instant he passed through the thin white membrane, the view before him opened up.
It was an enormous cavern. The inner walls of the cave were hidden in darkness, impossible to see to the end at a glance. Yet beneath his feet, unknown gems gave off a faint glow, stretching endlessly and linking together into intricate formation patterns that extended all the way to the limit of his sight.
A few breaths after he entered, one complicated formation pattern after another lit up in sequence, like water flowing into channels. After several breaths of charging, the darkness throughout the entire cavern was illuminated by the formation lines, revealing its true appearance.
Along the inner rock walls of the cavern were rows upon rows of neatly arranged stone chambers. Inside them, countless illusory malicious ghosts were trapped, crazily slamming against the walls. But the inner walls of those chambers were also carved with dense, intricate formation patterns, making it impossible for the ghosts to escape.
Seeing this cavern of a hundred ghosts, Xu Yuan’s breathing gradually began to tremble.
“Kid, you’ve never seen this before?” the Sage’s remnant soul asked, his tone carrying a hint of teasing.
Xu Yuan steadied his mind and gently shook his head. That demonic beasts could be raised in captivity was practically common knowledge, even among ordinary folk. But ghosts were a completely different matter.
Hearing this, the Sage’s remnant soul gave a low laugh. His tone carried a trace of emotion, as if he were watching the world change before his eyes.
“Heh. Fair enough. The last time I came out was three thousand years ago. Back then, whenever ghost fog emerged, even if it did not leave all life in misery, it would still become a forbidden region. Wiping it out was harder than ascending to heaven. When your elder brother mentioned this to me earlier, I still found it somewhat difficult to believe. But now that I’ve seen it myself, this ghost fog can truly be raised like demonic beasts. Heh. Humanity really has flourished.”
Xu Yuan frowned and said nothing. He suddenly understood why Lady Lou Ji had said before that if something happened here, it would affect the supply of soul-type pills across the entire southwest of the Great Flame Empire.
Medicinal herbs that helped the soul not only required extremely harsh growing environments, but also had very long growth cycles. Even with a mature system for accelerating growth, a single batch of herbs would take at least two or three years to mature, and in slower cases, more than ten years.
But after millions of years of development, pills that aided the soul no longer had to be refined from medicinal herbs alone.
Ghosts and demonic beast souls could be refined as well. The soul power contained within natural soul bodies like ghostly demons was more than enough to meet the needs of pill refinement. As long as the vicious, violent energy within them was extracted through special methods during the refining process, a soul pill could be made.
Hunting demons and slaying ghosts is nothing new. But raising them in captivity... Thinking up to this point, Xu Yuan let out a long breath.
The technology tree of this world was not something that had stayed unchanged for 10,000 years. Under the centralized power of the imperial court, many things were evolving rapidly.
Just like the progress humanity had made in raising demonic beasts, only this time, what the human race had begun to raise was something far more terrifying, ghosts.
But thinking about it another way, it made sense. If even savage demonic beasts could be raised and tamed, then why could the souls of ghosts not be kept in captivity? However, the technology for raising ghostly demons was probably still far from perfected. Otherwise, the relevant records would not have been guarded so tightly by the major powers, to the point that even he, the Third Young Master, knew none of the details.
After thinking for a moment, Xu Yuan turned his eyes and quietly asked Ran Qingmo beside him, “Ran Qingmo, does your Celeste Sword Sect have something like this?”
Ran Qingmo looked back at him. She seemed a little hesitant, but in the end, she still nodded. “Yes. Master took me to see it before. But... but it wasn’t nearly this large.”
“Heh.” Hearing this, the Sage’s remnant soul gave a soft laugh in Xu Yuan’s mind and said in a low voice, “How can those who come later compete with the one who first brings about change?”
Xu Yuan’s gaze sharpened. A trace of surprise appeared in his eyes as he asked inwardly, Mister, what do you mean by the one who first brings about change?
The Sage’s remnant soul fell silent for a moment. Then, with a hint of appreciation in his voice, he chuckled softly. “The formation that isolates the ghost fog was created by that Institute of Applied Research within your Chancellor’s Manor. Among countless living beings, there is truly no shortage of astonishing talents. This sort of formation is the first of its kind.”
The Institute of Applied Research... Xu Yuan silently committed the name to memory. Once he had time, he definitely had to go take a look.
The previous Skyfone and now this formation capable of isolating ghost fog were both creations with the potential to overturn an entire era.
After thinking briefly, Xu Yuan suddenly asked, How do you know about this?
The Sage’s remnant soul answered as if it were only natural, “When your elder brother said earlier that he would use demonic beast souls to help restore my soul power, I casually asked about it, and he answered.”
As he spoke, the Sage’s remnant soul paused, then laughed with deep meaning. “Your elder brother stands above this age, and that Institute of Applied Research also has such dazzling talents. I truly am growing more and more curious about that father of yours.”
Xu Yuan neither agreed nor disagreed. He simply smiled inwardly and replied, “When I return to the capital, you’ll naturally be able to meet my father. As for now, let’s follow that Old Ghost first and help you restore your soul power.”
