Ash lay sprawled on the black mist as the string of system messages trickled to an end.

It almost felt anticlimactic.

In truth, Ash had played little part in that final sequence.

Then again, he simply hadn’t stood a chance of involving himself in a conflict between such powerful beings — especially when they already had him figured out.

’Ah...’

He didn’t know whether these items were rewards for completing the trial, merely select drops he had failed to recover, or some combination of the two, but one stood out: the [Tome of Fundamentals: Class Selection].

’Finally...’

It seemed it wasn’t that he needed to reach Level 5 before selecting a class, but that selecting a class was the condition he needed to fulfill to reach Level 5.

He was practically certain of it.

Otherwise, receiving the tome now made no sense.

[You have equipped [Tome of Fundamentals: Class Selection]]

Summoning the book into his hand, he studied its plain-looking cover. Then, he pried it open and looked at the first page.

The page was covered in some archaic language he couldn’t read, but there was a depiction of a knight holding a sword and shield beside the words.

’The Warrior Class.’

Ash flipped the page.

The next contained the same unreadable words, but depicted a robed figure holding a staff.

’Mage...’

The following two pages depicted a man holding twin daggers and another holding a bow.

’Assassin and Archer.’

Finally, Ash flipped through the remainder of the tome, only to find every page beyond the first four bound by strange, moving chains of ink that crawled across the eggshell-colored paper.

Ash closed the tome and set it beside him as he stared at the blue flux flowing in streams above him.

He’d already had a class in mind that he was going to choose. His recent encounter had only helped solidify that decision.

Having experienced the chained stagger of hell twice now, he had little desire to deliberately enter close combat. Even if he now possessed a weapon like [Sealed Fate], he felt the Warrior and Assassin classes were off the table.

Besides...

’Just because I’m not a certain class doesn’t mean I stop being able to use a weapon.’

From the knowledge injected into his mind at the start of the tutorial, Ash knew that selecting a class merely granted increased proficiency with its associated weapons; it didn’t prevent him from wielding weapons belonging to other classes.

In other words, he’d retain the same skill he currently possessed with the sword.

With those two out of the way, that left Mage or Archer.

Of the two, it wasn’t such a clear-cut decision.

Though there was a significant factor pushing him to consider Mage.

The [Tome of Wisdom: Vortex], which likely contained the ability used by the Soulless Wanderer.

Undeniably, the ability seemed insane for someone like Ash.

After all, just as he’d been trapped by it while fighting the Seal Guardian, it was likely that anyone who approached him could be caught in it, giving him the perfect opportunity to activate [Focus] and strike.

The main problem with that particular spell was that it was costly and short-ranged. Simply holding the summoned tome allowed him to sense the spell contained within — a heavily watered-down version of the original. Even so, it seemed inconceivably valuable.

But there was a slight caveat...

No, not slight.

There was a huge one.

[Focus] was currently the only ability that canceled his glitch.

But...

There was no guarantee that [Vortex] or any future spell he learned wouldn’t do the same.

Ash surmised [Focus] canceled out his glitch because it spread his mana throughout his body. [Vortex], as Cross had described it, enhanced its user while simultaneously exerting mana on the surrounding area. This likely meant the spell would render Ash fully tangible for its duration.

Of course, having another way to make himself tangible wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing, but [Vortex] was unnecessarily risky and opened too many avenues for exploitation. Given how visually conspicuous the spell was, anyone who uncovered his glitch would know exactly when he was vulnerable.

Besides, judging by Cross’s stone stakes and Vera’s [Surge], most spells were likely visible and required focus and moving slow to use, creating even more potential tells in future spells and vunerability.

Ash wasn’t exactly one to shy away from such risk, but another path offered far less volatility.

A path where the factors remained firmly within his control.

’Archer.’

Not only did the theory of archery pair perfectly with [Focus], but it also offered the greatest range of the four classes.

And, as long as no mana-sensitive freaks like Cross were around, no one would know when he was about to unleash an attack — unlike if he chose Mage.

Sitting up, Ash pulled the tome onto his lap and thumbed through the pages again.

He traced a finger along the edges of the Archer page, then hooked his claw beneath it and pulled, tearing it free.

As the messages rang through his head, Ash experienced a fleeting feeling that went entirely against his sense of self...
