MMORPG: Surviving a Death Game with a Glitched System
Chapter 68: One Man’s "Would"Turns out... the Great Spirit of Fire was their mother. It wasn’t a "he" at all.
She had since passed from the world.
But in her passing, her power had transferred to the King of Evercrest, Idolan Frichella.
And, as it turned out, their relationship was the root of everything — one man’s union with a Great Spirit.

Idolan continued his ’boasting’ about his adventures with the Great Spirit, but eventually moved on to something that actually mattered.
A decade ago, when Vera and Cross were still young, the Great Spirit of Winter learned of their existence.
Winter, who loathed humans more than anything in the world, couldn’t tolerate what the Great Spirit of Fire had done. Not only had Fire taken a human lover, but she’d borne children with him.
By then, Vera’s power had already grown enough to begin causing chaos throughout the kingdom.
Anyway...
Winter, Demitra, came to Evercrest intending to destroy the nation and punish Fire.
Then she discovered Vera’s capabilities.
Captivated by the girl’s strange abilities, Winter abandoned her original objective. Instead, she gambled on a far greater possibility: using Vera to achieve her ultimate desire.
The destruction of humanity.
A terrifyingly vast goal, yet her reasoning was surprisingly simple.
"You see, visitor, spirits are manifestations of the world’s desire, in a sense. And humans... we, as a species, have harmed the world terribly, causing it far more grief than good."
After a short pause, Idolan added:
"Simply put, the world wills spirits to kill humans, and so they are naturally driven to do so. However, they aren’t completely bound by that instinct. Fire is a prime example. She eventually came to believe that humans weren’t quite as terrible as the world made us out to be..."
Idolan cast his gaze down toward Cross.
"In any case, like most Great Spirits — or any immensely powerful being, for that matter — Winter had reached a plateau in her growth long ago. Her strength is great, but even she wasn’t powerful enough to wipe out humanity alone."
His expression darkened.
"Vera’s existence changed that."
Ash’s eyes narrowed as the silver-haired king continued:
"Her abilities could allow Winter to overcome that limit. Through Vera, Winter could begin growing stronger again."
Realization struck Ash, though he’d already surmised it, he now knew the reason.
’But to draw out Vera’s power to its fullest, they need to be contracted. And Vera needs to be strong enough to withstand that contract.’
Once that happened, Winter could continue growing until...
Quite possibly...
She became strong enough to bring humanity to an end.
And fulfill the world’s long-held desire.
Idolan continued:
"After learning of Winter’s goal, Fire and I sought to protect both humanity and our daughter..."
For some reason, Idolan paused.
Ash decided to fill the silence.
"I take it you lost."
"As you can see, we didn’t exactly win. However... we were able to seal her away. Fire sacrificed her existence to create the seal you are in now. And to keep a seal holding back something of that nature intact even after her death, I became a vessel for her power, serving as the crux that sustains it."
Idolan paused again, his gaze finding Cross.
At that moment, the Silver Prince stirred slightly, then added:
"That’s... not nearly all."
’How long has he been awake...?’
Ash looked down at the sleepy prince.
"Nice of you to wake up. But stay where you are if you wish to live."
Cross scoffed and clicked his tongue.
"...Tch."
But he did as he was told.
Idolan laughed.
"You’ve been tamed nicely, Cross."
Cross grumbled back:
"You’d respect his word too if you knew what that psychopath was capable of... Don’t judge his power by his mana or spirit. Judge it by that devilish smirk."
Ash stared down at the man.
"Such kind words..."
Idolan cleared his throat.
"Ahem. As I was saying... We sealed her, but Winter managed to get one over on us before we could finish the job."
Idolan clenched his fist, then said through his teeth:
"She created her own seal... She sealed Vera, then trapped herself alongside her. By the time Fire and I acted, Winter was already beyond our reach. So rather than sealing Winter directly, Fire’s seal was placed over Winter’s — locking both Winter and Vera away beneath it."
Grimacing, Cross added:
"Were it not for her isolated space, a place I couldn’t enter, I’d have killed her already."
Ash scratched his chin.
’So... that tundra was created by Demitra.’
It wasn’t part of the fire realm at all. It was a separate seal, loosely connected to it.
’Demitra can travel between the two seals, but Cross and the Hounds can’t. Or rather... "couldn’t."’
A stalemate of sorts.
And with Vera isolated inside that tundra, Demitra had been free to shape the story however she pleased — somehow overcoming the communication issue between them.
That was how Vera came to believe they’d accidentally frozen the kingdom because of her power, and that her own father had sealed her away because of it.
The story contained pieces of the truth, but Demitra had twisted who was responsible and why.
Worse...
"Why did Winter act now... and why have you not told Vera the truth?"
Cross, still on the ground, responded.
"Simple... I found a way into the fiend’s seal. She may not have her power suppressed there, but I can still kill her as long as Vera is out of the way. Winter had no choice but to come up here and break free..."
’I see. You’re likely the one that injured her so gravely when I first met her.’
It was either Cross or the Hounds with him. Demitra had alluded to bodies dissapearing from Vera’s curse, so it was likely Cross hadn’t infiltrated alone.
Cross stared daggers at Ash before continuing:
"That should’ve been suicide. The chains form a barrier around the temple, preventing anyone Father or I haven’t recognized from approaching. The fiend never would succeed in destroying them all while having to face me. At least, it had no chance until you showed up making me unable to slay it. As for Vera..."
Cross trailed off, and Idolan picked up where he left off:
"It would not be easy to convince her; she’s thoroughly brainwashed. More importantly, Winter has taken her hostage. Cross tried to convince her in the past, when they’d come to this part of the seal before, but Winter showed no hesitation about killing Vera if she slipped from her grasp."
’Kill Vera...? Isn’t Vera the wolf’s entire purpose? Even more... her lifeline?’
Ash didn’t exactly understand every detail or motivation, but the picture was coming together.
