MMORPG: Surviving a Death Game with a Glitched System
Chapter 25: Walking on a TightropeAsh grimaced as he narrowly avoided slipping off the chain while trying not to catch fire.
’This would be much easier if she could just one-shot everything...’
The princess had used [Spirit Heal] on the first enemy they’d encountered, and Ash had witnessed the fish bastard pop like a balloon before vanishing entirely, its remains scattering like ash.
While she’d obviously unleashed the power so Ash could bear witness to her power, the strain on her body had been equally apparent. Since then, she’d taken to riding on Demitra’s back as they made the perilous journey toward another jagged island rising from the sea of magma.
’She was in quite the rough shape when I found her...’
Meaning she must have used the ability shortly before he found her if she still couldn’t use it again.
’I wonder who, or what, she was fighting to push her that far... Especially with Demitra at her side.’
Stepping carefully, Ash shot a glance at the wolf he just couldn’t seem to get a read on, despite their supposed bond.
Ash didn’t have much room to talk, but he had grasped one clear truth:
’Neither of them is being fully transparent.’
They were hiding something.
Still, they didn’t seem intent on harming him directly. At least, not yet.
Ash ducked and protected his tunic as best he could as a gigantic winged fish appeared out of the haze and soared over him, nearly slamming straight into his body.
’How do they even get this high?!’
It wasn’t like they could knock him off, but...
’It has fire coming out of its gills!’
Setting aside the question of how in the world it got this high, Ash felt like fire spelled bad news for him. There wasn’t much he could do to protect his cloth tunic or wooden sandals.
’Actually, I’m surprised they’ve made it this far.’
’I really need an upgrade.’
And that wasn’t an exaggeration. His tunic was only one or two blows away from complete destruction.
’But seriously, one would expect a bird to reach these chains, not a damned fish...’
It wasn’t as though the four chains running through the zone hung low. They stretched across the sky from anchor points far beyond sight, suspended high above the scattered mountainous islands. Only the tallest peaks rose close enough to reach them without the aid of a skill.
’This whole place is strange...’
From its layout to the creatures living within it.
Demitra had said something called The Sentry was constantly making rounds looking for intruders. A gigantic ’monstrosity’ it would be better they didn’t cross paths with. A beast not even she said she could deal with easily.
As for its layout...
Thankfully, the jagged island Ash had appeared on was one of the tallest in the zone, its peak rising close enough to the chain that they could mount it with relative ease. That height was also why he’d been able to see nearly the entire temple above the surrounding islands despite the vast distance.
Had he appeared on one of the lower islands, or at the bottom of the island he’d been on, the taller ones surrounding it would have blocked his view, leaving him able to see little more than the nearby peaks.
In any case...
Their current objective was to follow the chain until they reached another island tall enough to dismount and climb back on without much difficulty. There, they’d gather whatever resources they could before continuing toward the anchor point.
Once at the anchor point, they’d have to sever the binding, then move on to the next chain and repeat the process until all four sources had been dealt with.
Then, at last, they’d have to reach the temple and undo the final lock on the seal.
’But seriously... how much longer will it be until I can get off this damn chain?’
As if the world were answering him, the visage of black rock appeared through the haze not too far below.
