Chapter 32 (Part 2): What the Reeds Hide

A wave of intense cold traveled across the pool. The surface water rapidly crystallized, thick sheets of ice spreading from the banks toward the center, trapping the submerged weeds in a solid grip. Mia’s breath came out ragged even as she cast it — the spell was pulling hard at reserves she didn’t have much of to spare.

The serpent, caught mid-dive beneath the sudden ice cap, slammed against the frozen surface from below.

CRACK!

The ice fractured, but the delay was enough. Forced to break through to breathe, it erupted through the ice sheets, its massive body thrashing as it tried to clear the frozen debris.

"Now, Ember!" Mia cast again without pausing. "[Wind Burst!]"

A concentrated gale blasted across the clearing, blowing away the spray and clearing Ember’s line of sight completely.

Ember didn’t rush. He drew his bowstring back to his cheekbone, feeling the tension in his shoulder blades.

Don’t shoot where it is. Shoot where it has to go.

The serpent reared back to strike at Mia, its jaws opening wide to release a jet of pressurized water. Its long, pale underbelly exposed itself — and right beneath its jaw, a small gap between the emerald scales flickered in the moonlight.

Ember held his breath. The world shrank down to the width of his arrow shaft. The wind, the freezing water on his boots, the sound of Mia’s chanting — all of it faded into background noise.

Release.

The arrow flew true.

It drove deep into the soft, unarmored tissue beneath the serpent’s jaw, sinking up to the fletching.

The serpent let out an ear-splitting shriek, its body convulsing violently as it crashed sideways across the broken ice. It thrashed once, twice, dragging itself half onto the bank as if it meant to keep fighting, tail carving a deep furrow through the mud — before its pale blue eyes finally dulled, its massive frame going still, then dissolving into drifting motes of light.

Ember sank back against a mossy rock, his bow resting across his knees as his chest heaved. Golden light washed over him, wiping away the fatigue in his limbs and restoring his drained stamina.

Mia collapsed flat on her back in the tall grass, her staff rolling away from her hand as she let out a loud, breathless laugh. "I... I thought for sure... we were going back to the spawn point."

Ember wiped a mix of sweat and river water from his forehead, looking at his hands. They were trembling slightly — not from fear, but from the raw surge of adrenaline. "That was... way too close."

"You hit the jaw gap mid-motion," she said, sitting up and looking at him with wide eyes. "Do you have any idea how hard that shot is?"

"Garrick always said a moving target isn’t hard," Ember said, letting out a ragged exhale. "It’s the part where it’s trying to eat you that ruins your aim."

Mia chuckled softly, leaning against her staff. "Remind me to buy that old man a drink if we survive his curriculum."

Where the serpent had fallen, a single object remained half-buried in the churned mud — a fist-sized sphere of translucent crystal, swirling with an internal blue light like captured liquid.

[Item Obtained]

Rare Mana Core (Aquatic) ×1

Mia picked it up, turning it slowly. "A genuine Rare-rank core," she whispered, her eyes reflecting the crystal’s glow. "In Azure Shore, this would sell for at least two gold coins. Or it could enchant a Tier-2 weapon with water affinity."

"Take it for your staff," Ember said, pushing the core toward her. "Without that ice spell, I’d be digestion by now."

Mia tossed it lightly in her hand, then handed it back. "We split everything fifty-fifty, Ember. We sell it together or turn it into gear for both of us. Don’t go noble on me."

Ember caught it with a faint smile. "Fair enough."

The rest of the serpent hadn’t gone with it. Emerald scales, thick as dinner plates, still lay scattered across the ice and mud, and the massive coiled body had left a clear shape pressed into the frozen bank.

"That won’t last," Mia said, nodding at the fading outline. "Might as well not waste it."

Ember knelt and got to work, knife finding the natural seam between scales, prying them free in clean sections instead of fighting the grain. His experience handling meat and breaking down cuts for his parents’ dinner table hadn’t prepared him for something this size, but the logic was the same — work with the material, not against it.

Mia held pieces steady when he needed a second pair of hands, wrinkling her nose at the venom sac but not looking away.

"Definitely worth the trouble," Ember said, wiping his blade clean.

Mia picked up one of the scales and turned it beneath the moonlight. "These could make excellent armor plates."

While Mia inspected the haul, Ember waded back into the murky shallows to retrieve his fallen shafts. He pulled his first arrow from a water-logged root, sighed at the bent iron tip, and tucked the salvageable fletching back into his quiver.

As he reached down to cup a handful of cold spring water to wash the mud from his face, his fingers brushed against something hard beneath the mud.

He paused.

The riverbed here should have been soft silt and decomposed plant matter. But what his fingers had struck felt cold, solid, and unnaturally smooth.

He knelt deeper into the shallow water, clearing away a thick layer of wet moss and black earth.

His hand caught on an edge — a perfectly straight, sharp forty-five-degree stone corner.

"Mia," he called out, his tone shifting from casual relief to sudden alertness.

"Find another drop?" she asked, walking over while wiping her staff clean.

"Look at this."

Ember used his hunting knife to scrape away a wide section of the mud layer. Beneath the silt lay a massive slab of grey stone. It wasn’t a natural river rock; it was cut granite, fitted seamlessly against another matching block.

Carved into the surface were deep, flowing grooves — symbols that didn’t match any system language they had encountered in Azure Shore. They looked like stylized waves weaving around a central crest.

Mia dropped to her knees beside him, running her thumb over the deep groove. "Look at the edge. Natural stone doesn’t shear at ninety degrees. This was cut — and enchanted."

"Look further out," Ember said, standing up and pointing across the pool.

Now that they were looking for it, the landscape revealed what the night — and the mud, and the water, and however many years of undisturbed silence — had hidden.

Ten yards away, half-buried in the mud and wrapped in thick willow roots, stood a square stone pillar, its top broken off at an angle. Beyond it, protruding from the reeds like giant broken ribs, were the moss-covered arches of a collapsed wall.

The entire pool sat inside the courtyard of a massive, submerged structure.

A cold wind blew through the tall reeds, carrying a sound like a low, hollow sigh through the stone ruins.

"The three question marks on your map," Ember said quietly, turning to Mia. "The ones you couldn’t explain when we planned this trip. This is what was out here."

Mia didn’t answer right away. She pulled out her hand-drawn map, laying it over her knee. The mark she had made earlier sat directly over their current position.

"I thought it was just an elite animal den," she whispered, her eyes wide as she scanned the stone arches rising from the mist. "This isn’t on the regional map at all. Buried under this much silt and water, it wouldn’t be — nobody exploring the surface would ever have found it."

As they moved toward the center of the sunken courtyard, clearing away the overgrown vines, the moonlight struck a low mound near the base of the broken pillar.

A wide set of stone stairs descended straight down into the earth, disappearing into absolute blackness beneath the water line. Ancient-looking runes lined the top step, worn nearly smooth. They flickered once, twice, then settled into a low, faint violet pulse.

[System Notification]

First Discovery Bonus: +100 EXP

Warning: Recommended Level 6+. Proceed with caution.

Ember and Mia stood at the edge of the descending stairs, looking down into the dark, silent depths beneath the marsh.

Neither spoke for a long time.

Mia leaned on her staff, a quiet laugh escaping her as she looked down the stairwell. "Still think this was just a herb run?"

Ember looked at the faint violet runes pulsing beneath the dark water, then down at the warning still sitting at the edge of his vision.

"Recommended Level 6," he said. "We’re barely four."

"So we don’t go in tomorrow." Mia said it like it wasn’t even a question worth arguing. "We come back when we’re ready. More rope. Better arrows. A few more levels between us and whatever’s actually down there."

Something about that steadied him more than confidence would have. "Garrick would agree with you."

"Smart man." Mia opened her system menu and marked the location, a small pin blinking to life on her map. "But I’m not waiting forever, Ember. Whatever this place is — we found it first."

Ember looked back down the stairs one more time, then at the quiver slung over his shoulder, half-emptied and full of bent shafts.

"Then we get ready," he said. "Starting tomorrow."
