Chapter 141: Chapter 140: Warning

With Gu Qingyin and Huo Yunjing staring it down, the White Immortal didn’t dare resist or try any funny business. It could only obediently withdraw the wisp of demonic energy from Gugu’s throat before turning to Gu Qingyin and letting out a fawning cry.

Gu Qingyin was momentarily stunned. ’That’s it? This is a little too easy.’ She was suspicious but couldn’t just wake Gugu up to hear her speak.

She frowned slightly and said to Mao Mao, "Go back with it. You can return tomorrow morning once Gugu is able to speak. If she can’t..."

Mao Mao understood instantly. It shot the White Immortal a sinister grin, baring its fangs.

The White Immortal silently turned away and scurried off, trembling in fear.

Mao Mao immediately followed, its sharp claws making a CLICK-CLACK sound on the floor. To the White Immortal’s ears, it sounded as if those claws were ready to tear it to shreds at any moment.

’SOB... So scary!’

After tucking Gugu in, Gu Qingyin led Huo Yunjing back to the guest room to wash up and get ready for bed.

Gu Qingyin lay in bed while Huo Yunjing stood beside it, staring at her with wide, pleading eyes.

One minute, two minutes, three minutes... Gu Qingyin sighed inwardly before speaking. "Get on the bed. But you can’t get under the covers."

Huo Yunjing happily climbed onto the bed, his clothes instantly morphing into black silk pajamas. He wrapped his arms around Gu Qingyin over the blankets, holding her in a full embrace as his eyes curved with satisfaction.

Even through the thick blankets, the Yin Qi from Huo Yunjing’s body quickly began to seep in.

Gu Qingyin shivered and burrowed deeper under the covers. Thankfully, the Soul Mirror in her Dantian was constantly radiating heat, which more or less neutralized the cold.

Before long, Gu Qingyin drifted into a deep sleep. Huo Yunjing craned his neck to watch her. After a moment, he carefully leaned down and planted a kiss on her cheek. Then another...

After a while, he’d kissed her so much that Gu Qingyin’s brow furrowed in her sleep. Only then did Huo Yunjing, still not having had his fill, stop. He lay back down and closed his eyes, completely content.

’Of course, he didn’t need to sleep, but sleeping with his wife was very comfortable too.’

「The next morning.」 Gu Qingyin was woken by the cold. She turned her head and saw that Huo Yunjing, that damn rascal, had wormed his way under the covers at some point. No wonder she’d been dreaming she was chipping ice in Antarctica.

With a dark expression, Gu Qingyin smacked Huo Yunjing on the head. "Who told you you could get under the covers?"

She hadn’t hit him hard, so Huo Yunjing took it as a sign of affection. Far from being upset, he grew even clingier, pulling her in for a kiss he cheekily called a "good morning kiss."

When his icy lips pressed against hers, Gu Qingyin couldn’t help but squint. ’They’re really cold, but they feel nice... like chilled Jell-O, smooth and soft.’

The human and the ghost cuddled in bed for a while before finally getting up—mostly because Gu Qingyin had to call a halt to it. Otherwise, Huo Yunjing would never have let her go.

At eight o’clock sharp, Gu Qingyin, now fully dressed and ready, stepped out of the guest room.

When she passed Gugu’s room, she saw the door was open and the girl was gone. ’The little one is an early riser, as always.’

Gu Qingyin’s ears twitched as she leisurely made her way downstairs.

In the first-floor living room, Huo Xingjie and Xiao Qin were staring intently at Gugu, patiently coaching her. "Gugu, say it again. Da—ddy—!"

Gugu’s lips moved, but she remained silent.

"Gugu?" Xiao Qin asked, her face full of expectation. "Say ’Mama.’"

Although neither of them really cared much for the child, she was their daughter, after all. Now that they knew she could speak again, they wanted to hear it for themselves, the same way one might coax a pet to do a trick.

But it had been a long, long time since Gugu had received such enthusiastic attention from them. She felt flustered, just as she had last night. She had a feeling nothing good would come of this.

Just as Gugu was growing more and more flustered under their pressure, Gu Qingyin appeared from upstairs. Gugu’s eyes lit up. Taking advantage of her small size, she shot between the two adults with a WHOOSH and ran for it.

Gu Qingyin had just reached the bottom of the stairs when a small body crashed into her.

She bent down to pick Gugu up and asked with a wide smile, "Gugu, have you eaten yet?"

"I have!" Gugu answered in a clear, bright voice.

Her voice was different from the one the White Immortal had used. After all, when the creature had stolen her "voice," she was only three, and her voice had been much more childlike. After three years, Gugu’s voice had become much clearer and brighter, as melodious as a songbird.

Gu Qingyin nodded, satisfied. "Then let’s go. We’ll go home with Grandma first, and later I’ll take you to see Uncle Xinghai."

Gugu nodded excitedly. "Okay! Thank you, Grandma!" As if that wasn’t enough, she leaned in and planted a loud SMACK of a kiss on Gu Qingyin’s cheek.

The next second, Huo Yunjing appeared with a ZAP, glaring daggers at Gugu.

Gugu couldn’t see him, but she felt the air suddenly turn cold. She instinctively snuggled deeper into Gu Qingyin’s embrace, then blinked in confusion. ’Why does it feel even colder now?’

Gu Qingyin turned and glared at Huo Yunjing. "Call Mao Mao back. It’s time to go home."

Huo Yunjing tried to bargain. "Don’t you let her kiss you again. You’re mine."

Gu Qingyin rolled her eyes. "I know, I know. Now go."

Huo Yunjing huffed softly, but the corners of his lips curled up as he disappeared.

Gu Qingyin carried Gugu into the living room, completely ignoring the young couple as she began to lecture the child. "Gugu, you’re a big girl now, so you can’t go around kissing people, okay?"

"Why not?" Gugu pouted. "But I like you, Grandma."

"There are many ways to show you like someone. You can give them a hug, tell them with words, or prepare a surprise or a gift," Gu Qingyin explained patiently. "A girl has to protect herself. You can’t always be kissing people, and you can’t let other people kiss you, either. Understand?"

Gugu nodded, only half-understanding.

Gu Qingyin smiled and gently pinched her chubby, silky-smooth cheek. "Such a good girl, Gugu."

A moment later, Mao Mao came scampering down the stairs.

Hearing the noise, Gugu decisively abandoned Gu Qingyin to greet her little companion.

"Mao Mao!"

Mao Mao cried out in return and leaped from the stairs, landing right in Gugu’s arms and affectionately nuzzling her cheek.

Gu Qingyin shook her head at the sight. ’Mao Mao is acting just like a normal pet. There’s not a trace of the ferocity it showed when threatening the White Immortal last night. What an actor.’

"Huo Xingjie," Gu Qingyin called out.

Huo Xingjie immediately stood at attention. "Matriarch."

"Don’t be so nervous." Gu Qingyin smiled. "Do me a favor and give Old Madam Huo a message. Tell her if she wants to live out her golden years in peace, she should stop bothering me."

Huo Xingjie’s face went pale. He stammered, "Yes, I’ll be sure to pass it on."

Gu Qingyin stood up and beckoned to Gugu. "Gugu, let’s go home with Grandma."

"Okay!" Gugu, still holding Mao Mao, ran to Gu Qingyin’s side without giving her parents a single glance.

Human affection is a two-way street. Before, with no one to genuinely care for her, Gugu had naturally craved even the slightest hint of affection from her parents. But now that she had someone who truly adored her, she no longer cared for her parents’ flawed and flimsy love.

Holding Gu Qingyin’s hand, Gugu walked out of the villa. She looked up hopefully and asked, "Grandma, can I live with you always?"

Gu Qingyin nodded with a warm smile. "If that’s what you’d like, of course you can."

Gugu let out a cheer and threw herself into Gu Qingyin’s arms, her voice impossibly sweet. "Grandma, you’re the best! Gugu likes you the most!"

Gu Qingyin thought to herself, ’I might have missed the window for raising a son, but I can raise a daughter! Isn’t this so much better than some troublesome brat of a boy?’
