The relentless wind south of the ridge whipped Ember’s hair across his face, drying his throat before he’d even taken twenty steps into the tall grass. The terrain here was punishing—long, rolling waves of turf broken by jagged outcrops of pale stone pushing through the soil like fractured teeth.
Kael’s directions had sounded straightforward enough—south of the ridge, where the wind doesn’t break rhythm—but standing out in the open, Ember’s legs already throbbed from fighting the uneven ground. The gale never stopped long enough for anything to sit still.
Recognizing the rock formations as natural funnels for fast predators, Ember crouched between two granite boulders, his knees popping in the quiet air. He uncoiled his snare wire, staking low-tension traps across the narrowest gap. His fingers were stiff from the chill, but he forced himself to check each knot twice. If a high-level monster caught him out here, he needed control over the ground.
He was driving the second stake home when a sharp tremor ran through the soles of his boots.
Ember flinched, scrambling backward as a shadow blurred through the gap. Thin, membrane-like fins along its spine caught the light in a pale green flash.

Monster
Name: Windfin Lizard
Level: 6
Rank: Common
HP: 100%
Behavior: Territorial / Agile
Special Attack:
Description: A small reptilian monster with thin fin-like membranes running along its back. Prefers rocky areas near flowing water, using wind currents to move with remarkable speed.
The creature didn’t give him time to catch his breath. Raw wind pressure slammed into Ember’s chest as the lizard launched its charge. He twisted aside on reflex, Footwork carrying him clear, but the displaced air tore past hard enough to sting his cheek like grit, leaving a faint, burning scratch.
His heart hammered violently against his ribs. The lizard banked hard against a boulder, claws tearing up dirt as its back fins caught a draft, snapping its body upward into a sweeping arc. Ember drew and loosed, but the sudden draft threw his shaft off, sending it skittering uselessly against the rock face.
The monster swerved for a second pass, coming in low and fast. Ember forced his trembling muscles to hold still, stepping back just half a pace into the narrow gap—guiding the lizard’s arc directly toward his setup.
The lizard committed to its charge. A metallic snap rang out as its foreleg caught the snare wire.
The tension flipped the monster violently into the dirt. It thrashed frantically, tail whipping the stone as it tried to scramble free.
Ember didn’t wait for his heart rate to slow. Guided by Observation, he spotted the soft, unarmored spot where the back membranes met the neck. He drew to his ear, held his breath, and loosed. The arrow drove clean through the joint.
The creature gave one violent shudder and went still.
Ember let out a long, shaky breath, letting his bow hand drop. He knelt by the fallen monster, wiping cold sweat from his forehead before drawing his skinning knife. Working carefully around the spine, he cut through the fibrous muscle to harvest the materials by hand, taking care not to ruin the wind-charged membranes.
Obtained:
• Windfin Lizard Tendon ×2
• Windfin Lizard Fin ×3
He wrapped the dense, humming tendons and thin fins in oiled cloth, stowing them deep in his pack.
With the choke point secured, Ember moved into the open meadow to track his main objective. Squinting against the wind-glare, he spotted a pale green, semi-transparent shape bouncing along a gust fifteen feet up before rolling across the grass.

Monster
Name: Gale Slime
Level: 2
Rank: Common
HP: 100%
Behavior: Skittish / Drifting
Special Attack:
Description: A pale green, semi-translucent slime whose body traps pockets of air, letting it drift and bounce along strong gusts rather than crawl. Rarely aggressive; scatters on the wind when threatened.
For nearly an hour, Ember tracked its erratic bounce, his eyes burning from the constant strain. He cataloged where the gusts funneled and where they died, until the pattern finally clicked.

The slime always slowed at the base of one specific outcrop. Ember backed up to the stone, rested his aching shoulders against the rock, and waited.
When the slime drifted back into the gap, Ember drew halfway. Instead of fighting the wind, he activated Quick Shot. A brief, sharp chill washed behind his temples as 5 MP left his pool, forcing his hand to snap forward faster than conscious thought.
The arrow pinned the slime cleanly. Ember dropped to his knees, quickly uncapping glass vials to harvest the shimmering, fluid body before the wind mana evaporated.
He secured two more slimes using the same rhythm. A sudden draft ruined his fourth attempt, spilling fluid across the dirt, but he caught a fifth clean.

Ember blinked away the blue notification box, leaving it unopened. His mind was too tired to process skill branches safely out in the wild.
As he sealed the final vial, the sweet, heavy scent of concentrated wind fluid coated his fingers. Before he could wipe his hands on his tunic, a broad shadow cut fast across the sunlit grass.

Monster
Name: Razorwing Finch
Level: 7
Rank: Common
HP: 100%
Behavior: Aggressive / Aerial Hunter
Special Attack:
Description: A predatory bird nesting around cliffs and cave entrances. Attracted to concentrated wind mana; its lightweight body maneuvers effortlessly through narrow spaces, making its sharp feathers dangerous even at range.
Drawn by the rich scent of the harvested fluid, the finch folded its broad wings and dove straight for Ember’s hands.
A salvo of hardened feathers hissed through the air. Ember threw himself sideways into the dirt, rolling hard. The feather projectiles buried an inch deep into the turf where his ribcage had been a half-second earlier, showering his face with loose dirt.
Scrambling to his feet with his lungs burning, Ember tucked the sealed vial into his belt and drew his bow in a single fluid motion. The bird was already wheeling around for another pass at the scent.
Predicting its dive arc, Ember loosed half a second early. The arrow clipped the joint of the finch’s left wing. The bird spiraled out of control with a harsh screech, losing the wind entirely before slamming hard into the tall grass.
Ember closed the distance quickly, finishing the creature with his hunting knife. Breathing heavily, he sat back on his heels. He used his thick leather gloves to carefully pluck the razored quills from the wings, then dressed the bird for usable meat, taking care not to cut his bare skin on the sharp plumage.

Obtained:
• Razorwing Finch Feather ×5
• Razorwing Finch Meat ×1
He wrapped the metallic feathers thoroughly to protect the rest of his gear, then packed the fresh meat away.
Ember sat on a low stone for a few minutes, pulling his waterskin from his belt and taking a long, slow drink to clear the grit from his throat. His limbs felt heavy, his shoulder throbbed where he had slammed into the turf, and his fingers were stained with dirt and slime residue.
After retrieving his snare wire from the rocks, Ember tightened the straps of his pack and turned back toward Azure Shore—two elements down, two to go, and a long walk ahead to sleep it off.
