The salt breeze sweeping off Azure Shore felt like a warm hand against Ember’s face after three days in the damp, claustrophobic chill of the subterranean ruins.
They reached the outskirts of the coastal settlement just as the afternoon sun hit the harbor water, turning the waves into blinding sheets of beaten gold. Travelers and traders crowded the stone thoroughfare, their loud bargaining and the clatter of wagon wheels jarring against the quiet stillness that had settled in Ember’s ears since leaving the Sunken Archives.
"I forgot what sun felt like," Mia muttered, pulling down the hood of her damp cloak. Her hair was still stiff with dried river spray, but the exhausted slump in her shoulders had begun to lift the moment they cleared the marshlands. "I also forgot how much fish this harbor smells like."
"It smells like trade," Ember said, adjusting the heavy travel pack on his shoulders. The Deep Basin Serpent Egg sat wrapped in wool at the center of his pack, its slow, subtle warmth pressing against his spine like an extra pulse. "And trade means a workshop."
They headed straight for Traveler’s Rest, a three-story inn nestled near the craft quarter that offered private workshop rentals in its rear court. After paying the innkeeper for two rooms and a four-hour block at an alchemy and armory bench, Ember dropped his pack onto the heavy oak workbench with a dull thud.
He sat on a low wooden stool, letting out a long breath as he unbuckled his forearm guards, his thumb pressing against the dull bruise where Numbed venom had settled. Patching himself up in the damp dark had nudged his First Aid skill up another notch, but the arm still throbbed.
Before touching a single item in his pack, Ember called up his status display.

Level 8. The jump in stats was clean, fully restoring his depleted reserves and leaving five free attribute points sitting in reserve.
Pushing Agility to 20 would hit the draw-speed threshold needed to kite elite mobs, but if the Ancient Arrow schematic required a Dexterity or Intelligence baseline to process, he’d be locked out of his own boss drop. Until he checked the recipe requirements at the workbench, those points stayed banked.
He glanced past the skill list with a wry exhale. He could still feel Footwork in his knees from six hours balanced on a half-frozen ledge above the Glaciercoil, while Stealth and Observation had grown in the quiet downwind approaches he’d lost count of. It only looked like progress now, laid out in cold percentages on a screen.
A second tap pulled up the rest — Quick Shot sitting at a fresh Common Lv.1, and Trapcraft a notch further along at 2.4%.
He closed the interface and turned to the table. "Let’s see what four floors of drowned stone actually yielded."
Together, they began unbuckling satchels and clearing space on the stone-topped worktable. First came the lower-level drops: two dozen iridescent Ripple Serpent Scales, a dozen translucent Slime Cores, three bundles of Frostwater Herb, a handful of Serpent Fangs pulled from half a dozen different kills, cured hides from the Frostscale, Toad, and Glaciercoil encounters, a scattering of Crystal Shell fragments and claws, and the single glowing shard of a Frozen Mana Shard pried from the Glaciercoil’s corpse.
Mia arranged the herbs on drying racks while Ember sorted the scales and hides. His hands moved with clean, practiced efficiency, wiping the residual grime from each piece without scoring the surface beneath — his elevated Gathering skill making the difference between salvage and scrap.
Then came the heavy haul.
Ember unrolled a square of oiled leather, laying out four massive, metallic-scaled plates recovered from the fallen boss.

Item
Name: Corrupted Guardian Scale ×4
Rank: Rare
Type: Crafting Material
Description: Armored scale plates harvested from the Corrupted Guardian of the Deep Basin. Possesses exceptional physical density and inherent magic resistance, though tainted by residual corruption. Requires advanced smithing to process.
Mia let out a low whistle at the sight of them, already doing the mental math on what four intact plates from an Elite Boss would fetch.
Beside the scales, Ember set down a jagged, glowing shard of ice that radiated a sharp, biting cold.

Item
Name: Frozen Core Fragment ×1
Rank: Rare
Type: Crafting Material
Description: A crystallized fragment of condensed elemental mana extracted from the heart of the Deep Basin Guardian. Unstable, but immensely valuable for high-tier cryo-enchanting or alchemy.
Mia set her own prize beside the materials: a thin, frost-rimed shard of crystal recovered from the stone chest near the dais, its surface etched with faint, half-legible spell-lines that pulsed weakly under her touch.

Item
Name: Frostwater Spell Fragment
Rank: Uncommon
Type: Magic Skill Fragment
Description: A fractured piece of an ancient spellcasting matrix, still resonant with latent Water and Frost mana. Sustained practice with Mana Control may gradually unlock the Frost/Water technique sealed within.
"The fragment’s yours," Ember said, pushing it toward her. "It’s keyed to Mana Control — you kept the boss pinned in Phase 2 and bought the time for the ceiling drop. Not even a question."
Mia picked up the fragment, her fingers tracing the faint runes still glowing along its cracked edge. She set it beside her satchel, then looked at the pile of Guardian Scales and the glowing Frozen Core Fragment.
"We split the Ripple Serpent scales down the middle," she said, pulling a brass scale balance across the table. "And the Slime Cores. But these Guardian materials—Ember, your bowstring took the brunt of that fight, and you took the schematic from the alcove."
He drew the wooden cylinder containing the Ancient Forest Arrow schematic from his tunic and laid it on the table. "The schematic is for arrows. I can actually use it once my Crafting hits the threshold. But the Guardian Scales are worth a fortune in raw silver or defense plating. Take two of them."
Mia crossed her arms and shook her head firmly, leaning back against the alchemy bench. "No. I got the fragment. It’s not even usable yet — I’ll have to grind Mana Control for who knows how long before anything comes of it — but it’s built for exactly the tree I’m already growing. Two scale plates I’d just end up selling to a merchant."
He held her gaze for a moment, testing her resolve, before nodding once. "Fair enough. I’ll cover our workshop fee and the lodge turn-in expenses out of my end."
"Deal," Mia said, a faint smile touching her mouth. She gestured toward the far end of the bench, where Ember had carefully lifted the heavy wool cloth away from his pack’s center compartment. "Now, what about your other drop?"
The Deep Basin Serpent Egg rested in a shallow wooden bowl Ember had borrowed from the inn yard, its shell a pale, translucent indigo, smooth as polished quartz, with dark vein-like lines tracing beneath the surface.

Item
Name: Deep Basin Serpent Egg
Rank: Rare
Type: Companion Item (Dormant Egg)
Description: A preserved egg of an ancient Deep Basin aquatic serpent species, kept dormant within a natural crystalline shell. Requires sustained, carefully balanced mana incubation to hatch. Its true species remains unidentified.
"So, are you planning on hatching that, or starting an exotic omelet shop?" Mia asked, leaning against the alchemy table.
"It froze my water pouch when I put it down," Ember replied deadpan. "I don’t think it wants to be cooked."
He reached into his pouch and pulled out three small, unrefined raw mana stones gathered from the crystal veins near the ritual chamber. Intending to clear space for his gathering tools, he set the dull blue stones on the wooden workbench, barely two inches from the base of the egg.
The moment the raw mana stones touched the wood, the air temperature around the table dropped instantly.
A thin, crackling coat of frost spread across the oak surface in rapid, fern-like patterns. The condensation on Mia’s glass potion vials froze solid, turning white.
From inside the egg, a deep blue pulse flared — once, twice — in a rhythmic, double-beat pattern. Visible threads of faint blue light pulled away from the raw mana stones, streaming directly into the egg’s shell. The stones lost their dull color, graying into brittle, spent ash within seconds.
Mia took a step back, her hand moving instinctively toward her staff. "It just absorbed raw environmental mana."
"It didn’t just absorb it," Ember noted, watching the frost slowly thaw as the egg’s pulse settled back into its slow, patient rhythm. "It fed on it."
He laid a hand against the shell. It wasn’t freezing to the touch now, but held a deep, resonant cold — like holding a smooth river stone pulled from deep mountain water.
"We don’t know how to balance aquatic mana," Ember said softly, looking at the grayed ash of the spent mana stones. "Feed it the wrong element or force too much raw energy at once, and we could ruin the shell."
"Or hatch something very angry," Mia added dryly. "And neither of our Crafting or Gathering skills cover beast husbandry. We need someone who actually knows how ancient materials and wild eggs work."
He worked the egg back into its wool padding, securing it tightly inside his pack alongside the four Guardian scales and the Ancient Arrow schematic.
"The Lodge first," Ember said, standing up and buckling his quiver back onto his hip. "Clara can process the dungeon turn-in, and Garrick knows more about wild beasts and monster armor than anyone else in Azure Shore."
