MMORPG: Surviving a Death Game with a Glitched System
Chapter 99: Five AgainAsh tried his luck with a few of his questions, but as expected, she’d declined to answer or claimed she couldn’t.
He failed to get an answer on what happened to the creatures of the seal, what the Great Spirits were, and why they had designated titles — Demitra had said she’d ’earned the Winter throne.’
Why was she calling herself a ’goddess’ and not a ’spirit’? Why could spirits interact with him?
Why was his body the way it was in the first place? Was there a reason?
Was there a way to permanently undo his glitch?
Where were the other races? Was there another in this zone?
Plus a few more things, mostly regarding the zones. Namely, he was trying to get an idea of their size, as well as where the other zones were.
Yet, little to nothing — a whole lot of questions and not a lot of answers.
But, there was one thing he’d gotten a sort of answer on...
"Vera, the Soulless Wanderers, they’re former citizens of Evercrest, are they not?"
After looking away and staring off into the distance, she said,
"One could say..."
"How did they become ’soulless’?"
Vera’s expression grew forlorn.
"Please, don’t ask that of me."
It was the one time she seemed to reject an answer not for some future purpose, but out of her own regret.
After it became obvious he couldn’t squeeze much more information out of her, he decided to humor her vain desire for camaraderie.
Though she kept most details about herself to herself, Ash was really the only one doing much of the explaining.
There was something he learned from it, though: perhaps because of her prophetic abilities, she knew of Earth and the incoming mass transmigration.
She also knew the world had been presented to the transmigrators as a game — not that she elaborated on whether it was a game.
That was the topic she’d been most guarded about.
Eventually, though, she looked off to her side and whispered,
"Ah, it seems our time has come to an end. Truly, Ashley Grave... you are a bold and insolent mortal."
With that, she was gone.
She vanished in a slight spray of mist, as if she’d never been there.
Ash stared at the empty air for a few moments before finally pushing off the arms of the onyx stone throne and standing.
[You have unequipped [Stone Throne]]
Dismissing it, he began his quiet trek up the mountain. As he walked, he dismissed [Whisper of the Wind] and equipped [Crown of the Defeated].
Not only did he want to be ready to stack it if he got ambushed, but he also didn’t want to become reliant on [Danger Sense]. Not to mention, the entirety of his last two days in the instance had been spent focusing on sensing Mana. While he wasn’t able to replicate anything close to [Danger Sense] with his current ability, his own senses would stagnate if he kept the helmet on.
Thankfully, it didn’t seem like he needed it on this journey either way, as he eventually made it to the edge of the clearing, where the Totem of the Dragonkin came into view.
’It’s changed a little...’
The Totem itself had changed color slightly; a portion near the tip was now a hot pink, a physical representation of its progression towards its next evolution and grand expansion, something he could even see using [Assessment].
[Totem of the Dragonkin] - [1.3%]
[Quest!] - [Feed the Totem Common-ranked ingredients](23/300)
That was all he could see, but he could sense that it had other functions, such as its ability to create structures within its radius if fed the necessary materials.
In any case, when the progress bar reached 100%, the structures it could create without assistance from specialists would vastly improve in integrity and design.
As for the ’grand expansion...’
While every little bit of progress toward 100% granted increased territory, once the bar filled, the territory would receive a singular massive increase in size.
As for the structures the Totem could currently build...
Ash didn’t truly know. He had an idea that controlling the function would unlock at the Totem’s next level. For now, it kind of did its own thing.
Speaking of it doing its own thing...
There were now two solid rings of wood extending in wide arcs around the Totem at the very edge of its range.
’I guess it happened when they finished a quest.’
Ash wasn’t entirely sure since he’d been MIA since day 1, but, at the very least, his Dragonkin contemporaries had not been entirely idle.
Just as Ash thought about them, a sudden change in his vision tore his attention to his peripheral.
The eight gray bars that had been frozen had morphed into sets of green and blue ones — all at varying lengths.
Éloi was at half HP, low on Mana.
Sandra was the opposite.
Claude was about 25% on both.
Nora was low on Mana with somewhat high HP.
’Ah...’
[You have equipped [Stone Throne]]
As much of a busybody as Ash was, he didn’t really have any intent on traveling about without his arm and his tail.
So, until they regrew and he was back in peak condition, he was going to sit and rest.
However, if the bars were colored again, that meant his party members might have come back into range — or that they’d finished the instance.
Either way, it was likely they were returning to the Totem.
As much as Ash needed to sleep, he didn’t want their reunion to happen like this.
Even if he wasn’t one for teamplay, if there was one thing he learned from the recent instance as well as his revelations about his glitch...
Going entirely solo was not an option.
Even if they held him back in some capacity, they would be useful in others.
After about twenty minutes of waiting, the silhouettes of four Dragonkin appeared on the ridge off in the distance, walking toward him.
